The aim of this experiment was to investigate the main and interactive effects of sodium bicarbonate (SB) supplementation level (1% vs. 3% of dietary DM) and the grain source (barley vs. corn grain) in calf starter feed containing 5% chopped alfalfa hay. Our hypothesis was that a higher SB level would improve calf performance by buffering rumen pH and that the grain source of the calf starter feed would differentially influence rumen fermentation. Further, we hypothesized an interaction effect where a higher SB supplementation level would provide greater benefits in barley-based starter diets

Epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) causes severe disease in ruminants. We assessed the pathogenicity of the Chinese EHDV-7 isolate YN09 in mice lacking the type I interferon receptor and in sheep. In mice, YN09 infection resulted in 100% mortality, with histopathological lesions, viral replication, and immunoreactivity in multiple organs. In sheep, infection with this virus resulted in transient RNAemia and low-level production of neutralizing antibodies, but no clinical signs or viremia were observed. These findings contrast YN09's high murine virulence with sheep resistance, suggesti…

Akabane virus (AKAV), belonging to the genus Orthobunyavirus and family Peribunyaviridae, causes reproductive and congenital abnormalities in ruminants. Its envelope glycoprotein Gc is a neutralizing antigen, on which at least five distinct antigenic regions have been identified. We attempted to identify the domains using truncated recombinant AKAV Gc proteins expressed in Escherichia coli and monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) with AKAV-neutralizing activity. Dot blot analysis revealed that amino acid positions 1-97 and 189-397 (Gc1-97 and Gc189-397) in the truncated recombinant proteins reacted wi…

Brucellosis is a globally reemerging and neglected zoonosis causing serious public health problems as well as considerable economic losses d … d infection control measures in Kyrgyzstan. Particularly, introduction of mass vaccination in small ruminants evidently contributed to control of brucellosis in Kyrgyzstan, reducing the number of infections in animals as well as humans.

Antibodies to West Nile virus (WNV) were examined by plaque-reduction neutralization test in the blood sera of 1023 wild artiodactyls: 105 roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), 148 red deer (Cervus elaphus), 287 fallow deer (Dama dama), 71 mouflons (Ovis musimon), and 412 wild boars (Sus scrofa), sampled in South Moravian district of Breclav (Czech Republic) in the years 1990-2008. Neutralizing antibodies were detected in 5.9% of wild ruminants (4.8% roe deer, 4.1% red deer, 6.3% fallow deer, 9.9% mouflons) and 4.1% of wild boars, with titers ranging between 1:20 and 1:320. The results indicate that…

Here, we sequenced, assembled and annotated the mitochondrial (mt) genomes of two operational taxonomic units of Babesia from sheep from Chi … s markers for future population genetic and molecular epidemiological studies of Babesia from small ruminants. We propose that the sequencing-bioinformatic approach used here should be applicable to a wide range of protists of veterinary importance.

Q fever is a zoonosis produced by Coxiella burnetii, a bacterium that is widely distributed worldwide. Domestic ruminants are the most important source of C. burnetii for human infection. In sheep and goats, abortion is the main clinical consequence of infection, yet the symptoms described in cattle have so far been inconsistent. Q fever has been also scarcely reported in cattle, most likely because of its difficult diagnosis at the farm level and because of the many existing responsible C. burnetii strains. In this report, the effects of C. burnetii infection or Q fever disease on the reprodu…

Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) is a worldwide occurring sporadic disease of cloven-hoofed animals. For the first time, this case report describes clinical and pathological as well as histopathological findings in an alpaca suffering from MCF caused by ovine herpesvirus 2. Clinical symptoms comprised apathy, dehydration, anorexia, and emaciation. These symptoms were unspecific and did not correspond to any known course of MCF in cattle. However, the findings of the pathological and histopathological examination showed broad analogies to the main findings in other ruminants infected with MCF. I…

In May-June 2011, a massive outbreak of haemolytic uraemic syndrome caused by enteroaggregative Shiga toxin (Stx)-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O104:H4 occurred in Europe, which was linked to the consumption of sprouted seeds. As ruminants are known reservoirs of STEC, this study investigated whether cattle could be a reservoir of enteroaggregative STEC O104:H4 and a potential source of transmission to humans. A total of 1468 French cattle were analysed for faecal carriage of the outbreak strain by PCR assays targeting stx2, wzx(O104), fliC(H4) and aggR genetic markers. None of the faecal …

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) strains of O157:H7 serotype are a predominant cause of haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) worldwide, but strains of non-O157 serotypes can also be associated with serious disease. Some of them are associated with outbreaks of HUS, others with sporadic cases of HUS, and some with diarrhoea but not with outbreaks or HUS. A large number of STEC serotypes isolated from ruminants and foods have never been associated with human disease. In this study we characterize a STEC strain belonging to serotype O171:H25 that is responsible for a case of HUS. This s…

Numerous mammal species, including domestic and wild animals such as ruminants, dogs, cats and rodents, as well as humans, serve as reservoir hosts for various Bartonella species. Some of those species that exploit non-human mammals as reservoir hosts have zoonotic potential. Our understanding of interactions between bartonellae and reservoir hosts has been greatly improved by the development of animal models for infection and the use of molecular tools allowing large scale mutagenesis of Bartonella species. By reviewing and combining the results of these and other approaches we can obtain a c…

The sheep (Ovis aries) is somewhat less common than smaller species in laboratory settings, but personnel who work with sheep or in a facility that houses sheep should be aware that certain zoonotic diseases are common in sheep. They should also know how to prevent transmission of zoonotic disease in facilities that house or work with small ruminants. Knowledge of diseases such as query fever (Q fever), which can cause severe human morbidity (and in some cases death), needs to be especially emphasized. In this paper, the author describes potential causes, transmission and manifestations of Q f…

Bluetongue virus (BTV) is an arthropod-borne virus infecting domestic and wild ruminants. Infection in cattle is commonly asymptomatic and characterised by a long viraemia. Associated with the emergence and the recrudescence of BTV serotype 8 (BTV-8) in Northern and Central Europe, remarkable differences have been noticed in the transmission and in the clinical expression of the disease, with cattle showing clinical illness and reproductive disorders such as abortion, stillbirth and fetal abnormalities. Several investigations have already indicated the putative ability of the European BTV-8 st…

Bartonella spp. are gram-negative bacteria localized in erythrocytes of vertebrate hosts. Genus Bartonella contains numerous recently described species, many of them are new and emerging arthropod-borne human pathogens. In addition to humans, Bartonella spp. have also been isolated from a variety of domesticated (cats, dogs) and wild animals (carnivores, ruminants, rodents), which play a key role as reservoir hosts for these pathogens. The infectious process and the pathogenesis of bartonellosis are still poorly understood. The present paper reviews the factors influencing Bartonella infection…

Bezoars are conglomerates of food or fiber in the alimentary tract of humans and certain animals, mainly ruminants. A trichobezoar represents a mass of accumulated hair. Trichobezoars may present as an isolated gastric mass, as an extension into the small intestine, or as an independent fragmented mass in the small intestine. The presence of discrete coexisting gastric and ileal trichobezoars has been reported only rarely in the literature. This is a case report of a 9-year-old girl presenting with small-bowel obstruction secondary to synchronous trichobezoars in the stomach and ileum. The cas…

Cryptosporidiosis, a protozoal disease which causes significant morbidity in humans, is one of the chief causes of diarrhoea in neonatal ruminants. Although the parasite poses a significant threat to public health and animal health in Ireland, its epidemiology on the island is only poorly understood. Environmental studies have shown the waterborne parasite to be widespread in some untreated waterbodies around Ireland. The island's hydrogeological situation, combined with high stocking rates of livestock and the absence of filtration from regular water treatment, render it vulnerable to large-s…

Q fever is a widespread zoonosis caused by the Gram-negative bacterium Coxiella burnetii. Aborting domestic ruminants are the main sources of human infection but the reservoir of infection is extremely wide. In humans, Q fever may occur as acute pneumonia, hepatitis or flu-like illness or may take a severe chronic form, characterized by endocarditis, chronic hepatitis and chronic fatigue syndrome. In animals, the main clinical manifestation is late abortion. Infection with C. burnetii can be diagnosed using cultural, serological and genetic methods but because the organism is potentially dange…

Q fever, a zoonosis acquired by inhalation of the rickettsia Coxiella burnetii, is rarely diagnosed in Canada. The world incidence has been increasing since 1960, because of progressive dissemination of this microorganism in animal populations, particularly domestic ruminants. Some recent outbreaks were caused by cats. Of 14 cases reported in Quebec between 1989 and the beginning of 1993, nine occurred successively in an 18-month period in the rural region surrounding Trois-Rivières, after contact with livestock or cats. These cases are reported here, with the results of serological screening …

Decades of surveying helminthic diseases in domestic and free-living ruminants in the CSR evidenced extensive infestation by lungworms, gastrointestinal nematodes, and liver flukes. In some years, parasitic invasion caused up to 50% of total losses of roe deer. Programmes to control systematically dictyocaulosis and fascioliasis were carried out with cattle and sheep in 1970-1980, with deer in 1981-1985. In the eighties, the incidence of F. hepatica in cattle and sheep dropped to less than 1%, of D. viviparus in cattle to 0.2%; no D. filaria is to be encountered in sheep presently. The share o…
