Dynamic changes in seizure state and anxiety-like behaviors during pentylenetetrazole kindling in rats.

INTRODUCTION: Excessive anxiety is a mental disorder, and its treatment involves the use of benzodiazepines, a class of drugs that enhance t … ke behaviors were investigated using the open-field, light/dark transition, elevated plus maze, and social interaction tests. RESULTS: Bimodal changes in seizure stage were observed in response to PTZ kindling. The increase in the seizure stage was transiently suppressed after 10 injections, and this decrease in epileptic sensitivity disappeared after 20 injections …

Selective filtering of excitatory inputs to nucleus accumbens by dopamine and serotonin.

The detailed mechanisms by which dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5-HT) act in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) to influence motivated behaviors in distinct ways remain largely unknown. Here, we examined whether DA and 5-HT selectively modulate excitatory synaptic transmission in NAc medium spiny neurons in an input-specific manner. DA reduced excitatory postsynaptic currents (EPSCs) generated by paraventricular thalamus (PVT) inputs but not by ventral hippocampus (vHip), basolateral amygdala (BLA), or medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) inputs. In contrast, 5-HT reduced EPSCs generated by inputs from all

Honey bee virus causes context-dependent changes in host social behavior.

Anthropogenic changes create evolutionarily novel environments that present opportunities for emerging diseases, potentially changing the balance between host and pathogen. Honey bees provide essential pollination services, but intensification and globalization of honey bee management has coincided with increased pathogen pressure, primarily due to a parasitic mite/virus complex. Here, we investigated how honey bee individual and group phenotypes are altered by a virus of concern, Israeli acute paralysis virus (IAPV). Using automated and manual behavioral monitoring of IAPV-inoculated individu

Kamishoyosan reduces conditioned fear-induced freezing behavior in socially isolated ovariectomized rats.

In the present study, we investigated the effect of kamishoyosan (KSS) on conditioned fear-induced freezing in ovariectomized (OVX) rats. Socially isolated OVX rats showed the longest freezing time among the following four groups: group-housed sham-operated (Sham), isolated Sham, group-housed OVX, and isolated OVX rats. Repeated oral administration of KSS (30-300 mg/kg) reduced conditioned fear-induced freezing in socially isolated OVX rats. The reduction of freezing by KSS was reversed by flumazenil (3 mg/kg) and bicuculline (3 mg/kg). These findings suggest that the GABAA-benzodiazepine rece

GRIN2B predicts attention problems among disadvantaged children.

It is well established that adversities and GRIN2B (coding an N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor subunit) are independently associated with behavioral and cognitive impairments in childhood. However, a high proportion of children exposed to adversities have good, long-term outcomes. We hypothesized that among children exposed to adversities, GRIN2B variants would predict the worst cognitive and behavioral outcomes. 6 single nucleotide polymorphisms of GRIN2B were genotyped in 625 children aged 6-11 years from an Italian community-based sample. The interacting effect of GRIN2B variants with 4 measur

Behavioural dominance and Taenia crassiceps parasitism in BALB/c male mice.

Behavioural dominance relationships in mouse populations are based upon fighting and antagonistic behaviour. Social rank is affected by the physiological states present in the mice. Experimental infection by Taenia crassiceps cysticerci induced physiological disorders and disrupted the dominant-subordinate status. Infected male mice showed strong perturbations in territorial behaviour and aggressiveness. Infected dominant male mice did not show a significant reversal of dominance order compared to uninfected mice. In addition, during confrontation between naive infected and healthy mice, infec

A framework for analyzing the "choreomusical" relationship between dance and music.

Dance and music are foundational human behaviors that likely co-evolved as intertwined modes of social communication, artistic expression, and collective coordination. Despite their intertwined nature, dance and music are typically analyzed in isolation from one another, both in research studies and in applied settings. I present here a proposal for a general framework for conceptualizing the cross-modal relationship between dance and music. This framework is called SpREE and is based on the analysis of four key dimensions relating dance and music: Space, Rhythm, Entrainment, and Expression. S

Thyroid Gland Disorders and Physical Activity: Can They Affect Each Other?

Physical activity (PA) plays a crucial role in promoting emotional well-being, quality of life, and social interaction. Thyroid dysfunction can significantly affect the ability to engage in PA. This review aims to explore the relationship between thyroid disorders and PA. A comprehensive review of the international literature was conducted, including 24 scientific studies that investigated the effects of thyroid dysfunction on exercise in both human and animal models, with and without thyroidectomy. The findings indicate that thyroid disorders are associated with a variety of conditions, inclu…

Group 2 innate lymphoid cells promote inhibitory synapse development and social behavior.

The innate immune system shapes brain development and is implicated in neurodevelopmental diseases. It is critical to define the relevant im … ent to increase inhibitory synapses. Loss of this signaling pathway led to selective impairments in social interaction. These data define a type 2 neuroimmune circuit in early life that shapes inhibitory synapse development and behavior.

Heterozygous Cc2d1a mice show sex-dependent changes in the Beclin-1/p62 ratio with impaired prefrontal cortex and hippocampal autophagy.

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are a group of neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by repetitive behaviors, lack of social interaction and communication. CC2D1A is identified in patients as an autism risk gene. Recently, we suggested that heterozygous Cc2d1a mice exhibit impaired autophagy in the hippocampus. We now report the analysis of autophagy markers (Lc3, Beclin and p62) in different regions hippocampus, prefrontal cortex, hypothalamus and cerebellum, with an overall decrease in autophagy and changes in Beclin-1/p62 ratio in the hippocampus. We observed sex-dependent variations i…

Orofacial Clefts: Genetics of Cleft Lip and Palate.

Orofacial clefting is considered one of the commonest birth defects worldwide. It presents as cleft lip only, isolated cleft palate or cleft lip and palate. The condition has a diverse genetic background influenced by gene-gene and gene-environment interaction, resulting in two main types, syndromic and nonsyndromic orofacial clefts. Orofacial clefts lead to significant physiological difficulties that affect feeding, speech and language development and other developmental aspects, which results in an increased social and financial burden on the affected individuals and their families. The mana

Potassium channels and autism spectrum disorder: An overview.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) comprises a group of neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviors, interests, or activities. It had been demonstrated that potassium channels played a key role in regulating neuronal excitability, which was closely associated with neurological diseases including epilepsy, ataxia, myoclonus, and psychiatric disorders. In recent years, a growing body of evidence from whole-genome sequencing and whole-exome sequencing had identified several ASD susceptibility genes of po…

Abnormalities of synaptic mitochondria in autism spectrum disorder and related neurodevelopmental disorders.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition primarily characterized by an impairment of social interaction combined with the occurrence of repetitive behaviors. ASD starts in childhood and prevails across the lifespan. The variability of its clinical presentation renders early diagnosis difficult. Mutations in synaptic genes and alterations of mitochondrial functions are considered important underlying pathogenic factors, but it is obvious that we are far from a comprehensive understanding of ASD pathophysiology. At the synapse, mitochondria perform diverse functions, whic…

The Care of Patients With Complex Mood Disorders.

This article focuses on some common dilemmas facing clinicians, patients, and families in managing the treatment of complicated mood disorders. Specifically, this article reviews the interaction of depressive states, including unipolar, bipolar, and mixed, with other adversities, including comorbid physical and psychological disorders, personality vulnerabilities, misuse of drugs and alcohol, and social and family problems. These issues are not always clearly differentiated from the depressive illness. Each of these adversities can worsen an existing mood disorder and influence the patient's r

Exploring Social Biomarkers in High-Functioning Adults with Autism and Asperger's Versus Healthy Controls: A Cross-Sectional Analysis.

Biomarkers for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are lacking but would facilitate drug development for the core deficits of the disorder. We evaluated markers proposed for characterization of differences in social communication and interaction in adults with ASD versus healthy controls (HC) for utility as biomarkers. Data pooled from an observational study and baseline data from a placebo-controlled study were analyzed. Between-group differences were observed in eye-tracking tasks for activity monitoring, biomotion, human activity preference, composite score (p = 0.0001-0.037) and pupillometry (v

[Genetic findings in autism spectrum disorders].

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are pervasive developmental disorders comprising problems in social interaction, communication, and stereotyped behavior and interests. They show a prevalence of around 0.8% in children, adolescents, and adults, and a skewed sex distribution (about 4:1 = male:female). ASD are predominantly genetically determined disorders. Heritability estimates from twin studies range between 64 and 91%. Recurrence risk in siblings is 20-fold elevated. De novo and inherited monogenetic disorders, mutations, sex chromosomal abnormalities, cytogenetic and imprinting disorders as …

[The Importance of Vagus Nerve Afferent in the Formation of Emotions in Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Model Rat].

It is of interest to know how environmental stimuli contribute to the formation of emotion during development. In a rat model of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, monosodium L- glutamate (MSG), a taste substance of umami, was administered for 5 weeks during developmental period, followed by emotional behavior tests such as open-field test and social interaction test in adulthood. Although no significant change was observed in anxiety-like behavior, MSG intake caused a reduction in aggressive behavior. Vagotomy under the level of diaphragm resulted in eliminating the MSG effect on aggre…
