Social support and self-efficacy multiply mediate the relationship between medical coping style and resilience in patients with type A aortic dissection.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown that medical coping modes are associated with resilience in cardiovascular disease patients. However, postoperatively, the mechanism underlying this association in Stanford type A aortic dissection patients is poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the mediating effects of social support and self-efficacy on the relationship between medical coping modes and resilience in Stanford type A aortic dissection patients postoperatively. METHODS: We assessed 125 patients after surgery for Stanford type A aortic dissection using the Medical Copin

Describing the acceptability and use of an opioid stewardship self-assessment tool in real-world settings.

BACKGROUND: The Stewardship Framework (Framework) was developed by an expert clinician group and was designed to provide a mechanism for continuous monitoring of improvement in opioid prescribing in acute hospitals. The aim of this study was to modify the Framework into an Opioid Stewardship Self-Assessment Tool (Self-Assessment Tool), and pilot test the acceptability and its use in a variety of acute hospital settings. METHODS: The Framework was converted into the Self-Assessment Tool to allow hospitals to undertake a gap analysis of their current opioid stewardship activities. To participat

Child sleep problems, maternal sleep and self-efficacy: Sleep's complicated role in maternal depression.

Depression, poor sleep duration and low self-efficacy are common in mothers of children with sleep problems. However, research rarely extends beyond the postpartum period. This study investigated the multifaceted relationship between child sleep and maternal depression in early motherhood. A confidential survey assessed child sleep problems, maternal sleep duration, parental self-efficacy and depressive symptoms in 477 Australian mothers of children aged 3 months to 5 years. We found no relationship between child age and maternal depression, supporting our decision to look beyond postpartum de

The incremental validity of average states: A replication and extension of Finnigan and Vazire (2018).

States refer to our momentary thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Average states (aggregates across multiple time points) are discussed as a more accurate and objective measure of personality compared to global self-reports since they do not only rely on people's general beliefs about themselves. Specifically, Finnigan and Vazire (2018) argued that, if average states better capture what a person is actually like, this should be reflected in their unique association with informant-reports of personality, and tested this idea based on two experience-sampling studies. Their results showed, however

Factors associated with self-assessed asthma severity.

BACKGROUND: Asthma severity can be estimated as the level of medication needed to achieve asthma control or by the patient's subjective assessment. Factors associated with self-assessed asthma severity are still incompletely explored. AIM: The aim was to study factors associated with self-assessed moderate or severe asthma. METHOD: In total, 1828 randomly selected asthma patients from primary (69%) and secondary (31%) care, completed a questionnaire including items about patient characteristics, comorbidity, the Asthma Control Test (ACT), emergency care visits and a scale for self-assessed a

Effect of chemogenetic inhibition of lateral habenula neuronal activity on cocaine- and food-seeking behaviors in the rat.

A major problem in the treatment of cocaine addiction is high rates of relapse. Relapse is often provoked by acute reexposure to cocaine-associated cues or to cocaine itself. The lateral habenula (LHb), an epithalamic nucleus, regulates midbrain dopaminergic systems that are known to be involved in cocaine taking and seeking behaviors. However, the role of this nucleus in cocaine self-administration and reinstatement of cocaine seeking has not been entirely parsed out. We used an operant self-administration and reinstatement procedure to explore the effect of Designer Receptors Exclusively Act

Generalized Self-Efficacy, Dispositional Optimism, and Illness Acceptance in Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common chronic endocrinopathies affecting between 5 and 10% of reproductive age women. A diagnosis of PCOS very often causes a deterioration in the woman's self-esteem and self-image, and consequently her quality of life (QoL). The purpose of the study was to investigate generalized self-efficacy, dispositional optimism and acceptance of illness in women with PCOS and to explore factors that affect these variables. The study was performed between January and November 2016 among women with PCOS using health care services. The study used a diag

Discrepancies in Race and Ethnicity Documentation: a Potential Barrier in Identifying Racial and Ethnic Disparities.

BACKGROUND: Data collection on race and ethnicity is critical in the assessment of racial disparities related to health. Studies comparing clinical and administrative data show discrepancies in race documentation and attribution. METHODS: Self-reported data from two studies were compared to demographics in the electronic health record (EHR) extracted from the Biomedical Translational Research Information System (BTRIS) repository. McNemar and Bhapkar analyses were conducted to quantify the agreement of ethnicity and race between self-reported and EHR data. Pearson's chi-square tests were used

Ultrasonic vocalization in rats self-administering heroin and cocaine in different settings: evidence of substance-specific interactions between drug and setting.

RATIONALE: Clinical and preclinical evidence indicates that the setting of drug use affects drug reward in a substance-specific manner. Heroin and cocaine co-abusers, for example, indicated distinct settings for the two drugs: heroin being used preferentially at home and cocaine preferentially outside the home. Similar results were obtained in rats that were given the opportunity to self-administer intravenously both heroin and cocaine. OBJECTIVES: The goal of the present study was to investigate the possibility that the positive affective state induced by cocaine is enhanced when the drug is

Fear of negative evaluation biases social evaluation inference: evidence from a probabilistic learning task.

BACKGROUND: Fear of negative evaluation (FNE) defines social anxiety yet the process of inferring social evaluation, and its potential role in maintaining social anxiety, is poorly understood. We developed an instrumental learning task to model social evaluation learning, predicting that FNE would specifically bias learning about the self but not others. METHODS: During six test blocks (3 self-referential, 3 other-referential), participants (n = 100) met six personas and selected a word from a positive/negative pair to finish their social evaluation sentences "I think [you are / George is]…".

Avatar's neurobiological traces in the self-concept of massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) addicts.

Psychometric studies suggest that observed self-concept deficits in addicted massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) are compensated through the replacement of their ideal (i.e., how an individual would like to be) by their own avatar (i.e., graphical agent in the virtual world). Neurobiological studies indicate that increased identification with their own avatar in regular MMORPG gamers is possibly reflected by enhanced avatar-referential brain activation in the left angular gyrus (AG). However, the neurobiological correlates reflecting the relations of the avatar to addicted

[Perception of parental attitudes and the level of female adolescents' self-esteem affected with anorexia nervosa].

AIM: The article's aim is to look for correlation between a parent - child relationship and the level of self-esteem in the perception of girls affected with anorexia nervosa (who meet the criteria of DSM-IV-TR). The differences in the perception of parental attitudes (of mothers and fathers) and self-esteem of girls suffering from anorexia nervosa and their healthy peers were also analyzed. METHOD: Two equally numbered groups of girls: the clinical group (30 persons affected with anorexia nervosa) and control group (30 healthy girls) in the 15-20 age range were examined. Two test were applie

Psychosocial aspects of coeliac disease: a cross-sectional survey of a UK population.

OBJECTIVES: Coeliac disease (CD) is an autoimmune condition managed by a lifelong therapeutic gluten-free diet. Previous research suggests that the chronicity of CD, the limitations imposed by the gluten-free diet, and the risk of other associated diseases can have a negative impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and psychological well-being. The aim of this study was to explore the illness perceptions and self-efficacy beliefs of adults with CD in the United Kingdom and to report their subjective levels of HRQoL and psychological well-being. DESIGN: The study employed a cross-sect

Abnormality in the self-monitoring mechanism in patients with fibromyalgia and somatoform pain disorder.

BACKGROUND: Auditory hallucinations and passivity experiences are associated with an abnormality in the self-monitoring mechanism that normally allows us to distinguish self-produced from externally produced sensations. It is unclear if chronic central pain disorders such as fibromyalgia and somatoform pain disorders also involve a defect of the self-monitoring mechanism. METHODS: Responses to tactile stimulation were assessed in four groups of subjects (N = 40): patients with fibromyalgia, patients with somatoform pain disorder, patients with schizophrenia with auditory hallucinations and/or

Daily life experiences of cognitive changes in community-dwelling older adults with subjective cognitive decline: A qualitative study.

BackgroundSubjective cognitive decline (SCD), defined as self-perceived cognitive worsening despite normal performance on standardized tests, is increasingly recognized as a potential early indicator of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Older adults with SCD face elevated dementia risk and may benefit from timely intervention or support. To guide such efforts, qualitative research is needed to understand how they experience and perceive cognitive changes in daily life.ObjectiveThis study aims to explore the daily life experiences of community-dwelling older adults with SCD, including
