Validation of an ear tag-based accelerometer system for detecting grazing behavior of dairy cows.

The objective of the study was to develop a grazing algorithm for an ear tag-based accelerometer system (Smartbow GmbH, Weibern, Austria) and to validate the grazing algorithm with data from a noseband sensor. The ear tag has an acceleration sensor, a radio chip, and temperature sensor for calibration and it can monitor rumination and detect estrus and localization. To validate the ear tag, a noseband sensor (RumiWatch, Itin and Hoch GmbH, Liestal, Switzerland) was used. The noseband sensor detects pressure and acceleration patterns, and, with a software program specific to the noseband, press…

Perinatal atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor involving the deep ear structures and complicated by arterial infarction.

Atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor is a malignant pediatric brain tumor. Unusual invasive behavior of the dura and bony involvement of the deep ear structures and rapid progression in size complicated by arterial infarction have not been described before. A newborn girl presented with increased intracranial pressure. Medical imaging revealed a large mass centered in the left cerebellopontine angle and left middle cranial fossa with large supra-tentorial components associated with destruction of the left petrous bone with involvement of the inner and middle ear structures. Shortly, the tumor rapi…

Analysis of Inflammatory Signaling in Human Middle Ear Cell Culture Models of Pediatric Otitis Media.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Cell culture models are valuable tools for investigation of the molecular pathogenesis of diseases including otitis media (OM). Previous study indicates that age-, sex-, and race-associated differences in molecular signaling may impact disease pathophysiology. Currently, a singular immortalized middle ear epithelial (MEE) cell line exists, HMEEC-1, derived from an adult without known middle ear disease. In this study, HMEEC-1 and primary MEE cultures from pediatric patients with and without OM were stimulated with inflammatory cytokines or OM-pathogenic bacterial lysates…

Is One Ear Good Enough? Unilateral Hearing Loss and Preschoolers' Comprehension of the English Plural.

Purpose The plural is one of the first grammatical morphemes acquired by English-speaking children with normal hearing (NH). Yet, those with hearing loss show delays in both plural comprehension and production. However, little is known about the effects of unilateral hearing loss (UHL) on children's acquisition of the plural, where children's ability to perceive fricatives (e.g., the /s/ in cats ) can be compromised. This study therefore tested whether children with UHL were able to identify the grammatical number of newly heard words, both singular and plural. Method Eleven 3- to 5-year-olds …

Middle Ear Muscle Reflex and Word Recognition in "Normal-Hearing" Adults: Evidence for Cochlear Synaptopathy?

OBJECTIVES: Permanent threshold elevation after noise exposure, ototoxic drugs, or aging is caused by loss of sensory cells; however, animal studies show that hair cell loss is often preceded by degeneration of synapses between sensory cells and auditory nerve fibers. The silencing of these neurons, especially those with high thresholds and low spontaneous rates, degrades auditory processing and may contribute to difficulties in understanding speech in noise. Although cochlear synaptopathy can be diagnosed in animals by measuring suprathreshold auditory brainstem responses, its diagnosis in hu…

Middle-ear barotrauma after hyperbaric oxygen therapy: a five-year retrospective analysis on 2,610 patients.

INTRODUCTION: Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) therapy is the use of oxygen or gas mixtures at a pressure above atmospheric pressure for therapeutic purposes. This treatment is used in numerous pathological processes. Its main side effect is middle ear barotrauma (MEB), which represents a great concern for iatrogenic HBO2 therapy. The aim of this work is to describe this adverse event in order to highlight clinical elements that can contribute to its prevention and management. METHODS: We conducted a five-year retrospective study from January 2013 to December 2017, where 2,610 patients were selected,…

A New Cartilage-Sparing Procedure for Correction of the Prominent Ear Deformity: Dermal Anchor Technique.

BACKGROUND: Although the literature is replete with surgical techniques described for correction of the prominent ears, new techniques are still needed to minimize the recurrence rates and postoperative complications. OBJECTIVE: Here, the author presents a new and simple otoplasty procedure, namely, the dermal anchor technique (DAT), in which a wide planar adhesion between the opposing dermal surfaces of the deepithelized antihelical groove is used as a biological anchor for long-term maintenance of the antihelical fold without any cartilage manipulation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For 12 years,…

Middle-retroauricular Island Flap: A New Axial Flap for Reconstruction of Non-helical Ear Defects.

UNLABELLED: Surgical treatment of ear carcinomas needs the selection of the appropriate reconstructive techniques, which depends on the location and the dimensions of the defect after excision of the cancer and the quality of blood supply to the peri-lesional skin. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and reliability of a new axial island retroauricular flap (middle-retroauricular island flap M-RIF) for coverage of non-helical ear defects with direct donor site closure. METHODS: All patients, from January 2013 to January 2020, with skin tumors of the non-helix region and undergo…

Application of Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy and Inner Ear Regeneration for Hearing Loss: A Review.

Inner and middle ear disorders are the leading cause of hearing loss, and are said to be among the greatest risk factors of dementia. The use of regenerative medicine for the treatment of inner ear disorders may offer a potential alternative to cochlear implants for hearing recovery. In this paper, we reviewed recent research and clinical applications in middle and inner ear regeneration and cell therapy. Recently, the mechanism of inner ear regeneration has gradually been elucidated. "Inner ear stem cells," which may be considered the precursors of various cells in the inner ear, have been di…

Retinoic acid synthesis and autoregulation mediate zonal patterning of vestibular organs and inner ear morphogenesis.

Retinoic acid (RA), a vitamin A (retinol) derivative, has pleiotropic functions during embryonic development. The synthesis of RA requires t … ow that RDH10 is important for both sensory and non-sensory formation of the vestibule of the inner ear. Mice deficient in Rdh10 exhibit failure of utricle-saccule separation, otoconial formation and zonal patterning of vestibular sensory organs. These phenotypes are similar to those of Aldh1a3 knockouts, and the sensory phenotype is complementary to …

Efficient viral transduction in mouse inner ear hair cells with utricle injection and AAV9-PHP.B.

Viral delivery of exogenous coding sequences into the inner ear has the potential for therapeutic benefit for patients suffering genetic or acquired hearing loss. To devise improved strategies for viral delivery, we investigated two injection techniques, round window membrane injection or a novel utricle injection method, for their ability to safely and efficiently transduce sensory hair cells and neurons of the mouse inner ear. In addition, we evaluated three synthetic AAV vectors (Anc80L65, AAV9-PHP.B, AAV2.7m8) encoding enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP) and three promoters (Cmv, Syn…
