BACKGROUND: This scoping review aims to synthesize existing evidence on non-pharmacological interventions for managing food selectivity in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Specifically, it explores sensory, behavioral, and environmental factors influencing intervention outcomes and examines the role of occupational therapists (OTs) within multidisciplinary teams.
METHODS: A search was conducted across MEDLINE, EBSCO, Web of Science, OTseeker, and SCOPUS from August 2023 to October 2023. Only experimental studies published in English were included, focusing on behavioral treatm

Food is not only a source of nutrition but can also contain toxic substances. To survive, animals first need to avoid the ingestion of such harmful food, and if ingestion occurs, activate detoxification. However, the molecular coordination of these two functions has remained unclear. Using Drosophila melanogaster, we show that the major insect steroid hormone ecdysteroid and dopamine/ecdysteroid receptor (DopEcR) signaling play pivotal roles in both behavioral avoidance and detoxification of foods containing lethal levels of copper. Cell-type-specific knockdown experiments revealed that DopEcR

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by the absence of paternally expressed imprinted genes on chromosome 15q11-13. Individuals with PWS typically experience feeding difficulties and a lack of appetite in infancy, followed by weight gain, uncontrolled appetite, and a lack of satiety. Hyperphagia in PWS is exacerbated by impaired satiety, low energy expenditure, and intellectual difficulties, including obsessive-compulsive disorder and/or autistic behaviors. Without rigorous external management of their eating behaviors, patients with PWS become severely obese and

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a genetic disorder characterized by hypotonia and poor feeding in infancy which progresses to hyperphagia in early-mid childhood, as well as developmental delays, a spectrum of behavioral and psychiatric concerns, endocrinopathies, orthopedic issues, and less commonly, seizures, sleep apnea, and narcolepsy with or without cataplexy. This study used data in the Global PWS Registry (N = 893) to explore the onset and severity over time of the neuropsychiatric features reported in individuals with PWS and explored its associations with sleep disorders, seizures, and

Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder that affects approximately 1 in 20,000 individuals worldwide. Symptom progression in PWS is classically characterized by two nutritional stages. Stage 1 is hypotonia characterized by poor muscle tone that leads to poor feeding behavior causing failure to thrive in early neonatal life. Stage 2 is followed by the development of extreme hyperphagia, also known as insatiable eating and fixation on food that often leads to obesity in early childhood. Other major features of PWS include obsessive-compulsive and hoarding behaviors, int…

Heat stress is a global issue for the poultry industries with substantial annual economic losses and threats to bird health and welfare. When chickens are exposed to high ambient temperatures, like other species they undergo multiple physiological alterations, including behavioral changes, such as cessation of feeding, initiation of a stress signaling cascade, and intestinal immune, and inflammatory responses. The brain and gut are connected and participate in bidirectional communication via the nervous and humoral systems, this network collectively known as the gut-brain axis. Moreover, heat

Trypanosoma rangeli (T. rangeli), a parasite, is not pathogenic to human but pathogenic to some vector species to induce the behavior changes of infected vectors and subsequently impact the transmission dynamics of other diseases such as Chagas disease which shares the same vector species. Here we develop a mathematical model and conduct qualitative analysis for the transmission dynamics of T. rangeli. We incorporate both systemic and co-feeding transmission routes, and account for the pathogenic effect using infection-induced fecundity and fertility change of the triatomine bugs. We derive tw

Most chronic stress protocols are too laborious or do not abide by the two main characteristics of the stress concept: uncontrollability and unpredictability. The goal of this study was to establish a simple and reliable model of chronic stress, while maintaining the main features of the concept. Animals were exposed to chronic movement restraint with variable duration (2, 4 or 6 h, in an unpredictable schedule) for 3 weeks and assessed in several physiological and behavioral readouts known to reflect chronic stress states. Body weight, levels of plasma corticosterone, hippocampal pro-and anti

Countries in the Asia Pacific region aim to eliminate malaria by 2030. A cornerstone of malaria elimination is the effective management of Anopheles mosquito vectors. Current control tools such as insecticide treated nets or indoor residual sprays target mosquitoes in human dwellings. We find in a high transmission region in India, malaria vector populations show a high propensity to feed on livestock (cattle) and rest in outdoor structures such as cattle shelters. We also find evidence for a shift in vector species complex towards increased zoophilic behavior in recent years. Using a malaria

The many published studies of experimental chronic renal failure (CRF) include a few findings which are similar to those reported in children with the naturally occurring disease. Experimental CRF has proved a useful model for investigating changes in eating behaviors: lack of appetite for sweet foods and selection of foods with high protein contents was comparable to behaviors exhibited by children. Optimal protein intake was found to be close to the minimum recommended intake for "optimal" growth (different from maximum growth in rats). Excessive protein intake had detrimental effects on ren

Numerous reports dealing with the gross morphological, microanatomical, and behavioral changes occurring with prenatal alcohol exposure in rats have appeared. In order to define the cerebral metabolic correlates of prenatal alcohol exposure, in vivo glucose utilization rates in brain were assayed using an autoradiographic [14C]deoxyglucose technique. Pregnant Long-Evans rats were fed liquid diets containing either 35% or 0% ethanol-derived calories during day 6 through day 20 of gestation. These liquid diets were isocaloric and a pair-feeding procedure was employed. The offspring were tested o

Parallels between the behavioral profiles of rats exposed to alcohol prenatally and those with hippocampal damage suggest that hippocampal dysfunction may underlie some of the behavioral abnormalities resulting from prenatal alcohol exposure. Because of possible hippocampal involvement in the acquisition of a delayed conditioned taste aversion, this task was assessed in rat pups exposed to alcohol prenatally. Long-Evans rats were maintained on liquid diets containing either 35% or 0% ethanol derived calories from Days 6-20 of gestation. Pair-feeding procedures and an ad lib Lab Chow (LC) group

During the postnatal period the developing brain is vulnerable to insults including nutrient insufficiency and infection that may lead to disrupted development and cognitive dysfunction. Since iron deficiency (ID) often presents with immunodeficiency, the objective of this study was to investigate peripheral viremia and inflammation as well as brain microglial phenotype and function when ID and respiratory infection occur simultaneously in a neonatal piglet model. On postnatal day 2 (PD 2) male and female piglets were assigned to one of four treatments and fed either control or ID milk replace

The long-lasting vulnerability to relapse remains the main challenge for the successful treatment of drug addiction. Neural systems that are involved in processing natural rewards and drugs of abuse overlap. However, neuroplasticity that is caused by drug exposure may be responsible for maladaptive, compulsive, and addictive behavior. The orexin (Orx) system participates in regulating numerous physiological processes, including energy metabolism, arousal, and feeding, and is recruited by drugs of abuse. The Orx system is differentially recruited by drugs and natural rewards. Specifically, we f

At least twenty-two architectonic areas can be distinguished within the orbital and medial prefrontal cortex (OMPFC). Although each of these areas has a distinct structure and connections, they can be grouped into two "networks," defined by cortico-cortical connections that primarily interconnect areas within each network. The networks also have different connections to the striatum, medial thalamus, and other brain regions. The orbital network consists of most of the areas in the orbital cortex. It receives several sensory inputs (olfactory, gustatory, visceral afferent, somatic sensory, and

Fabricating the Gemini infrared multi-object spectrograph (GIRMOS) image slicer requires ultra-precision diamond machining (UPDM) to achieve nanometric surface quality for astronomical observations. Existing surface topography models lack realism and general modelling in predicting surface generation for complex geometries. This study develops an improved surface topography model for RSA 6061 aluminum image slicers by incorporating refined tool edge profiles, material defects, and post-machining behavior alongside vibration, feed, and tool geometry parameters. Experimental validation of three-

In most species, endogenous circadian clocks regulate 24-h rhythms of behavior and physiology. Clock disruption has been associated with decreased cognitive performance and increased propensity to develop obesity, diabetes, and cancer. Many hormonal factors show robust diurnal secretion rhythms, some of which are involved in mediating clock output from the brain to peripheral tissues. In this review, we describe the mechanisms of clock-hormone interaction in mammals, the contribution of different tissue oscillators to hormonal regulation, and how changes in circadian timing impinge on endocrin

Selective lesions of the ascending dopamine pathways were made by bilateral injection of the neurotoxin 6-OHDA (8 micrograms/4 microliters). Catecholamine fluorescence histochemistry revealed a marked degeneration of the ascending mesostriatal and mesolimbic dopamine systems, while the hypothalamic dopamine and noradrenaline nerve terminals were unaffected. After recovery of feeding and drinking behaviors the voluntary ethanol intake was not different from that of the controls. The time of ethanol-induced narcosis and the extent of ethanol-induced hypothermia were not affected. In contrast, in

In arid ecosystems, consumer communities are often structured by strong temporal fluctuations in resource availability. During midsummer in the Great Basin Desert, high temperatures and declining soil moisture cause many early-season plants to senesce, potentially concentrating arthropod activity on the few species that remain physiologically active. We characterized arthropod assemblages associated with the desert milkweed (Asclepias erosa) to evaluate its potential role as a focal plant during this seasonal period of reduced floral and vegetative productivity. Arthropods were surveyed on ran
