[Iodine deficiency, iodine requirement and iodine excess of farm animals--experiments on growing pigs].

Since insufficient iodine intake is widespread among the German population, farm animals should if possible receive iodine above requirement, thus concentrating the trace element in milk, eggs and possibly meat. Experiments with a total of 29 fattening pigs with grain soy-bean meal diets without iodine supplementation or with increasing supplements up to 1000 micrograms iodine/kg diet did not show any effect on growth intensity (gain) and feed efficiency. At and above 125 micrograms supplementary iodine/kg diet the thyroid was not or only little hypertrophied and iodine incorporation into thyr

A review of the importance of cryptosporidiosis in farm animals.

Cryptosporidium species are coccidian parasites with a large capacity to reproduce and to disseminate. Several species are known to infect farm animals, although the economic importance of cryptosporidiosis is highly host species dependent. This paper reviews the impact of cryptosporidial infections in livestock and poultry. For different farm animals, the Cryptosporidium spp. that occur, as well as their clinical and pathological features, and their interactions with other pathogens, are described. In addition, data concerning the prevalence, the transmission and the epidemiology of the disea

[Distribution, serovar affiliation and epidemiologic behavior of Cryptococcus neoformans isolates from ornamental bird breeds].

Investigations of faeces samples from breeding stocks of companion birds in the federal state of Thuringia revealed a high contamination rate of companion birds with Cryptococcus (Cr.) neoformans var. neoformans. The prevalence of Cr. neoformans var. neoformans correlated with the spectrum of bird species present in the respective breeding units. The causes for that are not clear at the moment. Sensitivity of Cr. neoformans var. neoformans towards alkaline agents was not confirmed and was ruled out as a reason for different tenacity of the yeast in various bird breedings. Differentiation of va

[Problems in the energy and nutritional requirements of feeding and welfare of food producing animals].

The efforts in optimizing feeding conditions of food producing animals in the past were focussed primarily on promoting performance and/or the products' quality (MEYER 1997). In spite of great success in this direction various risks occur due to the conflict between the increased requirements on the one hand and the species typical demands on the other (for example: need of roughage as well as of concentrates with high energy and nutrient density in ruminants). Especially in feeding high yielding dairy cows the conflict is obvious: Even in the case, that high amounts of concentrates are fed it

[Lice and methods of control].

The morphology and biology of sucking lice (Anoplura) and biting lice (Mallophaga) are described. A table shows the main species for given hosts and provides simplified keys for identification. Lice have a direct pathogenic effect (damage to skin and cutaneous appendages, fall in productivity) and an indirect effect (transmission of Rickettsia prowazeki, R. quintana and Borrelia recurrentis in human beings; African and classical swine fever virus, equine infectious anaemia virus and Dipylidium caninum in animals). Control methods, current active insecticides (and those being tested) and approp

[Occurrence of Listeria monocytogenes in snakes, tortoises, lizards and amphibians raised as pets].

Listeria (L.) spp. were isolated from fecal samples of 9 (30.0%) from 30 tortoises, of 4 (12.1%) from 33 lizards, of 3 (60.0%) from 5 amphibia and of 1 (1.3%) of 76 snakes. All animals were kept as pets. 8 isolates were identified as L. monocytogenes, whereas 4 strains were serovar 4ab (3 tortoises and 1 amphibia), 3 strains serovar 4b (2 tortoises and 1 snake) and 1 strain serovar 4e (1 amphibia). Further 4 isolates were identified as L. ivanovii serovar 5 (3 lizards and 1 tortoise), 3 strains as L. innocua serovar 6b (3 tortoises) and 2 strains as L. welshimeri serovar 6a (1 lizard) respecti

[The occurrence of Cryptococcus neoformans in fecal samples from birds kept in human living areas].

With help of Guizotia creatinine agar (syn. bird seed agar) Cryptococcus (Cr.) neoformans var. neoformans was isolated from 71 (7.7%) of 925 investigated droppings of birds kept within human living area. Cr. neoformans was detected in droppings of 1.2% from 164 psittacines, in droppings of 1.7% from 118 budgerigars and in droppings of 18.4% from (carrier) pigeons. This yeast was not isolated from droppings of 13 small parrots, 10 eclectus parrots, 13 rosellas, 21 cockatiels, 6 Polytelidus sp., 32 Cacatua sp., 13 Carduelis sp., 5 waxbills, 5 starlings, 120 chicken, 9 turkeys, 2 geese, 2 Turdus

Enteric infections associated with exposure to animals or animal products.

The epidemiology and clinical presentation of enteric infections are discussed in this article. These include bacterial, viral, and parasitic illnesses, and are associated with the increasing popularity of drinking unpasteurized milk; eating raw fish and shellfish; consuming undercooked pork, poultry, and eggs; and having contact with pets. Salmonella, Campylobacter jejuni, Vibrio, Yersinia, Aeromonas, Edwardsiella, hepatitis A virus, Norwalk virus, Anisakis, Eustrongylides, Diphyllobothrium, Nanophyetus, Isospora, and Cryptosporidium are included. The importance of preventing these increasing

Drought increases forage nitrate and cyanide.

To investigate drought-associated increases in concentrations of nitrate and cyanide in animal forage, we compared forage nitrate and cyanide in 1986-87 (annual rainfall 33 in) to nitrate and cyanide in a drought (1988 and 1989; annual rainfall 20 and 27 in, respectively). Fifteen to 20% of the nitrate and cyanide samples from 1986-1987 had sufficiently high concentrations to be of concern (3000 ppm nitrate, 20 ppm cyanide as submitted). Only 4-6% of the 1986-1987 samples had concentrations sufficiently high to produce acute respiratory distress (13,000 ppm nitrate, 50 ppm cyanide as submitted

A survey of leptospirological studies carried out on the Cape Verde Islands.

The authors subjected 611 human sera, 1295 sera of domestic and 211 sera of wild living animals from two islands of the Cape Verde archipelago to serological tests for leptospirosis. Among the human sera 7.2% reacted positively. Antibodies to L. bratislava of the serogroup Australis were most frequent (59.1% of all positive sera). Antibodies to L. icterohaemorrhagiae were found in 1.3% of the sera tested, to L. sejroe in 1.1%, to L. canicola in 0.7%, to L. pyrogenes in 0.3% and to L. pomona, L. bulgarica and L. grippotyphosa in 0.2% each. The existence of natural foci of leptospiroses could no
