Comparative Study of Malocclusions between Cancer Patients and Healthy Peers.

Background. There is lack of data related to dental occlusion among children cured from cancer. The aim of our study was to compare the prevalence of malocclusion in cancer survivors and in healthy peers. Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 225 children aged between 4 and 18 years, including 75 cancer survivors, and 150 sex and age-matched controls. All patients were orthodontically examined and malocclusion traits were recorded. In the cancer group, 75 panoramic radiographs were used to evaluate the prevalence of dental anomalies and dental age using the Demirjian scale. Data we

A review of health-related quality of life associated with pneumococcal disease: pooled estimates by age and type of disease.

BACKGROUND: Estimates in the research literature on the health-related quality of life (QOL) associated with pneumococcal disease exhibit variation. It complicates the selection of estimates in modeling projects that evaluate the health impact and economic value of the prevention and treatment. This study reviewed the literature and developed pooled QOL estimates associated with pneumococcal disease states. METHODS: We searched peer-reviewed literature for studies that reported pneumococcal disease-related QOL estimates. For each study, we extracted QOL estimates and categorized by age group

Neurocognitive outcomes of older National Football League retirees.

OBJECTIVE: Determine if head-injury exposure relates to later-in-life cognitive decline in older National Football League (NFL) retirees. METHOD: NFL retirees (aged 50+) with or without cognitive impairment underwent baseline (n = 53) and follow-up (n = 29; 13-59 months later) neuropsychological evaluations. Cognitively normal (CN) retirees (n = 26) were age- and education-matched to healthy controls (n = 26). Cognitively impaired (CI) retirees with mild cognitive impairment or dementia (n = 27) were matched to a clinical sample (CS) by age, sex, education, and diagnosis (n = 83). ANOVAs comp

Clinicians' Racial Bias Contributing to Disparities in Electroconvulsive Therapy for Patients From Racial-Ethnic Minority Groups.

Patients from racial-ethnic minority groups undergo disparate electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) treatment compared with Caucasian peers. One leading hypothesis is that clinicians may unknowingly display racial bias when considering ECT for patients of color. Studies have consistently shown that patients of color face numerous racially driven, provider-level interpersonal and perceptual biases that contribute to clinicians incorrectly overdiagnosing them as having a psychotic-spectrum illness rather than correctly diagnosing a severe affective disorder. A patient's diagnosis marks the entry to ev

Morphology and Syntax in Arabic-Speaking Adolescents Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Purpose Diagnoses, assessments, and treatments, as well as social and language interventions, can be effective in identifying and interpreting specific linguistic features that present special challenges to the language abilities of individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH). This article reports on a study analyzing complex sentences and morphosyntactic error production by Arabic-speaking adolescents who are hearing and DHH. Method A total of 124 adolescents participated, all native speakers of Arabic in Grades 6-10 (63 hearing and 61 DHH). The participants were asked to provide an or

Involving Family and Social Support Systems in Tobacco Cessation Treatment for Patients With Cancer.

Individuals from the family and social support network of patients with cancer can have a pivotal role in reinforcing patients' efforts to become and remain tobacco-free. This support is critical along the entire continuum of cancer care. Although NCI-designated Cancer Centers across the United States are increasingly offering tobacco cessation services as a result of the NCI Cancer Center Cessation Initiative (C3I), engaging patients' family and other support network in tobacco treatment is not yet a routine practice. To facilitate the consideration and involvement of patients' social support

Anhedonia in eating disorders: A meta-analysis and systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Anhedonia, or loss of pleasure, is related to deficits in reward processing across a variety of psychiatric disorders. In light of research suggesting abnormal reward processing in eating disorders (EDs), the study of anhedonia in EDs may yield important insights into the role of reward in eating pathology. This meta-analysis and review aimed to provide both a quantitative and qualitative synthesis of the existing literature on this topic. METHOD: We conducted this research (or these meta-analyses) according to PRISMA guidelines. We searched four databases for both peer-reviewed an

Adolescents' Understanding of Opioid-Induced Euphoria Measures and Proposed Measurement Revisions.

Prescription opioid misuse is an unintended consequence of acute pain management. Opioid-induced euphoria (OIE) with first therapeutic opioid exposure may influence opioid misuse. OIE is not assessed in clinical care and self-report measures of OIE have not been validated in adolescents. We (1) determined adolescents' ability to understand existing self-reported OIE measures, (2) revised measures for better understanding by this population, and (3) established initial content validity of revised measures with adolescents. Using runner's euphoria to simulate OIE in Study 1, 29 adolescents' (14

The most 100 cited papers in addiction research on cannabis, heroin, cocaine and psychostimulants. A bibliometric cross-sectional analysis.

The number of citations a peer-reviewed article receives is often used as a measure of its importance and scientific impact. This paper identifies, describes and categorizes the highly cited papers in addiction research on cannabis, heroin, cocaine and psychostimulants. Highly cited papers were identified in the Web of Science Core Collection database. Several bibliometric indicators were calculated. Social network analysis was applied to draw groups of authors and institutions with the greatest number of collaborations and co-words. The number of citations for the top 100 cited articles range

Children at risk for dyslexia show deficient left-hemispheric memory representations for new spoken word forms.

Developmental dyslexia is a specific learning disorder with impairments in reading and spelling acquisition. Apart from literacy problems, dyslexics show inefficient speech encoding and deficient novel word learning, with underlying problems in phonological processing and learning. These problems have been suggested to be related to deficient specialization of the left hemisphere for language processing. To examine this possibility, we tracked with magnetoencephalography (MEG) the activation of the bilateral temporal cortices during formation of neural memory traces for new spoken word forms i

Neural correlates of cognitive variability in childhood autism and relation to heterogeneity in decision-making dynamics.

Heterogeneity in cognitive and academic abilities is a prominent feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), yet little is known about its underlying causes. Here we combine functional brain imaging during numerical problem-solving with hierarchical drift-diffusion models of behavior and standardized measures of numerical abilities to investigate neural mechanisms underlying cognitive variability in children with ASD, and their IQ-matched Typically Developing (TD) peers. Although the two groups showed similar levels of brain activation, the relation to individual abilities differed markedly in

Effect of spironolactone on cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in patients with hypertension and glucose metabolism disorders (ESCAM): a study protocol for a pragmatic randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertension combined with diabetes and hypokalemia is more likely to develop hyperaldosteronism and is at higher risk of cardiovascular events. There is evidence that activation of aldosterone and mineralocorticoid receptors may play a significant role in the occurrence of cardiovascular events in patients with hypertension and diabetes. Clinical studies have demonstrated that spironolactone can reduce the incidence of cardiovascular events in patients with chronic kidney diseases or severe heart failure. However, the effect of spironolactone on cardiovascular risk in patients w
