Surgical correction in orbitotemporal neurofibromatosis with dystopia.

BACKGROUND: Orbitotemporal neurofibromatosis is a challenging disease for orbital surgeons. Ptosis correction may be needed following correc … bone and orbit. A large mass was found in the superior portion of the orbit, protruding towards the temporal lobe, which in turn displaced the orbit downwards. A bicoronary incision and transcranial approach were performed, followed by the excision of the superior orbital space and temporal lobe mass by uncovering certain portions of the frontal, temporal, and …

The relationship between cerebrospinal fluid markers of Alzheimer pathology and positron emission tomography tau imaging.

The two primary molecular pathologies in Alzheimer's disease are amyloid-β plaques and tau-immunoreactive neurofibrillary tangles. Investiga … monstrated markedly increased levels of tau tracer uptake. This elevation was most prominent in the temporal lobe and temporoparietal junction, but extended more broadly into parietal and frontal cortices. In the entire cohort, there were significant relationships among all cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers and tracer uptake, notably for tau-related cerebrospinal …

Temporo-Parieto-Occipital Disconnection by Robot-Assisted Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Guided Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy for Refractory Epilepsy in a Pediatric Patient: Proof-of-Principle Case Report and Surgical Nuances.

OBJECTIVE: Magnetic resonance imaging-guided laser interstitial thermal therapy (MRIgLITT) has been proven safe and effective for the treatment of focal epilepsy of different etiologies. It has also been used to disconnect brain tissue in more extensive or diffuse epilepsy, such as corpus callosotomy and hemispherotomy. METHODS: In this study, we report a case of temporo-parieto-occipital disconnection surgery performed using MRIgLITT assisted by a robotic arm for refractory epilepsy of the posterior quadrant. A highly realistic cadaver simulation was performed before the actual surgery. RES

Posterior quadrant disconnection for sub-hemispheric drug refractory epilepsy.

The posterior quadratic epilepsy (PQE) is a form of a multilobar epilepsy, involving the temporal-parietal and occipital lobes. Basically, epilepsies with localized networks to the posterior temporal, posterior parietal, and occipital lobes can benefit from this type of surgery. Gliosis due to perinatal insult and cortical dysplasis and angiomas in Sturge Weber syndrome involving the PQ have often been cited in the literature as the etiology for PQE. However, before considering surgery, it is important to localize the epileptogenic focus through a complete pre operative work up involving; EEG

Randomized trial of transcranial alternating current stimulation for treatment of auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 30% of patients with schizophrenia experience auditory hallucinations that are refractory to antipsychotic medications. Here, we evaluated the feasibility and efficacy of transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) that we hypothesized would improve auditory hallucination symptoms by enhancing synchronization between the frontal and temporo-parietal areas of the left hemisphere. METHOD: 22 participants were randomized to one of three arms and received twice daily, 20 min sessions of sham, 10 Hz 2 mA peak-to-peak tACS, or 2 mA tDCS over the course of 5 consecu

Reduced neural differentiation between self-referential cognitive and emotional processes in women with borderline personality disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is associated with disturbed emotion regulation. Psychotherapeutic interventions using mindfulness elements have shown effectiveness in reducing clinical symptoms, yet little is known about their underlying neurobiology. In this functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study, 19 female BPD patients and 19 healthy controls were compared during mindful introspection, cognitive self-reflection and a neutral condition. The activation pattern in the right dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (DMPFC) in BPD patients was different from that in healthy subject when d

Differences in Brain Adaptive Functional Reorganization in Right and Left Total Brachial Plexus Injury Patients.

OBJECTIVE: Total brachial plexus avulsion injury (BPAI) results in the total functional loss of the affected limb and induces extensive brain functional reorganization. However, because the dominant hand is responsible for more cognitive-related tasks, injuries on this side induce more adaptive changes in brain function. In this article, we explored the differences in brain functional reorganization after injuries in unilateral BPAI patients. METHODS: We applied resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging scanning to 10 left and 10 right BPAI patients and 20 healthy control subjects.

Increased functional connectivity between dorsal posterior parietal and ventral occipitotemporal cortex during uncertain memory decisions.

Retrieval of episodic memories is a multi-component act that relies on numerous operations ranging from processing the retrieval cue, evaluating retrieved information, and selecting the appropriate response given the demands of the task. Motivated by a rich functional neuroimaging literature, recent theorizing about various computations at retrieval has focused on the role of posterior parietal cortex (PPC). In a potentially promising line of research, recent neuroimaging findings suggest that different subregions of dorsal PPC respond distinctly to different aspects of retrieval decisions, su

Visual hallucinations of autobiographic memory and asomatognosia: a case of epilepsy due to brain cysticercosis.

The current study describes the case of a woman with symptomatic epilepsy due to brain cysticercosis acquired during childhood. During her adolescence, she developed seizures characterized by metamorphopsia, hallucinations of autobiographic memory and, finally, asomatognosia. Magnetic brain imaging showed a calcified lesion in the right occipitotemporal cortex, and positron emission tomography imaging confirmed the presence of interictal hypometabolism in two regions: the right parietal cortex and the right lateral and posterior temporal cortex. We discuss the link between these brain areas an

Neural coding of cooperative vs. affective human interactions: 150 ms to code the action's purpose.

The timing and neural processing of the understanding of social interactions was investigated by presenting scenes in which 2 people performed cooperative or affective actions. While the role of the human mirror neuron system (MNS) in understanding actions and intentions is widely accepted, little is known about the time course within which these aspects of visual information are automatically extracted. Event-Related Potentials were recorded in 35 university students perceiving 260 pictures of cooperative (e.g., 2 people dragging a box) or affective (e.g., 2 people smiling and holding hands)

Eye movement and visual search: are there elementary abnormalities in autism?

Although atypical eye gaze is commonly observed in autism, little is known about underlying oculomotor abnormalities. Our review of visual search and oculomotor systems in the healthy brain suggests that relevant networks may be partially impaired in autism, given regional abnormalities known from neuroimaging. However, direct oculomotor evidence for autism remains limited. This gap is critical since oculomotor abnormalities might play a causal role in functions known to be impaired in autism, such as imitation and joint attention. We integrate our oculomotor review into a developmental approa

A Tc-99m HMPAO SPECT study of regional cerebral blood flow in drug-free schizophrenic patients with deficit and non-deficit syndrome.

Twenty-nine patients with DSM-IV diagnoses of schizophrenia were categorized into deficit syndrome (n=14) and non-deficit syndrome (n=15) subgroups on the basis of the Schedule for the Deficit Syndrome. The patients, who had all been free of antipsychotic medication for at least 3 weeks, and 17 sex- and age-matched normal controls were studied with single-photon emission computed tomography with Tc-99m HMPAO. Age at onset, Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) total scores, BPRS positive symptom subscores and duration of illness were similar between the two schizophrenic subgroups. As expected

Mapping continued brain growth and gray matter density reduction in dorsal frontal cortex: Inverse relationships during postadolescent brain maturation.

Recent in vivo structural imaging studies have shown spatial and temporal patterns of brain maturation between childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood that are generally consistent with postmortem studies of cellular maturational events such as increased myelination and synaptic pruning. In this study, we conducted detailed spatial and temporal analyses of growth and gray matter density at the cortical surface of the brain in a group of 35 normally developing children, adolescents, and young adults. To accomplish this, we used high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging and novel computatio

[Multiband spectral analysis and standardized markers of the slope of pediatric electroencephalograms].

INTRODUCTION: The infantile electroencephalogram has been studied in connection with many cognitive disabilities. Although normal resting infantile bioelectric recordings are known, the cortical distribution of electroencephalographic frequencies during other sensory and/or cognitive mental processes is less well known. OBJECTIVE: Our interest is based on the description of EEGs of a homogeneous sample of healthy children and their relation to intellectual activities. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The sample studied was made up of 13 healthy children with an average age of 9.3 +/- 1.3 years, on whom

Repetition priming and the time course of object recognition: an fMRI study.

We investigated the effects of repetition priming on the time course of recognition in several visual areas of the brain using fMRI. We slowed down recognition by gradually revealing the stimuli, in order to prolong the pre-recognition phase. Activation was lower for primed than for non-primed objects overall in both the occipitotemporal region (OTR) and the intraparietal region (IPR). A difference was found between primed and non-primed objects in the rate of increase of OTR activation. We concluded that the IPR, in addition to the OTR, was affected by repetition priming, and that this effect

Celiac disease and epilepsy in pediatric patients.

Among 783 patients referred to our institute with different types of seizures as presenting symptom, systematic evaluation of antigliadin and antiendomysial antibodies in the serum has identified nine in whom jejunal biopsy has subsequently confirmed the diagnosis of celiac disease (CD). In three of them brain imaging showed the presence of calcified areas in the occipital region. They had complex partial seizures (CPS), associated in two with transient episodes of blindness. In another patient with CPS and generalized tonic-clonic seizures (GTCS) progressive multifocal cerebral calcifications

Expression of muscarinic binding sites in primary human brain tumors.

The expression of muscarinic binding sites was examined in a collection of primary brain tumors of different cellular origins and various degrees of dedifferentiation, as compared to control specimens. Eleven gliogenous tumors were examined, all of which contained substantial amounts of muscarinic binding sites. Most of the other tumor types examined did not display detectable binding of [3H]N-methyl-4-piperidyl benzilate ([3H]4NMPB). Scatchard analysis indicated the existence of homogeneous antagonist sites in both normal forebrain and glioblastoma multiforme, with Kd values of 1.2 nM and 0.9

Localization in transcortical sensory aphasia.

Transcortical sensory aphasia is a syndrome characterized by poor comprehension but excellent repetition. The lesions shown on computed tomography and isotope scans of 15 patients who satisfied the objective criteria based on test scores were studied. The overlap technique showed a unique posterior parieto-occipital location of lesions. The lesions seem to separate into two groups: one is more medial, inferior, and posterior and is clearly in the posterior cerebral artery territory, and the other is relatively more lateral, superior, and anterior and seems to be in a watershed area between mid
