Do dual-route models accurately predict reading and spelling performance in individuals with acquired alexia and agraphia?

Coltheart and co-workers [Castles, A., Bates, T. C., & Coltheart, M. (2006). John Marshall and the developmental dyslexias. Aphasiology, 20, 871-892; Coltheart, M., Rastle, K., Perry, C., Langdon, R., & Ziegler, J. (2001). DRC: A dual route cascaded model of visual word recognition and reading aloud. Psychological Review, 108, 204-256] have demonstrated that an equation derived from dual-route theory accurately predicts reading performance in young normal readers and in children with reading impairment due to developmental dyslexia or stroke. In this paper, we present evidence that the dual-ro

Meta-analysis of the literature on diagnostic accuracy of SPECT in parkinsonian syndromes.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder. One of the most widely used techniques to diagnose PD is a Single Photon Emission Computer Tomography (SPECT) scan to visualise the integrity of the dopaminergic pathways in the brain. Despite this there remains some discussion on the value of SPECT in the differential diagnosis of PD. We did a meta-analysis of all the existing literature on the diagnostic accuracy of both pre- and post-synaptic SPECT imaging in the differential diagnosis of PD. METHODS: Relevant studies were searched in Medline, EMBASE

Right occipital cortex suppresses male rat testosterone secretion by a pituitary-independent mechanism.

OBJECTIVES: In addition to being regulated by the hypothalamo-hypophyseal system, testosterone (T) secretion is influenced by a number of less understood mechanisms. The aim of the present study was to examine whether defined areas of the right cerebral cortex could modulate T production. METHODS: In adult male Wistar rats right frontal or occipital decortication, anterior or posterior callosotomy and corresponding sham-operations were performed. After 7-day survival time, T secretion in vitro, serum T and LH concentrations were measured by RIA. RESULTS: Right occipital decortication and pos

Dopamine and monogamy.

Social attachments play a central role in human society. In fact, such attachments are so important that deficits in the ability to form meaningful social bonds are associated with a variety of psychological disorders. Although mother-infant bonding has been studied for many years, we only recently have begun to examine the processes that underlie social bonds between adults. Over the past decade, central dopamine has become a focus of such research, especially its role in pair bonding between mates in species that display monogamous life strategies. Neuroanatomical and pharmacological studies

[Tumour of the corpus callosum: the association between interhemispheric disconnection and an anterograde amnesia syndrome].

INTRODUCTION: Sperry, or interhemispheric disconnection, syndrome was reported in patients who had undergone surgical section of the corpus callosum carried out in an attempt to control medication-resistant epilepsy. It has occasionally been linked to tumours of the corpus callosum and, although even more rarely, it has also been associated to an amnesic syndrome. In this paper we report the anatomical and neuropsychological findings in a patient with interhemispheric disconnection syndrome associated to a hippocampal-type amnesic syndrome, caused by a tumour in the splenius of the corpus call

Striatal synaptic plasticity: implications for motor learning and Parkinson's disease.

Changing the strength of synaptic connections between neurons is widely assumed to be the mechanism by which memory traces are encoded and stored in the central nervous system. Plastic changes appear to follow a regional specialization and underlie the specific type of memory mediated by the brain area in which plasticity occurs. Thus, long-term changes occurring at excitatory corticostriatal synapses should be critically involved in motor learning. Indeed, repetitive stimulation of the corticostriatal pathway can cause either a long-lasting increase or an enduring decrease in synaptic strengt

Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita with callosal agenesis and dentato-olivary dysplasia.

We report the autopsy case of a boy with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, associated with callosal agenesis and dentato-olivary dysplasia. The patient manifested with dysmorphic facial features and suffered from intractable epilepsy during the neonatal period. These sets of complications suggest that a common molecular mechanism may be involved in the development of corpus callosum and the folding of the dentate and inferior olivary nuclei. Deep brain structures, including the brainstem and the cerebellum, may be involved in the pathophysiology of symptomatic generalized epilepsy. The diffe

Supraspinal connections of the reproductive organs: structural and functional aspects.

Gonadal functions are governed by the hypothalamo-hypophyseal system. Other organs of the reproduction tract are under the regulatory action of gonadal steroids. In the past two decades several data have been accumulated on the involvement of fine-tuning control mechanisms which include autocrine and paracrine effects of biologically active substances produced locally and the regulatory action of nerves innervating the organs of the system. Recent studies using the viral transsynaptic technique have revealed cell groups in the central nervous system that are transneuronally connected with the

Rhythmic arm movement is not discrete.

Rhythmic movements, such as walking, chewing or scratching, are phylogenetically old motor behaviors found in many organisms, ranging from insects to primates. In contrast, discrete movements, such as reaching, grasping or kicking, are behaviors that have reached sophistication primarily in younger species, particularly primates. Neurophysiological and computational research on arm motor control has focused almost exclusively on discrete movements, essentially assuming similar neural circuitry for rhythmic tasks. In contrast, many behavioral studies have focused on rhythmic models, subsuming d

Acute nerve injury induces long-term potentiation of C-fiber evoked field potentials in spinal dorsal horn of intact rat.

Nerve injury produces a long lasting neuropathic pain, manifested as allodynia, a decrease in pain threshold and hyperalgesia, an increase in response to noxious stimuli. The mechanism underlying the lasting abnormal pain is not well understood. Our previous works have shown that electrical tetanic stimulation of the sciatic nerve induces long-term potentiation (LTP) of C-fiber evoked field potentials in the spinal dorsal horn, which is considered as a synaptic model of pathological pain. In the present study we tested if nerve injury, which is proved to produce neuropathic pain, induced the s

Vestibular nucleus projections to the Edinger-Westphal and anteromedian nuclei of rabbits.

The Edinger-Westphal nucleus (EW), anteromedian nucleus (AM) and adjacent neurons in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) are sources of preganglionic parasympathetic innervation of intraocular smooth muscle, including blood vessels, pupillary muscle and the ciliary body in mammals. They also have central connections that are believed to affect parasympathetic outflow indirectly. This study utilized anterograde transport of biotinylated dextran amine and Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin to demonstrate direct projections from the vestibular nuclei to the Edinger-Westphal and anteromedian nuclei i

[Hereditary spastic paraplegias].

Hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSP) are characterised by symmetric spastic paraplegia, pallhypaesthesia, and urinary dysfunction (uncomplicated HSP). Complicated HSP is present if uncomplicated HSP additionally presents with epilepsy, dementia, cataract, extrapyramidal dysfunction, amyotrophy, polyneuropathy, or ichthyosis. Clinically, HSP are similar but genetically even more heterogeneous. The disease course is slowly progressive and, the earlier the disease onset, the slower the course. Causes of HSP are mutations in 20 different genes, of which eight have been identified so far. A single

Neurotransmitter systems of the medial prefrontal cortex: potential role in sensitization to psychostimulants.

The mesocorticolimbic dopamine system, which arises in the ventral tegmental area and innervates the nucleus accumbens, among numerous other regions, has been implicated in processes associated with drug addiction, including behavioral sensitization. Behavioral sensitization is the enhanced motor-stimulant response that occurs with repeated exposure to psychostimulants. The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), defined as the cortical region that has a reciprocal innervation with the mediodorsal nucleus of the thalamus, is also a terminal region of the mesocorticolimbic dopamine system. The mPFC co

[Sensory sensitization, part II: Pathophysiology in dysfunctional disorders. Understanding the inner life of the nerve pathways may explain hitherto unexplainable symptoms].

This article is based on a vast clinical experience from patients presenting with widespread pain syndromes as well as dysfunctional symptoms from inner organs. A literature survey has been performed. Allodynia and hyperalgesia that partly explain the fibromyalgia and local myalgia syndromes seem to arise from a pathophysiological process of nociceptive sensitisation. It is proposed that the concept of "sensory sensitisation dysfunctional disorders" be applied to conditions like bronchial hyperreactivity, Da Costas syndrome, Dercum's disease (Adipositas dolorosa), dry eyes and mouth syndrome,

Axial lateropulsion as a sole manifestation of lateral medullary infarction: a clinical variant related to rostral-dorsolateral lesion.

A 63-year-old woman presented with an isolated axial lateropulsion as a sole manifestation of lateral medullary infarction. She had no vertigo, nystagmus, dysphagia, hiccup, facial/hemisensory loss, Horner syndrome, and limb ataxia. Brain MRI showed a small infarct selectively involving the most dorsolateral portion of the rostral medulla. This patient illustrates that lateral medullary infarction may present as an isolated lateropulsion. The possible mechanism of an isolated lateropulsion is described.

Posttraumatic tremor without parkinsonism in a patient with complete contralateral loss of the nigrostriatal pathway.

We present a patient with posttraumatic tremor who did not show any [(123)I]FP-CIT uptake in the contralateral putamen and caudate. The absence of hypokinesia and rigidity is surprising in the presence of a striatal dopaminergic denervation that is even more severe than in Parkinson's disease. An explanation, therefore, could be that the lesion in the subthalamic nucleus in our patient prevented the onset of a Parkinson syndrome.

Sensory determinants of thermal pain.

It is still unclear whether the quality of painful thermal sensation is determined only by conduction in specific, dedicated nociceptive channels (i.e. C or Adelta nociceptors) or whether it is a result of integrated activity in both nociceptive and non-nociceptive systems. To evaluate this question, we conducted quantitative and qualitative somatosensory testing in spinal cord injury subjects who suffered from partial or complete loss of thermal sensibility. Testing was performed in skin areas, below the level of the lesion, which were either lacking any thermal sensibility, lacking only one

Evidence of neuroanatomical connection between the superior cervical ganglion and hypoglossal nerve in the hamster as revealed by tract-tracing and degeneration methods.

Previous studies have shown the existence of a sympathetic component in some cranial nerves including the hypoglossal nerve. In this study, the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) tract-tracing retrograde technique and experimental degeneration method were used to elucidate the possible neuroanatomical relationship between the superior cervical ganglion (SCG) and the hypoglossal nerve of hamsters. About 10% of the SCG principal neurons were HRP positive following the tracer application to the trunk of hypoglossal nerve. Most of the HRP-labelled neurons were multipolar and were randomly distributed in

Effect of focal and nonfocal cerebral lesions on functional connectivity studied with MR imaging.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Functional connectivity MR (fcMR) imaging is used to map regions of brain with synchronous, regional, slow fluctuations in cerebral blood flow. We tested the hypothesis that focal cerebral lesions do not eradicate expected functional connectivity. METHODS: Functional MR (fMR) and fcMR maps were acquired for 12 patients with focal cerebral tumors, cysts, arteriovenous malformations, or in one case, agenesis of the corpus callosum. Task activation secondary to text listening, finger tapping, and word generation was mapped by use of fMR imaging. Functional connectivity wa

Early commitment of embryonic neocortical cells to develop area-specific thalamic connections.

In this study we examined the thalamic connectivity developed by grafts of embryonic (E16) parietal or occipital cortex placed homo- or heterotopically into the neocortex of newborn rats. We also examined the cytoarchitectonic organization developed by the grafts. Our findings indicate that E16 parietal cortex grafted into the parietal cortex of newborn recipients develops reciprocal connections with the host thalamic ventrobasal complex (VB) but does not establish connections with the host dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (DLG). When implanted into the occipital cortex, these grafts are stil
