BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency, the most widespread micronutrient deficiency globally, is especially common among women and seriously impacts their health considerably. The symptom spectrum in non-anemic iron deficiency (NAID) is less well described than in anemic forms. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the diversity and frequency of symptoms in NAID and compare with anemic cases and explore the association of symptoms with biomarkers.
METHODS: This retrospective and cross-sectional study was conducted on female patients at a university hospital. Patients admitted to the iron deficiency

BACKGROUND: Post-thyroidectomy dysphonia is a common complication, often resulting from transient laryngeal nerve dysfunction, intubation-related trauma, and postoperative inflammation. Nutritional supplementation with alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) and B vitamins has been proposed to support neural recovery, reduce oxidative stress, and inflammation. This randomized clinical trial aimed to evaluate the expected anti-inflammatory effects of such supplementation in improving micro-ischemia/thrombosis affecting nerve function that may lead to post-thyroidectomy dysphonia as a result of manipulations du

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Poverty and child malnutrition are deeply interconnected. Socioeconomic disparities limit access to adequate nutrition, healthcare, and education, and can lead to long-term developmental and economic consequences. This study examines the relationship between poverty and nutritional status, micronutrient deficiencies, and recent illnesses in children in Lebanon.
METHODS: Data was collected as part of a national stratified cross-sectional household-based survey conducted in 2023. A total of 1,594 children aged 0-59 months were included in the analysis. Principal component

Early life microbial colonization and factors affecting colonization patterns are gaining interest due to recent developments suggesting that early life microbiome may play a role in Developmental Origins of Health and Disease. In cattle, limited information exists on the early microbial colonization of anatomical sites involved in bovine health beyond the gastrointestinal tract. Here, we investigated 1) the initial microbial colonization of seven different anatomical locations in newborn calves and 2) whether these early life microbial communities and 3) serum cytokine profiles are influenced

Health disparities among people experiencing homelessness are likely exacerbated by limited access to healthy, fresh, and minimally processed foods. Soup kitchens and shelters serve as essential food safety nets for preventing hunger in this population, and community interest is growing in the potential of "food is medicine" interventions to improve the mental and physical wellbeing of people who receive meals from these providers. This study describes our two-phase approach to first identify and prioritize nutrition needs within an urban soup kitchen community and then test and implement new

Anemia and iron deficiency (ID) are common complications in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), but their underlying causes remain unclear. This study investigated the incidence and characteristics of anemia and micronutrient deficiencies in PDAC patients before initiating chemotherapy. A total of 103 PDAC patients were included, comprising 67 in the palliative and 36 in the adjuvant groups. The overall incidence of anemia was 42.7% (n = 44), with comparable rates in both groups. Normocytic and normochromic anemia were predominant, with mild and moderate cases observed in 32

BACKGROUND: Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient that is important to both animals and humans. Furthermore, scientists are increasingly interested in boosting the Se content of food products for human consumption, such as Se-enriched meat, because it has been shown to have a positive effect on human health. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of green synthesized nano selenium (GNS) on broiler chicken growth performance, meat selenium content, intestinal microflora, intestinal morphology, and immune response to sodium selenite (SS) as inorganic Se.

Vitamin D is an essential micronutrient whose demand is heightened during pregnancy to support the growth of the fetus. Furthermore, the fetus does not produce vitamin D and hence relies exclusively on the supply of maternal vitamin D through the placenta. Vitamin D inadequacy is linked with pregnancy complications and adverse infant outcomes. Hence, early predictive markers of vitamin D inadequacy such as genetic vulnerability are important to both mother and offspring. In this multi-ethnic Asian birth cohort study, we report the first genome-wide association analysis (GWAS) of maternal and f

BACKGROUND: Despite the growing evidence that malaria and anaemia are two interlinked health problems of school-aged children (SAC) in developing countries, there is scarce information about malaria among SAC in Ethiopia. Moreover, anaemia-related studies were more concentrated in easily accessible areas. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of malaria and anaemia and corresponding risk factors among SAC in Dara Mallo and Uba Debretshay districts, in hard to reach areas, so as to inform appropriate integrated interventions for both diseases.
METHODS: This study was part of baseline data

BACKGROUND: In adults, oral iron doses increase plasma hepcidin (PHep) for 24 h, but not for 48 h, and there is a circadian increase in PHep over the day. Because high PHep decreases fractional iron absorption (FIA), alternate day iron dosing in the morning may be preferable to consecutive day dosing. Whether these effects occur in infants is uncertain.
OBJECTIVE: Using stable iron isotopes in Kenyan infants, we compared FIA from morning and afternoon doses and from consecutive, alternate (every second day) and every third day iron doses.
METHODS: In prospective studies, we measured and comp

South Asia has >50% of the global burden of low birth weight (LBW). The objective was to determine the extent to which maternal nutrition interventions commenced before conception or in the 1st trimester improved fetal growth in this region. This was a secondary analysis of combined newborn anthropometric data for the South Asian sites (India and Pakistan) in the Women First Preconception Maternal Nutrition Trial. Participants were 972 newborn of mothers who were poor, rural, unselected on basis of nutritional status, and had been randomized to receive a daily lipid-based micronutrient supplem

BACKGROUND: Vitamin A plays an important role in vision, cellular differentiation, embryonic development, reproduction, growth and the immune system. Women who live in developing countries face a risk of undernutrition during pregnancy as a result of poverty, poor diet quality and quantity, and a high fertility rate. This poor dietary problem could reflect the high risk of vitamin A deficiency in women. The present study aimed to determine the adequacy of vitamin A among pregnant women following antenatal care in health facilities of Dessie Town, Ethiopia, January 2017.

A 45-year-old man with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes (T2DM) (HbA1c 87 mmol/mol) despite 100 units of insulin per day and severe obesity (BMI 40.2 kg/m2) was referred for bariatric intervention. He declined bariatric surgery or GLP1 agonist therapy. Initially, his glycaemic control improved with dietary modification and better adherence to insulin therapy, but he gained weight. We started a low-energy liquid diet, with 2.2 L of semi-skimmed milk (equivalent to 1012 kcal) per day for 8 weeks (along with micronutrient, salt and fibre supplementation) followed by 16 weeks of phased reintroduct

BACKGROUND: Until recently, WHO recommended daily iron supplementation for all pregnant women (60 mg/d iron combined with 400ug/d folic acid) where anaemia rates exceeded 40 %. Recent studies indicate that this may pose a risk to pregnant women. Therefore, there is a need to explore screen-and-treat options to minimise iron exposure during pregnancy using an overall lower dosage of iron that would achieve equivalent results as being currently recommended by the WHO. However, there is a lack of agreement on how to best assess iron deficiency when infections are prevalent. Here, we test the use

BACKGROUND: In rural Bangladesh, more than 75% of all births occur at home in the absence of skilled birth attendants. Population-based data are lacking on the burden and risk factors for obstetric complications in settings with low rates of institutional delivery. We sought to describe the prevalence of reported complications and to analyze risk factors for obstetric complications and near misses, using data from a representative, rural setting of Bangladesh.
METHODS: This study utilized existing data on 42,214 pregnant women enrolled in a micronutrient supplementation cohort trial between 2

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that low serum zinc levels may be associated with suboptimal outcomes of pregnancy such as prolonged labour, atonic postpartum haemorrhage, pregnancy-induced hypertension, preterm labour and post-term pregnancies, although many of these associations have not yet been established.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of zinc supplementation in pregnancy on maternal, fetal, neonatal and infant outcomes.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group's Trials Register (30 September 2011) and reference lists of retrieved studies.

BACKGROUND: Childhood anaemia is considered a severe public health problem in most countries of sub-Saharan Africa. We investigated the geographical distribution of prevalence of anaemia and mean haemoglobin concentration (Hb) in children aged 1-4 y (preschool children) in West Africa. The aim was to estimate the geographical risk profile of anaemia accounting for malnutrition, malaria, and helminth infections, the risk of anaemia attributable to these factors, and the number of anaemia cases in preschool children for 2011.

BACKGROUND: Many individuals at risk of malaria also have micronutrient deficiencies that may hamper protective immunity. Vitamin A is central to normal immune function, and supplementation has been shown to lower the morbidity of some infectious diseases. We investigated the effect of vitamin A supplementation on malaria morbidity.
METHODS: This randomised double-blind placebo-controlled trial of vitamin A supplementation took place in a P. falciparum endemic area of Papua New Guinea. Of 520 potentially eligible children aged 6-60 months, 480 were randomly assigned high-dose vitamin A (n=239

The process of embryonic nutrition in rodent conceptuses during organogenesis has been shown to involve a dominant histiotrophic mechanism where essential developmental substrates and micronutrients are supplied as whole maternal proteins or cargoes associated with proteins. The histiotrophic nutrition pathways (HNP) responsible for uptake and initial processing of proteins across maternal-conceptal interfaces involve uptake via receptor mediated endocytosis and protein degradation via lysosomal proteolysis. Chemical inhibition of either process can lead to growth deficits and malformation in …
