Effective Connectivity Reveals an Interconnected Inferotemporal Network for Three-Dimensional Structure Processing.

Disparity-defined 3D shape is processed in both the ventral and the dorsal visual stream. The network of cortical areas that is activated during the processing of disparity-defined 3D shape includes, in addition to parietal and premotor areas, three clearly distinct regions in inferotemporal cortex (ITC). To investigate the connectivity of the latter regions, we combined electrical stimulation with fMRI in male macaque monkeys. Electrical stimulation of each of the 3D-structure nodes in ITC mainly elicited increased fMRI activations in the other 3D-structure nodes and more variably in other pa

Sound-induced vertigo after cochlear implantation.

AIM: Postoperative vertigo is a well-known complication after cochlear implantation. The aim of the study was to investigate whether the electrical stimulation of the auditory structures via cochlear implant electrodes can affect the vestibular system and induce vertigo. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the first group, 114 patients were surveyed retrospectively via questionnaires to evaluate the occurrence and frequency of sound-induced vertigo after cochlear implantation. In the second group of 26 patients, the effects of electrical stimulation on the vestibular system were studied prospectively.

Tachykinin NK1 and NK2 receptor antagonists and atropine-resistant ascending excitatory reflex to the circular muscle of the guinea-pig ileum.

1. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of various antagonists, selective for the tachykinin NK1 or NK2 receptor, on the atropine-resistant ascending excitatory reflex (AER) to the circular muscle of the guinea-pig ileum elicited by radial stretch (balloon distension) or electrical field stimulation. 2. Submaximal and maximal atropine- (1 microM) resistant AER elicited by balloon distension averaged about 40-50% and 70-90% of maximal circular spasm to 80 mM KCl, respectively. The NK1 receptor antagonist, (+/)-CP 96,345 (1 microM) inhibited both maximal and submaximal AER. FK 888

[Electromyographic and manometric studies of the antrum and duodenal motility in rabbits under the influence of pentagastrin in a mechanical duodenal passage disorder].

The influence of a mechanical disturbance of the duodenum on the motility of the antrum and duodenum was investigated by means of the electromyography and the perfusion manometry. Thereby the effect of the pentagastrin stimulating the motility of the unstriated muscles of the gastro-intestinal tract was used for testing the function reserve of the antrum- and duodenal-muscles. After one and a half month of establishing the passage obstacle there occurs a complex disturbance of the electrical activity; the unstriated muscles does not react on a stimulating excitation.

Direct-current stimulation of non-union and congenital pseudarthrosis. Exploration of its clinical application.

Based on the response of bone to electrical current in previous studies, an exploratory clinical study of the effect of electrical current on non-union and congenital pseudarthrosis was performed. Constant direct current of ten to twenty microamperes was applied to twenty-four non-unions and five congenital pseudarthroses. Complete union occurred in fifteen non-unions and in one congenital pseudarthrosis. A single cathode delivering ten microamperes seemed sufficient to heal non-union in small bones, but multiple cathodes each delivering twenty microamperes appeared to be required to heal non-

[Prolonging the life of an implanted pacemaker by reducing impulse duration (author's transl)].

The current drain of a pacemaker depends on the electrical charge delivered to the heart during stimulation, the energy being determined by amplitude and width of the stimulating pulse. On investigating how far pulse duration can be shortened without jeopardizing reliability of cardiac stimulation, how much the current drain can be reduced and how this might influence pacemaker life, it was found that pulse width could be reduced to 0.3 ms in over 80% of cases with an increase in pacemaker life, if powered by conventional mercury batteries, to about 60 months.

A self-powered implantable and bioresorbable electrostimulation device for biofeedback bone fracture healing.

Electrostimulation has been recognized as a promising nonpharmacological treatment in orthopedics to promote bone fracture healing. However, clinical applications have been largely limited by the complexity of equipment operation and stimulation implementation. Here, we present a self-powered implantable and bioresorbable bone fracture electrostimulation device, which consists of a triboelectric nanogenerator for electricity generation and a pair of dressing electrodes for applying electrostimulations directly toward the fracture. The device can be attached to irregular tissue surfaces and pro

Cortical neuroplastic changes to painful colon stimulation in patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

The aim of this study was to model the cerebral generators following painful electrical stimulation of the sigmoid colon in 10 healthy controls and 10 patients with visceral pain due to the irritable bowel syndrome. The evoked brain potentials to 30 painful electrical stimuli from the sigmoid colon were recorded from 31 surface electrodes and subjected to electrical dipole source modelling. Two dipoles in the bilateral insular cortex, one dipole in the anterior cingulate gyrus and two dipoles in the bilateral second somatosensory area were found. The anterior cingulate dipole showed a more pos

Flexible, Transparent, and Cytocompatible Nanostructured Indium Tin Oxide Thin Films for Bio-optoelectronic Applications.

Electrical stimulation has been used successfully for several decades for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders, including motor disorders, pain, and psychiatric disorders. These technologies typically rely on the modulation of neural activity through the focused delivery of electrical pulses. Recent research, however, has shown that electrically triggered neuromodulation can be further enhanced when coupled with optical stimulation, an approach that can benefit from the development of novel electrode materials that combine transparency with excellent electrochemical and biological perf

A novel bone-thinning technique for transcranial stimulation motor-evoked potentials in rats.

Transcranial electrical stimulated motor-evoked potentials (tcMEPs) are widely used to evaluate motor function in humans, and even in animal studies, tcMEPs are used to evaluate neurological dysfunction. However, there is a dearth of reports on extended tcMEP recordings in both animal models and humans. Therefore, this study examined a new technique for stably recording tcMEPs over several weeks in six healthy female Sprague-Dawley rats. We thinned the skull bone using the skull base and spinal surgery technique to reduce electrical resistance for electrical stimulation. tcMEPs were recorded o

The relationship between thiamine deficiency and performance of a learning task in rats.

We have been investigating the relationship between learning and thiamine. Electrical stimulation of mesencephalic periaqueductal gray matter (PAG) is known to have an aversive effect and elicits spontaneous instrumental escape behavior. We taught rats to press a lever to escape from the pain of electrical stimulation by learning to turn a switch off. Then we examined the relationship between learning and the thiamine concentration in various portions of the brain. (1) One group of rats was given a normal diet and another group was given a thiamine-deficient diet which contained half of the am

A Cochlear Implant Performance Prognostic Test Based on Electrical Field Interactions Evaluated by eABR (Electrical Auditory Brainstem Responses).

BACKGROUND: Cochlear implants (CIs) are neural prostheses that have been used routinely in the clinic over the past 25 years. They allow children who were born profoundly deaf, as well as adults affected by hearing loss for whom conventional hearing aids are insufficient, to attain a functional level of hearing. The "modern" CI (i.e., a multi-electrode implant using sequential coding strategies) has yielded good speech comprehension outcomes (recognition level for monosyllabic words about 50% to 60%, and sentence comprehension close to 90%). These good average results however hide a very impor

Cocaine's effects on the reactivity of the medial prefrontal cortex to ventral tegmental area stimulation: optical imaging study in mice.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is modulated by dopaminergic and glutamatergic neurons that project from the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and disruption of this modulation might facilitate impulsive behaviors during cocaine intoxication. Here, we assessed the effects of acute cocaine (30 mg/kg, i.p.) on the reactivity of the PFC to VTA stimulation. METHODS: Using a genetically encoded calcium indicator (GCaMP6f), we optically imaged the neuronal Ca2+ reactance in medial PFC (mPFC) in response to 'tonic-like' (5 Hz) and 'phasic-like' (50 Hz) electrical VTA stimulation. The hig

Bioengineered in vitro skeletal muscles as new tools for muscular dystrophies preclinical studies.

Muscular dystrophies are a group of highly disabling disorders that share degenerative muscle weakness and wasting as common symptoms. To date, there is not an effective cure for these diseases. In the last years, bioengineered tissues have emerged as powerful tools for preclinical studies. In this review, we summarize the recent technological advances in skeletal muscle tissue engineering. We identify several ground-breaking techniques to fabricate in vitro bioartificial muscles. Accumulating evidence shows that scaffold-based tissue engineering provides topographical cues that enhance the vi

Sensory modulation of fasciculation discharge frequency.

INTRODUCTION: Fasciculations are a marker for the diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and reflect increased lower motor neuron (LMN) excitability. METHODS: We investigated modulation of fasciculation frequency in the first dorsal interosseous (FDI) muscle of the right hand following peripheral sensory nerve electrical stimulation, and vibration over the muscle-tendon region (50 and 100 Hz), in patients with ALS, spinal muscular atrophy, and benign fasciculation syndrome. FDI muscles of ALS patients were classified by the presence or absence of neurogenic changes on needle electro

Mechanomyographic response during FES in healthy and paraplegic subjects.

Mechanomyography (MMG) registers lateral oscillations of contracting muscles. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) improves the rehabilitation of paraplegic subjects and can be used in neuroprosthesis control. During FES application, muscular contraction responses may vary, possibly due to fatigue or adaptation of nerve cells face to electrical stimuli. This study measured the differences in MMG RMS and median frequency (MF) features between healthy (HV) and spinal cord injury (SCI) volunteers. Ten HV and three SCI participated in the research. FES waveform consisted of a monophasic square
