Obesity has tripled over the past 40 years to become a major public health issue, as it is linked with increased mortality and elevated risk for various physical and neuropsychiatric illnesses. Accumulating evidence from neuroimaging studies suggests that obesity negatively affects brain function and structure, especially within fronto-mesolimbic circuitry. Obese individuals show abnormal neural responses to food cues, taste and smell, resting-state activity and functional connectivity, and cognitive tasks including decision-making, inhibitory-control, learning/memory, and attention. The termination of a meal is controlled by dedicated neural circuits in the caudal brainstem. A key challenge is to understand how these circuits transform the sensory signals generated during feeding into dynamic control of behaviour. The caudal nucleus of the solitary tract (cNTS) is the first site in the brain where many meal-related signals are sensed and integrated1-4, but how the cNTS processes ingestive feedback during behaviour is unknown. Here we describe how prolactin-releasing hormone (PRLH) and GCG neurons, two principal cNTS cell types that promote non-aversive satiety, are regula

OBJECTIVES: Previous research has shown that critical periods of feeding skills development exist and feeding problems can arise in children due to delays in attaining feeding developmental milestones. This study aims to delineate the transitional process of feeding development in healthy children and children with gastrointestinal diseases (GIDs) and to examine the relationship between feeding milestones and the appearance of later feeding problems.
METHODS: A cross-sectional case-control study among 711 healthy Greek children and 119 children with GID, aged 2-7 years. Parents completed the

INTRODUCTION: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) are associated with overlapping brain structural differences. These often involve brain structures involved in the regulation of appetite, food intake, satiety, and reward processing. We examined the individual and interactive effects of PTSD diagnosis and MetS on cortical thickness and subcortical gray matter volumes in patients with PTSD (n = 104) compared to trauma-exposed controls (n = 97).
METHODS: Multivariate models were constructed for FreeSurfer-generated prefrontal cortical thickness and subcortical gra

Anthracnose is the major plant disease causing an economic loss of mango fruit. Anthracnose symptom is not visible at a quiescent stage and the infected fruit often enters the food chain before the infection is known. Detection of a pre-symptomatic anthracnose infection is thus, crucial to prevent the infected fruit from entering the food chain. This research applied hyperspectral imaging (HSI) spectroscopy integrated with machine learning (ML) including principal component analysis (PCA) and support vector machine (SVM) for rapid identification of quiescent infection of anthracnose in mango f

The rapid development of industrialization and agriculture has led to extensive environmental issues worldwide such as cadmium (Cd) pollution of paddy soils, posing a potential threat to environmental safety and food health. Therefore, there is an urgent need to reduce the Cd contents in paddy soils. In this study, a newly active silicon-potassium amendment was first prepared from potassium hydroxide-assisted potassium feldspar at a low temperature, and then was used to remediate a contaminated paddy soil by Cd over a long period. The obtained results demonstrated the effectiveness of the appl

Scombroid food poisoning (SFP) is a foodborne disease that develops after consumption of fresh fish and, rarely, seafood that has fine organoleptic characteristics but contains a large amount of exogenous histamine. SFP, like other food pseudo-allergic reactions (FPA), is a disorder that is clinically identical to allergic reactions type I, but there are many differences in their pathogenesis. To date, SFP has been widespread throughout the world and is an urgent problem, although exact epidemiological data on incidence varies greatly. The need to distinguish SFP from true IgE-associated aller

Umami peptides have currently become the research focus in the food umami science field and the key direction for umami agent development. This is because umami peptides have good processing characteristics, umami and nutritional values. We here used virtual screening (including online enzymolysis through ExPASy PeptideCutter, bioactivity screening using the PeptideRanker, toxicity and physicochemical property prediction using Innovagen and ToxinPred software), molecular docking, and electronic tongue analysis to identify umami peptides generated from Atlantic cod myosin. Twenty-three putative

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: Ferulic acid (FA), which occurs naturally as the feruloylated sugar ester in grains, fruits, and vegetables, is critical for combating oxidative stress and alleviating neurodegenerative diseases resulting from free radical-generated protein aggregates in brain cells. However, FA cannot be absorbed in conjugated form. Therefore, strategies to improve the bioavailability of FA are gaining more importance. Ferulic acid esterases (FAE) of the gut microbiota are critical enzymes that facilitate FA release from feruloylated sugar ester conjugates and influence systemic health.

Vitexin-2-O-rhamnoside (VR) is an important active substance in hawthorn, which is widely used as a food or functional food raw material; however, its immunomodulatory activities have not been extensively studied. In this study, BALB/c mice immunocompromised by cyclophosphamide (CY) were used as models to explore the effects of VR on the immunity and antioxidant capacity of mice. The results revealed that VR can restore weight to the immunosuppressed mice to varying degrees, improve spleen and thymus injury, and restore peripheral blood levels. Furthermore, it can effectively promote the proli

Numerous studies have demonstrated that food shapes the structure and composition of the host's oral and gut microbiota. The disorder of oral and gut microbiota may trigger various host diseases. Here, we collected oral and gut samples from wild water monitor lizards (Varanus salvator) and their captive conspecifics fed with bullfrogs, eggs, and depilated chicken, aiming to examine dietary correlates of oral and gut microbiota. We used the 16S rRNA gene sequencing technology to analyze the composition of the microbiota. Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota were the dominant phyla in the oral microb

Nutrition is the source of energy that is required to carry out all the processes of human body. A balanced diet is a combination of both macro- and micronutrients. "Nutritional inadequacy" involves an intake of nutrients that is lower than the estimated average requirement, whereas "nutritional deficiency" consists of severely reduced levels of one or more nutrients, making the body unable to normally perform its functions and thus leading to an increased risk of several diseases like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Malnutrition could be caused by environmental factors, like food scarcit

The Glycemic Index (GI) indicates the effect of a food product on the increase/decrease in postprandial blood glucose levels. Monitoring the glycemic response is important, as it is associated with the human nutrition absorption. However, human or animal blood sampling involves financial, ethical, and other challenges. Accordingly, in the recent past, many human digestion models have been developed to understand the intricate changes that occur during human digestion and absorption processes. Dynamic models help in studying the digestion mechanics and hypotheses related to the health effects o

Increasing evidence links metabolic disorders with neurodegenerative processes including Alzheimer's disease (AD). Late AD is associated with amyloid (Aβ) plaque accumulation, neuroinflammation, and central insulin resistance. Here, a humanized AD model, the 5xFAD mouse model, was used to further explore food intake, energy expenditure, neuroinflammation, and neuroendocrine signaling in the hypothalamus. Experiments were performed on 6-month-old male and female full transgenic (Tg5xFAD/5xFAD), heterozygous (Tg5xFAD/-), and non-transgenic (Non-Tg) littermates. Although histological analysis sho

Agricultural soils are under threat of toxic metal/metalloid contamination from anthropogenic activities, leading to excessive accumulation of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and mercury (Hg) in food crops that poses significant risks to human health. Understanding how these toxic metals and their methylated species are taken up, translocated, and detoxified is prerequisite to developing strategies to limit their accumulation for safer food. Toxic metals are taken up and transported across different cellular compartments and plant tissues via various transporters for essential or benefi
