OBJECTIVE: To present two case reports that the authors believe demonstrate the creation of autoimmune hearing loss in a healthy ear in response to endolymphatic sac surgery in an opposite ear felt to be afflicted with Ménière's Disease. In both cases, unexpected trama was incurred in performing the original surgery for endolymphatic sac decompression.
STUDY DESIGN: Two case reports.
SETTING: Ambulatory office and hospital in a tertiary referral center.
PATIENTS: Two patients selected for their unique development of autoimmunity in the ear that was not operated on.
INTERVENTIONS: Surgical

A four years review from June 1998 to June 2002 of traumatic facial nerve paralysis from temporal bone fractures that required surgical intervention is presented. The aim of this clinical presentation was to determine the current pattern of cases with traumatic facial paralysis which required surgical intervention at our center. There were six cases, of which four (66%) were longitudinal fractures, one each (17%) had transverse fracture and fracture over the lateral wall of mastoid. Hearing loss (83%) was the commonest associated clinical symptom. All cases underwent decompression via the tran

A retrospective review of 36 patients with delayed-onset (19 patients) and immediate-onset (17 patients) traumatic facial paralysis was performed. We hypothesized that traumatic delayed-onset facial paralysis does not necessitate surgical decompression under any routine circumstances. Of 19 patients in this group, normal recovery (House grade 1) occurred in 94 percent of the patients without surgical intervention. The small percentage (6%) of these patients who failed to recover completely demonstrated mild degrees of weakness and synkinesis (House grade 2). Immediate-onset paralysis occurred

One hundred and ninety-one hands with suspected carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) were treated with surgical decompression of the median nerve. In a retrospective analysis 2.5-3 years later, an inquiry was carried out by questionnaire and the patients' records were examined to evaluate the final outcome. The questionnaire was answered by all 158 still living patients (ie, 175 hands), of whom 91 per cent reported numbness in the hand to have been completely relieved after surgery, while 23 per cent had had a recurrence of numbness, or other hand problems not clearly related to CTS, though just under

BACKGROUND: Surgical decompression is the intervention of choice for lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) when non-operative treatment has failed. Apart from acute complications such as hematoma and infections, same-level recurrent lumbar stenosis and adjacent-segment disease (ASD) are factors that can occur after index lumbar spine surgery.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this retrospective case series was to evaluate the outcome of surgery and the odds of necessary revisions.
METHODS: Patients who had undergone either decompressive lumbar laminotomy or laminotomy and spinal fusion due to lumbar spinal steno

In recent times, the surgical treatment of acute pancreatitis has significantly changed. Indication and the surgical techniques for emergency operations are basically similar to the previous practice but new indication area has appeared. Abdominal compartment syndrome is an immediate indication for surgery if conservative and semi-conservative therapy is failed or ineffective. In these cases, decompressive laparotomy and open abdomen treatment combined with vacuum therapy are currently recommended. Instead of conventional pancreatic necrosectomy, minimal invasive procedures became more often u

Cervical radiculopathy is characterized by compression of the roots of the nerve. When conservative treatment fails and symptoms persist or increase in severity, surgical treatment is considered. Anterior cervical discectomy with or without fusion is regarded as the standard treatment for cervical disk herniation. Recently, there is an evolving trend in spinal surgery towards less invasive techniques. Nucleoplasty is a minimally invasive technique in which radiofrequency technology is used for percutaneous decompression. During the last years nucleoplasty has been proven to be a safe and effec

The authors report their experience in 19 cases of primitive or secondary tumor of the hilus of the liver which couldn't benefit from radical operation. Palliative treatments--to resolve the jaundice (which is often the only responsible for a short-term exitus)--include surgical (intrahepatic bilio-digestive derivations) and non surgical procedures (PTDB, percutaneous transtumoral intubation). Considering the ephemeral results of the latter, the Authors take peripheral derivative operations into account and particularly the Soupault and Couinaud technique (intrahepatic colangiojejunostomy) per

INTRODUCTION: From 1 August 1983 to 6 June 1992, 284 patients underwent decompression of the trigeminal root in the rear part of the skull as treatment for tic douloureux. According to preoperative diagnosis and intraoperative inspection, a space-occupying process was the cause of the typical neuralgia in 13 cases (4 meningiomas, 3 epidermoid tumours, 3 acoustic neuromas and 2 trigeminal neuromas). In 271 cases (95.4%) microsurgical vascular decompression according to Jannetta was carried out.
METHODS: The majority of patients were between 45 and 75 years of age. The follow-up period ranged f

The computed tomography-assisted 3D navigation system is a useful tool for spinal surgeons, enabling them to enhance the effectiveness and safety of surgical procedures by providing real-time three-dimensional information during decompression, resection, and instrumentation. Specific advantages of this navigation system include precise pedicle screw placement, the capability for immediate intraoperative correction, and execution of minimally invasive surgeries with reduced radiation exposure for the surgical team. Noteworthy disadvantages of this system are the relatively high implementation c

The coexistence of intracranial multiple meningiomas and neurofibromatosis type 1 is a rare occurrence in the field of neurosurgery, presenting complex treatment challenges, unfavorable prognoses, and significant burdens on both families and society. Currently, the primary objective is to perform surgical total resection as far as possible, while considering postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy for cases where complete tumor resection is challenging. In this case, the patient has previously undergone multiple brain tumor resections and received radiation therapy. Currently, the tumor is exertin

A dentigerous cyst (DC) is a developmental odontogenic cyst that involves the crown or a portion of the crown of an unerupted or impacted tooth. Mandibular third molars are the most commonly implicated teeth in this type of cyst. DC can be asymptomatic and detected by an ordinary radiographic examination. Two massive DC with deeply impacted third molars were treated by marsupialization followed by surgical extraction and enucleation of the residual lining. In both cases, sensation on the lower lip and chin remained normal, and complete bone healing was achieved. Decompression by simple marsupi

Neurosarcoidosis involving the spine is uncommon. Sarcoidosis of the spine usually presents as an intramedullary lesion and rarely an epidural lesion. To have recurrence of neurosarcoidosis is an even rarer presentation. Here, we present a 37-year-old man with poorly controlled sarcoidosis who initially presented to our medical center in 2015 with thoracic myelopathy from epidural spinal sarcoidosis treated with thoracic decompression and fusion. He presented to the hospital 5 years later with a month history of progressive upper extremity weakness. MRI revealed recurrent stenosis and spinal c

INTRODUCTION: Osteoblastoma is a primary benign tumour which commonly presents in the younger population during the second decade of life. However, more aggressive osteoblastomas may present with features of aneurysmal bone cyst, and these can occur at uncommon locations.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 12-year-old child having an osteoblastoma on the left side of T11 with secondary aneurysmal bone cyst presenting with neurological deficits and myelopathic symptoms. Surgical debulking of the lesion with decompression laminectomy and posterior instrumentation of the spine was perfor

In the context of the interdisciplinary care of patients with chronic back pain, surgery is an option for those who do not benefit from conservative treatment. Psychological assessment prior to back surgery aims to identify suitable candidates for surgery and predict possible complications or poor treatment effects. The literature suggests that psychosocial factors are important outcome predictors of lumbar spinal surgery; however, there is not enough empirical evidence to show that early identification and treatment of these factors help improve surgical outcome. This review discusses the pos

A 20-month old girl with severe pulmonary hypertension and cardiomegaly was admitted to the paediatric intensive care unit with right ventricular failure of unknown origin. Only after decompression of the heart chambers under extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), did the pathognomonic membrane of Cor triatriatum become visible on echocardiography. The patient underwent successful surgical correction and subsequently cardiac function recovered completely. Cor triatriatum remains a rare congenital cardiac disorder with a variable presentation, often including recurrent respiratory infectio

While paint-balling a 15-year-old boy was shot on the front of his face guard causing him to hyperextend his neck. Over the next few days he developed neck stiffness and a large painful swelling over his upper left sternocleidomastoid muscle. CT confirmed this to be a haematoma abscess and at operation it was found to originate from the parapharyngeal vessels, extending from the skull base and tracking inferiorly along the carotid sheath, compressing (and partially thrombosing) the internal jugular vein (IJV). After surgical decompression, double-dose low molecular weight heparin and antibioti
