Stakeholder perspectives of a food redistribution supply chain program to reduce food waste and improve food access for disadvantaged populations in Western Switzerland.

OBJECTIVE: Food waste is a major problem that contributes to climate change, while inequities in access to healthy food persist among socially vulnerable populations. Surplus food redistribution initiatives operate at the intersection of waste reduction and efforts to support food access. Our objective was to explore and better understand the perspectives and experiences of organizational stakeholders within the food redistribution system in the Canton of Vaud, Switzerland. DESIGN: We conducted a qualitative descriptive study using semi-structured qualitative interviews, as well as field obse

Barriers to and facilitators of maintaining physical activity for people with hip and knee osteoarthritis: a mixed-methods systematic review.

Increasing physical activity (PA) is an important recommendation for the management of hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA), under which components of therapeutic exercise can be embedded. However, maintaining PA behaviour (≥ 6-months) following the cessation of structured exercise interventions remains challenging and under-explored. This mixed-methods systematic literature review aimed to identify the barriers to and facilitators of maintaining PA behaviour for those living with hip and/or knee OA. Electronic databases were searched for peer-reviewed studies examining PA behaviour maintenance (d

Impact of hearing aid usage on the quality of life of the older adult in KwaZulu-Natal.

BACKGROUND: Despite the benefits of hearing aids for patients experiencing presbycusis, their adoption and consistent use in this population remain low. OBJECTIVES: This study explores older adults' experiences with hearing aid use to better understand its perceived impact on the quality of life (QoL) and factors contributing to inconsistent use. METHOD: Adopting a phenomenological approach, semi-structured, in-person interviews were conducted with eight current hearing aid users, aged 67-84 years, presenting with varying degrees of hearing loss. Data were analysed using inductive thematic a

Malaria elimination practices in China from the perspective of health system and social development.

BACKGROUND: China, once a malaria-endemic country, has developed a comprehensive set of extensive strategies and accumulated practical experience over 70 years of malaria elimination efforts. On June 30, 2021, China was officially certified by the World Health Organization as malaria-free. Substantial research has already summarized China's malaria control experience from a technical standpoint. This study aims to examine China's malaria elimination practices from a new perspective of the health system and social development. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with key informa

Early life predictors of subjective cognitive function in older age: Emerging longitudinal associations over six decades.

OBJECTIVES: Self-rated memory impairment is common in older age and has been related to objective cognitive decline and dementia. Recently, there has been growing interest in early-life predictors of late-life cognition, but research has been limited due to the absence of data spanning the entire lifespan. The present study investigated whether psychological health, social well-being, socioeconomic status (SES), and cognitive abilities at age 10 and 13 predicted subjective memory almost six decades later. METHODS: Psychological health, social well-being, SES, and cognitive abilities were meas

Connected and confined: memories of digital experiences in relation to autonomy, competence, and relatedness during the COVID-19 pandemic.

UNLABELLED: The COVID-19 pandemic drove rapid digital transformation and disrupted the ways people could meet their basic psychological needs of autonomy, relatedness and competence. This study explored how people across six European countries (the UK, Poland, Czechia, Germany, Switzerland and Spain) recalled the role of digital technology (DT) in fulfilling these needs. 148 semi-structured interviews were conducted after the pandemic and were analysed using thematic analysis. The analysis showed that DTs were recalled as both supporting and frustrating the satisfaction of all three psychologi

Capacity to address determinants of health among a social justice coalition in the United States.

This study describes the Arkansas Social Justice Coalition and early pre-post changes in the capacity of participating community-based organizations to address social and structural determinants of health during the formative stage of this coalition. We utilized population-level data to understand the coalition's reach to counties experiencing health inequities. Community-based organizations (N = 29) involved in this coalition all served rural counties and counties with greater burden from COVID-19 hospitalizations, heart disease mortality, and cancer mortality. Food quality and access, econom

Central nervous system control of breathing in natural conversation turn-taking.

Conversations-hallmarks of human social interaction-rely on a deeply rooted evolutionary tool: vocalization. Vocalization productions begin with an airflow from the lungs, shaped by the vocal folds and articulators of the mouth to generate a rich variety of sounds. Speech production therefore involves tight synchronisation between respiratory and articulatory events, especially in natural social interactions. During conversations, turn-taking indeed implies respiration anticipation: lungs must be filled with enough air to produce the next speech segment. Here, we use an fMRI corpus of live, un

Social and Psychological Mediators of Sexual and Physical Male-Perpetrated Intimate Partner Violence Against Young African American Women: The Role of Alcohol Use and Drinking Context.

Problem alcohol use is prevalent among women who experience male-perpetrated intimate partner violence (IPV). However, the pathways by which this occurs remain poorly understood and understudied among African American women. This study sought to examine context-specific social and psychological mediators of this association. Using structural equation modeling (SEM), we tested a conceptual framework predicting problem alcohol use within 3 months of experiencing physical and/or sexual IPV. The sample included 508 young African American women (median age 21, interquartile range 19-22 years). A mo

Therefore, this study examined the reasons for developing AUD and its effect on the daily lives of ethnic minority young adults. METHOD: A descriptive phenomenological study was conducted from March 1 to June 30, 2023. Participants were recruited through referral using the exponential snowball sampling technique. A total of 22 ethnic minority young adults were interviewed using

The limited involvement of health care and social service professionals further restricts these individuals' access to adequate care. This article offers a novel analytical perspective by examining the experiences, motivations, and perceived enablers highlighted by professionals in the medical and social fields who are actively engaged in supporting the health care of trans people. METHODS: Thirteen professionals took part in the study t
