Instruments and scales for the evaluation of acute radiation dermatitis: A systematic review.

Various assessment instruments have been proposed to document and evaluate radiation dermatitis. In this systematic review, we identified nineteen instruments or scales for the evaluation of radiation dermatitis and performed a critical review of the signs and symptoms included in each of them. Of those scales, only two have been validated. There is a need to revise the currently used instruments so to improve their capability to measure all relevant aspects of radiation dermatitis and their severity. In addition, it would be important to add the patients' view of their conditions and how they…

An Experimental Model of Proton-Beam-Induced Radiation Dermatitis In Vivo.

Radiation dermatitis (RD) is one of the most common side effects of radiation therapy. However, to date, there is a lack of both specific treatments for RD and validated experimental animal models with the use of various sources of ionizing radiation (IR) applied in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a model of acute RD induced using proton radiation in mice. Acute RD (Grade 2-4) was obtained with doses of 30, 40, and 50 Gy, either with or without depilation. The developed model of RD was characterized by typical histological changes in the skin after irradiat…

Lanolin: The 2023 American Contact Dermatitis Society Allergen of the Year.

In 2023, lanolin was named the American Contact Dermatitis Society Allergen of the Year. Despite its widespread use in personal care products and industrial goods, lanolin is thought to be a rare sensitizer in patients with healthy skin; however, those with chronic inflammatory skin conditions are at a higher risk for allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) to lanolin. The proper patch test formulation for lanolin is a source of contention. In this article, we discuss ACD to lanolin with a focus on its paradoxical nature and the subtleties to consider when patch testing to this controversial allerge…

A case of reactive granulomatous dermatitis associated with neonatal lupus erythematosus.

Neonatal lupus erythematosus (NLE) is an uncommon disorder affecting approximately one out of 20 000 live births in the United States. Common manifestations of NLE include cutaneous eruptions and cardiac involvement. The typical rash of NLE most closely resembles the rash of subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus both clinically and histopathologically. We present a case of reactive granulomatous dermatitis (RGD) associated with NLE in a 3-month-old male in whom the initial histopathology and immunohistochemistry were concerning for hematologic malignancy. RGD is a unifying term used to descri…

Diaper dermatitis-a narrative review of clinical presentation, subtypes, and treatment.

Diaper dermatitis (DD) is an umbrella term with different clinical presentations, pathophysiology, treatments, and outcomes. The major subtypes include irritant contact dermatitis and candida-associated DD. In case of atypical presentation or unresponsiveness to treatment, other differential diagnoses should be considered. Although DD can occur at any age, it peaks in newborns and infants < 2 years of age. We will focus on this age group in our narrative review.

Stasis Dermatitis: An Overview of Its Clinical Presentation, Pathogenesis, and Management.

Stasis dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease of the lower extremities. It typically occurs in older individuals and is the cutaneous manifestation of venous hypertension caused by venous reflux. Such retrograde venous blood flow is the result of incompetent venous valves, valve destruction, or venous obstruction. Stasis dermatitis is eczematous. The associated impairment of venous valves may cause swelling of the legs, leading to serious conditions including venous ulcerations. Diagnosis can be challenging because of its clinical resemblance to other skin conditions and poor clinic…

Allergic Contact Dermatitis Associated With Religious Practices: Review of the Literature.

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) may occur secondary to devotional practices in various religions. A systematic review of PubMed was conducted from inception of database to September 9, 2022. Key terms were "contact dermatitis" or "devotional dermatosis" in association with major world religions including "Christianity," "Islam," "Hinduism," "Buddhism," "Sikhism," and "Judaism." Inclusion criteria were determined by presence of a religious practice and associated ACD. Articles referencing other cutaneous reactions such as chemical leukoderma were excluded. In total, 36 of 102 unique articles …

Expert consensus on the systemic treatment of atopic dermatitis in special populations.

With the increasing number of options for the treatment of moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis, clinicians need guidance on a practical approach to selecting a systemic agent for specific patient populations. We convened an expert panel consisting of 12 members to conduct a literature review and summarize relevant data related to six scenarios of clinical interest: comorbid asthma, ocular surface disease, history of cancer, past and ongoing infections of interest (including herpes simplex virus, herpes zoster, hepatitis B, and tuberculosis), pregnancy and lactation, and the elderly. We perfor…

Impact of digital dermatitis on locomotion and gait traits of beef cattle.

Digital dermatitis (DD) is an infectious skin disease and a major cause of lameness that significantly impacts cattle productivity and welfare. However, DD does not always result in lameness and lameness scoring systems are not specific to hoof pathologies. Digital dermatitis detection protocols could be improved by including gait traits most related to DD. The aims of this study were to 1) determine the association between DD M-stage ("M" for Mortellaro), locomotion, and gait traits: arched back (AB), asymmetric gait (AG), head bobbing (HB), tracking up (TU), and reluctance to bear weight (WB…

Association of atopic dermatitis with delinquent behaviors in US children and adolescents.

Childhood atopic dermatitis (AD) is associated with chronic itch, pain and sleep disturbance, which may predispose children to high-risk behaviors in their school and home environments. We examined the association between AD and delinquent/high-risk behaviors in children and adolescents. Data were analyzed from The Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a longitudinal birth cohort study consisting of 4898 children born in urban cities between 1998 and 2000. A 1-year history of AD was associated with ≥ 75th percentile of mean delinquent behavior scores at age 9 (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) […
