Class change in the personal illness hierarchy.

Sixty-eight psychiatric in-patients who had completed the Delusions-Symptoms-States Inventory (D.S.S.I.) on admission were retested after one month. On first testing 92.6 per cent conformed to the hierarchy of classes of personal illness model, and on the second occasion 91.2 per cent. Of those who could improve, 72 per cent did so, most commonly by moving down one hierarchy class, e.g. from the Neurotic Symptoms class to the Dysthymic States class. (On the other hand only 30 per cent of the 61 patients who originally reported symptoms did not do so after one month.) Thus although it is clear

The mediating role of psychological flexibility in the association of autistic-like traits with burnout and depression in medical students during clinical clerkships in Japan: a university-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Burnout and depression among medical students is linked to serious problems that require appropriate solutions. Subthreshold autism traits or autistic-like traits (ALTs) may be possible factors associated with burnout and depression. The effectiveness of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for burnout and depression has been widely reported. The treatment aims to improve psychological flexibility, a concept indicating engagement in personal value-based behaviors without avoiding uncomfortable private experiences. This study examined whether ALTs were associated with burnout or

Self-Representations of Military Veterans Suffering From Chronic Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: The Role of Sport.

Background: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric illness that is very prevalent in both civilian and military environments. The clinical course, regardless of management, is chronic for a number of patients, especially veterans. Persistent PTSD symptoms interact with representations of the person and their body, and may negatively impact rehabilitation. Sport is known to help psychiatric patients such as those suffering from PTSD, as it improves the connection with the body, and supports physiological and emotional regulation. However, the impact of sport on self-representati

Associations between self-management strategies and clinical outcomes in depression: a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Self-management is essential for coping with depressive symptoms, yet little is known about its associations with depressive symptoms and personal recovery. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional questionnaire survey of 183 outpatients with major depressive disorder in Japan between October 2024 and June 2025. Participants reported the use and perceived usefulness of 63 self-management strategies. Associations between the number of strategies and symptom severity and recovery were examined using Spearman's rank correlation coefficients with the Japanese versions of the Quick Inve

Unification of Treatments and Interventions for Tinnitus Patients (UNITI): a study protocol for a multi-center randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus represents a relatively common condition in the global population accompanied by various comorbidities and severe burden in many cases. Nevertheless, there is currently no general treatment or cure, presumable due to the heterogeneity of tinnitus with its wide variety of etiologies and tinnitus phenotypes. Hence, most treatment studies merely demonstrated improvement in a subgroup of tinnitus patients. The majority of studies are characterized by small sample sizes, unstandardized treatments and assessments, or applications of interventions targeting only a single organ le

Investigating environmental links between parent depression and child depressive/anxiety symptoms using an assisted conception design.

OBJECTIVE: Links between maternal and offspring depression symptoms could arise from inherited factors, direct environmental exposure, or shared adversity. A novel genetically sensitive design was used to test the extent of environmental links between maternal depression symptoms and child depression/anxiety symptoms, accounting for inherited effects, shared adversity, and child age and gender. METHOD: Eight hundred fifty-two families with a child born by assisted conception provided questionnaire data. Mothers and fathers were genetically related or unrelated to the child depending on concep

Core schemas and suicidality in a chronically traumatized population.

The Young Schema Questionnaire (YSQ) has been demonstrated to tap into core beliefs, or maladaptive schemas, of clinical populations. This study used the YSQ to investigate maladaptive schemas of 137 chronically traumatized patients seeking outpatient psychiatric treatment and to assess whether specific schemas might be associated with suicide risk in this population. Participants completed a modified version of the YSQ-S (short form), post-traumatic diagnostic scale, dissociative experiences scale and self-harm and risk behaviors questionnaire-revised at treatment intake. Assessment of effect modification in associations between biomarkers of prenatal glyphosate exposure and child neurodevelopment in Puerto Rico.

BACKGROUND: Glyphosate (GLY)-based herbicides are widely used globally, and GLY and its degradant aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) have been associated with impaired neurogenesis and synaptogenesis in toxicological studies. Additionally, breastfeeding supports neurodevelopment, but limited research on GLY in human milk makes its role as an infant exposure source unclear. METHODS: The study population comprised mother-child pairs (n = 284) enrolled between 2011 and 2017 in the Puerto Rico Testsite for Exploring Contamination Threats birth cohort in Puerto Rico and its follow-up studies. Beyond the auditory: anxiety bridges sleep disturbances and depressive symptoms to tinnitus handicap.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is closely associated with psychological factors including anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances. However, how these variables interact to influence tinnitus severity remains poorly understood, warranting further exploration. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed data from 285 patients with tinnitus, utilizing the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), Self-Rating Scale of Sleep (SRSS), and Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) as assessment instruments. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were performed to identify psychos

Factors Affecting Opioid Treatment in Cancer Patients.

PURPOSE: Pain is prevalent in cancer patients, appearing to be moderate to severe in more than one third of them. Despite the fact that fentanyl is widely used with effective analgesic results, some patients do not correspond to treatment, resulting in opioid change. METHODS: This is a cohort study, performed in Greek patients with cancer. Its scope was to identify potential reasons responsible for opioid change, due to transdermal-fentanyl intolerance, resulting from inadequate analgesia (pain relief<33% in 1week) and/or unacceptable adverse-events (grade≥3 at Common Terminology Criteria-v4.
