During the last decade, domestic violence has been identified as one of the major causes of emergency room visits by women. As many as 30% of the women who are seen by emergency room physicians exhibit at least one or more symptoms of physical abuse. The epidemiology, clinical features, microbiology and outcome of 30 episodes of nosocomial endocarditis occurring over a 13-year period were reviewed and compared with 148 cases of community-acquired endocarditis. In a study of 1320 adult patients admitted to a community hospital, there was a pressure ulcer incidence rate of 8.4%, with 3.2% of pressure ulcers present on admission. Of the 190 ulcers found, 63% (n = 120) were hospital acquired and were less severe than those present on admission. This paper reports the findings of a preliminary survey carried out in an Omani community to assess the prevalence of handicap amongst children, and its impact on the family. The sample comprised of 492 children less than 15 years of age. The disabilities identified related to chromosomal abnormality, genetic, perinatal, and infectious factors. In order to assess the health status of students doing their teaching diploma course at the Siriba Teachers College, Maseno, a study of their blood slides, their stools for ova and cysts and their urine samples for urinary tract infection was carried out. We analyze retrospectively all bacteremic episodes seen between January and December, 1987 in our institution. From a total number of blood cultures performed of 897, 145 were positive (16%), and 67 of them considered as contamination (7.5%). In a study of the safety, acceptability, and efficacy of ivermectin for community-based mass treatment of onchocerciasis, the drug was issued twice, one year apart, to the population of a rubber plantation (14,000 people) in Liberia, where over 80% of the adults have Onchocerca volvulus infection. In a two-month period, three cases of septicaemia and one of suppurative tenosynovitis caused by a single strain of Lancefield group A streptococcus, serotype T/M/R 3/3/3, occurred in the district of Nairn (population: 10,239).
