Survival of patients with lung cancer is approximately 12%, largely because the disease is not detected until it has reached an advanced stage. Past screening trials using chest X-ray and sputum cytology were unable to demonstrate a decrease in lung cancer mortality in the screened population. Recent reports document the ability of low-dose spiral CT scans to detect lung cancer at an earlier stage (nodules as small as 5 mm versus 10 mm for chest X-ray). METHODS: The complete nuclear ribosomal DNA second internal transcribed spacer (ITS2) gene sequence of eggs in sputum from a paragonimiasis patient was obtained by directly auto-sequencing its PCR product. ITS2 genes from eggs of Paragonimus westermani and Pagumogonimus skrjabini (both from animal hosts) were also sequenced for comparison. METHODS: 31 cases of pulmonary damage caused by scrub typhus from 1993 to 1998 were reviewed with chest radiographs, chest B-ultrasound, etc.
