Long-lasting memory abnormalities following exposure to the mouse defense test battery: An animal model of PTSD.

Memory dysfunctions are thought to play a crucial role both in the development and the maintenance of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Patients suffering from this condition persistently re-experience the traumatic event particularly when exposed to trauma-related cues and they display memory alterations. The objective of the present study was to investigate the long-term effects of a traumatic stress exposure on defensive behaviors and memory performance in mice confronted with a natural threat (i.e. a rat) in the defense test battery (MDTB), a procedure developed by the Blanchard group

Sensory sensitivity as a link between concussive traumatic brain injury and PTSD.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the most common injuries to military personnel, a population often exposed to stressful stimuli and emotional trauma. Changes in sensory processing after TBI might contribute to TBI-post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) comorbidity. Combining an animal model of TBI with an animal model of emotional trauma, we reveal an interaction between auditory sensitivity after TBI and fear conditioning where 75 dB white noise alone evokes a phonophobia-like phenotype and when paired with footshocks, fear is robustly enhanced. TBI reduced neuronal activity in the hipp

Casualties of the Global War on Terror and their future impact on health care and society: a looming public health crisis.

This article is a primer to understand the medical advances and the future health care consequences of the current conflicts in the Middle East and Southwest Asia, known as the Global War on Terror. There have been significant advances in health care learned in caring for those injured by the conflict--often a polytrauma blast victim, but there are also very high incidence rates of the hidden injuries of war--traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, suicide, and depression. These lead to disruptive behaviors, homelessness, and family violence. Global War on Terror returnees are

The effects of rumination on mood and intrusive memories after exposure to traumatic material: An experimental study.

Correlational studies have shown that trauma-related rumination predicts chronic post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study aimed to experimentally test the hypothesis that rumination is causally involved in the development and maintenance of PTSD symptoms. A video depicting the aftermath of serious road traffic accidents was used as an analogue stressor. After having watched the video, N=101 healthy participants were randomly assigned to a guided thinking task designed to induce (a) rumination, (b) memory integration and (c) distraction. In line with the hypotheses, rumination led to l

The anniversary of birth trauma: failure to rescue.

BACKGROUND: The reported prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder secondary to birth trauma ranges from 1.5% to 5.6%. Serious ramifications of birth trauma are beginning to be recognized, such as impaired mother-infant interaction. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the essence of mothers' experiences regarding the anniversary of their birth trauma. METHODS: Colaizzi's method of phenomenology was used to guide the study. Participants were recruited via the Internet through a charitable trust located in New Zealand called Trauma and Birth Stress. Thirty-seven women sent atta

A case for establishing complicated grief as a distinct mental disorder in DSM-V.

In this paper, we contend that complicated grief (CG) constitutes a distinct psychopathological diagnostic entity and thus warrants a place in standardized psychiatric diagnostic taxonomies. CG is characterized by a unique pattern of symptoms following bereavement that are typically slow to resolve and can persist for years if left untreated. This paper will demonstrate that existing diagnoses are not sufficient, as the phenomenology, risk factors, clinical correlates, course, and outcomes for CG are distinct from those of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder (MDD),

Clinical trials of N-acetylcysteine in psychiatry and neurology: A systematic review.

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is recognized for its role in acetaminophen overdose and as a mucolytic. Over the past decade, there has been growing evidence for the use of NAC in treating psychiatric and neurological disorders, considering its role in attenuating pathophysiological processes associated with these disorders, including oxidative stress, apoptosis, mitochondrial dysfunction, neuroinflammation and glutamate and dopamine dysregulation. In this systematic review we find favorable evidence for the use of NAC in several psychiatric and neurological disorders, particularly autism, Alzheimer's

Serotonin and anxiety: current models.

Evidence for the importance of the serotonin system in anxiety disorders has increased substantially in recent years. Although preclinical research has provided an important source of hypotheses, clinical work on the value of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in these conditions has been particularly persuasive. In this paper, a number of models of serotonin in the anxiety disorders are reviewed, and the clinical advantages of the SSRIs in anxiety disorders are emphasized. Models of serotonin in anxiety disorders include: 1) a 'see-saw model'; 2) an 'amygdala model'; and 3) a 'ba

Lifetime Adversity Among Individuals With Early Phase Psychosis and Comorbid Substance Misuse.

BACKGROUND: Adverse events and substance misuse are rarely examined together among people in early phase psychosis, although both are frequently examined in isolation given their high prevalence in this population. As a result, the frequency of the three-way overlap is unclear. Moreover, adverse events are often limited to childhood abuse and rarely include illness-related events (e.g., threatening hallucinations). This study aims to explore the overlap between these variables and provide a more detailed understanding of adversity in this population and their desire to disclose experiences. M

Prevalence, Correlates, and Psychiatric Burden of Prolonged Grief Disorder in U.S. Military Veterans: Results From a Nationally Representative Study.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the point prevalence and correlates of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) in a nationally-representative sample of United States (U.S.) veterans. METHODS: Data were analyzed from the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study, a nationally representative study of 2,441 U.S. veterans. RESULTS: A total of 158 (weighted 7.3%) veterans screened positive for PGD. The strongest correlates of PGD were adverse childhood experiences, female sex, non-natural causes of death, knowing someone who died from coronavirus disease 2019, and number of close losses. After adjusting for

Tobacco and Illicit Drug Use and Drug Use Disorders Among Employees of Businesses Affected by the 9/11 Attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City.

OBJECTIVE: To study the New York City area population after the September 11, 2001, 9/11 attacks, focusing on tobacco and drug use and drug use disorders. An abundance of research has identified the important mental health sequelae stemming from exposure to disasters, especially vulnerability to the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). There also is a body of literature on the association of disaster exposure with alcohol use/misuse, but far less research on tobacco and other drug use/disorders. METHODS: A terrorism-affected sample (N = 379)

Psychopathology and HIV diagnosis among older adults in the United States: disparities by age, sex, and race/ethnicity.

In 2016, 17% of new HIV infections in the US were among adults aged 50 and older. Differences by age, sex, and race/ethnicity exist among older people living with HIV. Co-morbid mental health and substance use disorders (SUD) are also major challenges for this population. This study examined the association between generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), SUD, depression, and HIV diagnosis among adults aged 50 and older, and the disparities by age, sex, and race/ethnicity. Data were obtained from Cerner Corporation's Health Facts® database. Multivariable logist

[A new essence or just new names?].

Some new terms and meanings in modern psychiatry ("emotional burnout syndrome", "chronic fatigue syndrome", "panic attacks", etc.) were analyzed, due to save clinic psychiatry traditions and succession of different generations of psychiatrists. Comparison of their content and well-known science concepts proves absence of any unknown phenomenon. These terms do not introduce some new items of classic determination of psychopathology catastasis, they just rename it. The reasons of this tendency were investigated.

Is selective mutism an anxiety disorder? Rethinking its DSM-IV classification.

The relationship between selective mutism (SM) and childhood anxiety disorders is illustrated through an examination of their temperamental, environmental, and biological etiologies. SM is also explored as a symptom of the specific anxiety disorders of social phobia, separation anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder. The etiology and symptom overlap demonstrates SM as being an anxiety disorder or a variant of a specific anxiety disorder. The conceptualization of SM as an anxiety disorder is helpful in effectively treating afflicted children. There is enough evidence in the current literatu

[Psychological sequelae of accidents. Symptoms are seldom recognized].

OBJECTIVE: To present the problems possibly associated with psychological sequelae of accidents and make proposals for appropriate therapy. MAJOR POINTS: Accidents experienced by the victim as threatening, whether associated with immediate physical or mental impairment or not, often trigger multiple psychological reactions, and may lead to psychological disorders of either a temporary or a permanent nature. Accident-related psychological symptoms or problems are almost regularly overlooked during the acute medical treatment phase. Not until psychological symptoms become evident are psycho-dia
