An in vitro comparison of urease-induced encrustation of JJ stents in human urine.

OBJECTIVE: To report the results of a comparative study of in vitro encrustation of five different types of JJ stents in human urine. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Samples of five JJ stents (polyurethane, silicone, Percuflex, C-Flex and hydrogel-coated C-Flex) were immersed for 24 h at 37 degrees C in fresh human urine supplemented with urease, and the surface photographed and dried. The crystals formed on the stents were dissolved in hydrochloric acid and the calcium and magnesium concentrations determined. RESULTS: Large crystals were deposited on the surface of the hydrogel-coated C-Flex stent a

A prospective randomized controlled trial comparing suprapubic with urethral catheterization in rectal surgery.

BACKGROUND: Bladder drainage is necessary for several days following rectal surgery. Urethral catheterization has long been known to be associated with significant morbidity. Therefore a prospective randomized trial was performed to determine if this morbidity could be decreased by suprapubic catheterization. METHODS: One hundred and thirty-seven patients undergoing rectal surgery were prospectively randomized to either suprapubic or urethral catheterization. RESULTS: After exclusions, 108 patients were analysed. Of the 49 patients with suprapubic catheters there was 14% morbidity, and of th

Conventional, continuous, and telemetric monitoring of urodynamic parameters in non-human primates: a comparative study.

A comparison between three different techniques for monitoring urodynamic parameters in non-human primates was conducted in six adult female rhesus monkeys. This study was divided into two phases. In phase I, the animals were studied by conventional and continuous methods. During the study, uroflow and micturition pattern were obtained while the animals housed in a specially designed metabolic cage. Pressure transducers and EMG electrodes were surgically implanted. Then the animals were trained for 6 weeks to sit in a specially designed chair. Upon completion of the training period, continuous

The obstructive effect of a urethral catheter.

PURPOSE: The effect of a urethral catheter on pressure-flow relationships of the urethra has important implications for the practice to this question in the past in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia. We assessed the obstructive effect of an 8 Ch. urethral catheter in men who presented with lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic hyperplasia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: During combined pressure-flow studies 59 men completed 2 voids of similar volume with and without a urethral catheter in situ. Maximum flow rate, detrusor pressure at maximum flow and the group of specific urethral

A pediatric case of ureteropelvic junction obstruction treated with retrograde endopyelotomy.

To determine the feasibility of retrograde endopyelotomy in the management of pediatric ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction, we treated one girl aged 6 years with the Acucise cutting balloon devise for symptomatic UPJ obstruction. The Acucise catheter (7 Fr, flexible) was placed by a cystoscope over a guide wire with fluoroscopic guidance under general anesthesia. After cutting the stenotic area electronically and dilation until 24 Fr for 10 seconds, a 6/10 Fr endopyelotomy ureteral catheter was left in situ for 8 weeks after the operation. Total operating time was 45 minutes and the chil

[The treatment of prostatic adenoma by transurethral microwave therapy].

Patients with adenoma of the prostate appear to benefit from application of the unit "Prostatron" in one session without anesthesiologic maintenance and under outpatient conditions in the absolute majority of cases, as evidenced by reports from abroad and our own experience gained in the treatment of patients with adenoma of the prostate. This permits it to be recommended for widespread use in urological settings. Clinical, uroflowmetric and ultrasonic monitoring of the urogenital system status in patients with adenoma of the prostate, which is to be delivered in all such patients,--if used in

Gynopia in nursing practice: the case of urethral catheterization.

A pilot study of catheterized women was designed to investigate their perceptions of pain and discomfort during the procedure. The study aimed to test the feasibility of conducting a larger randomized controlled trial. Problems were encountered during the execution of the study, due to the need to conform to established principles in clinical research. Restrictions on access to patients impinged upon the opportunity to 'cast the net wide' in order to generate meaningful data.

Intermittent self-catheterisation: research-based practice.

Intermittent self-catheterisation (ISC) is an effective management strategy for people who have urinary retention or postvoid residual due to urethral sphincter or detrusor dysfunction. However, some questions still need to be answered on the details of ISC. This article presents current research findings that may resolve some of the practice issues and suggests that nurses are in a prime position to implement research-based practice.
