The adolescent reward system: Longitudinal brain-behavior dynamics and pandemic effects.

Adolescence is a critical period of brain development characterized by heightened reward sensitivity, which influences behavior and emotional regulation. Major life events, like the COVID-19 pandemic, may affect reward system development. This longitudinal study integrates self-reported Behavioral Activation System (BAS) measures with fMRI data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study® to examine reward processing during versus before the pandemic. 5,405 participants (Mage = 9.92, SD = 0.62) completed the Monetary Incentive Delay task during fMRI scanning and BAS assessments at Ba

Schizophrenia and Neurodevelopment: Insights From Connectome Perspective.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is conceptualized as a brain connectome disorder that can emerge as early as late childhood and adolescence. However, the underlying neurodevelopmental basis remains unclear. Recent interest has grown in children and adolescent patients who experience symptom onset during critical brain development periods. Inspired by advanced methodological theories and large patient cohorts, Chinese researchers have made significant original contributions to understanding altered brain connectome development in early-onset schizophrenia (EOS). STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a search o

Assessing Aspects of Social Relationships in Youth Across Middle Childhood and Adolescence: The NIH Toolbox Pediatric Social Relationship Scales.

OBJECTIVE: Social relationships are a critical context for children's socioemotional development and their quality is closely linked with concurrent and future physical and emotional wellbeing. However, brief self-report measures of social relationship quality that translate across middle childhood, adolescence, and adulthood are lacking, limiting the ability to assess the impact of social relationships on health outcomes over time. To address this gap, this article describes the development and testing of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Toolbox Pediatric Social Relationship Scales, wh

Promoting Participation in Physical Activity in Children and Adolescents With Down Syndrome.

UNLABELLED: Children with Down syndrome (DS) often have lower physical activity (PA) levels compared with their peers with typical development, and face challenges to being physically active such as medical comorbidities, access issues, and societal stigma. Physical therapists are experts in exercise prescription and PA and are thus uniquely qualified to successfully promote participation in children with DS, in spite of inherent challenges. Our perspective is that a shift in physical therapy service delivery is needed. We suggest that physical therapists change the focus of their intervention

A comprehensive questionnaire for the assessment of health-related quality of life in coeliac disease (CDQL).

UNLABELLED: Coeliac disease (CD) is a chronic immune-mediated disease in genetically susceptible individuals, induced by ingested gluten. The treatment for CD is a lifelong gluten-free diet (GFD). The GFD involves restrictions in diet that may impact on a person's Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL). AIM: The aim of the present study was to develop the Coeliac Disease Quality of Life questionnaire (CDQL): a comprehensive CD-specific HRQoL measure that can be completed by children, adolescents, and adults or by proxy. METHODS: The questionnaire was developed in three phases. In phase 1, fo

Biomarkers of Alzheimer disease, insulin resistance, and obesity in childhood.

OBJECTIVE: To answer the question of whether onset of insulin resistance (IR) early in life enhances the risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer disease (AD), serum levels of 2 molecules that are likely associated with development of AD, the amyloid β-protein 42 (Aβ42) and presenilin 1 (PSEN1), were estimated in 101 preschoolers and 309 adolescents of various BMI. METHODS: Participants (215 boys; 48.8%) were normal weight (n = 176; 40%), overweight (n = 135; 30.7%), and obese (n = 129; 29.3%). The HOmeostasis Model of IR (HOMA-IR), HOMA percent β-cell function (HOMA-β) and QUantitative Insu

Local brain connectivity across development in autism spectrum disorder: A cross-sectional investigation.

There is a general consensus that autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is accompanied by alterations in brain connectivity. Much of the neuroimaging work has focused on assessing long-range connectivity disruptions in ASD. However, evidence from both animal models and postmortem examination of the human brain suggests that local connections may also be disrupted in individuals with the disorder. Here, we investigated how regional homogeneity (ReHo), a measure of similarity of a voxel's timeseries to its nearest neighbors, varies across age in individuals with ASD and typically developing (TD) indivi

Community-Based Global Health Program for Maltreated Children and Adolescents in Brazil: The Equilibrium Program.

The maltreatment of children and adolescents is a global public health problem that affects high- and low-middle income countries ("LMICs"). In the United States, around 1.2 million children suffer from abuse, while in LMICs, such as Brazil, these rates are much higher (an estimated 28 million children). Exposition to early environmental stress has been associated with suboptimal physical and brain development, persistent cognitive impairment, and behavioral problems. Studies have reported that children exposed to maltreatment are at high risk of behavioral problems, learning disabilities, com

[Environmental factors and adolescent fears and anxiety].

AIM: The following article aims to show the significant part that the environmental factor plays in developing fears and anxiety in adolescence. Both literature and psychological practice underestimate the role of that factor, emphasising at the same time the influence of sex, age or various types of stimulants causing negative emotional states. METHOD: In order to verify the suggested hypotheses, 540 adolescents in 18 groups of 30 people divided according to sex (270 girls and 270 boys), age (90 individuals of both sex in the following age groups: 12.0-13.0, 15.0-16.0 and 18.0-19.0) originat

[Cognitive remediation therapy for children: literature data and clinical application in a child and adolescent psychiatry department].

The hypothesis of cerebral plasticity in psychiatric disorders has encouraged clinicians to develop cognitive remediation therapy (CRT), a new therapeutic approach based on attention, memory, planning, and mental flexibility tasks. The first cognitive remediation programs were developed and validated for adults with schizophrenia and were shown to have a positive impact on executive functions as well as on quality of life. In children and adolescents, researchers emphasized the existence of executive dysfunction in neurodevelopmental disorders such as autistic spectrum disorder, attention defi

Facilitators and barriers to participation and scale-up of a non-specialist delivered psychological intervention for adolescents in low-resourced settings: a process evaluation.

Globally, the number of refugees and displaced individuals has surpassed 100 million for the first time in history. Refugees are more likely than non-refugee populations to experience psychological distress and develop mental disorders. Early Adolescent Skills for Emotion (EASE), developed by the World Health Organization, is a potentially scalable task-sharing intervention targeting symptoms of internalizing disorders such as depression and anxiety for 10-15 years old and their caregiver. Prior to this study a randomized controlled trial in Amman, Jordan was conducted showing effectiveness of

Interneuron NMDA Receptor Ablation Induces Hippocampus-Prefrontal Cortex Functional Hypoconnectivity after Adolescence in a Mouse Model of Schizophrenia.

Although the etiology of schizophrenia is still unknown, it is accepted to be a neurodevelopmental disorder that results from the interaction of genetic vulnerabilities and environmental insults. Although schizophrenia's pathophysiology is still unclear, postmortem studies point toward a dysfunction of cortical interneurons as a central element. It has been suggested that alterations in parvalbumin-positive interneurons in schizophrenia are the consequence of a deficient signaling through NMDARs. Animal studies demonstrated that early postnatal ablation of the NMDAR in corticolimbic interneuro

Experience-dependent development of vagal circuitry in rodents and humans.

Given clear connections between mental and physical health, the impact of dysfunctional brain-body communication on emotional behavior and psychopathology is garnering increased attention. Vagal circuits comprise a major neural substrate for communication between the brain and peripheral organs, and evidence suggests that these circuits are developmentally plastic and sensitive to stress and other environmental challenges. Here, we review historic and current literature regarding how early life experience shapes the development of vagal circuitry in rodents and in humans. We discuss the anatom

What is the ideal thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) threshold value in congenital hypothyroidism screening? Twin study.

Congenital hypothyroidism is the most common preventable cause of intellectual disability. Therefore, the majority of developed countries have aimed to diagnose cases early through screening programs. In these screening programs, levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine are examined in dried blood spots taken between days 3 and 5 of life. While many countries accept TSH threshold value of 8 mU/L, there is still no consensus on the ideal TSH threshold value. As no twin studies on the TSH threshold value have been conducted previously, this study was planned. Eight pairs of

Associations between food contaminants exposure and pubertal development at 10 and 13 years old.

Endocrine-disrupting compounds, such as acrylamide (AA) and bisphenol A (BPA), are external substances usually found in air, water, food and other consumer products that may influence puberty timing. This study aims to assess the association of AA and BPA, individually and combined, on pubertal development in a sample of children and adolescents aged 4-13. Data from Generation XXI cohort was used (n = 5279). Dietary information was gathered through food diaries. Dietary AA exposure was estimated by merging food consumption with occurrence data from EFSA's publication. BPA exposure was estimate

Multivariate neural signatures of worry become more differentiated across adolescence and young adulthood: An ultra-high field (7T) fMRI study.

Worry is an important contributor to anxiety and depressive disorders, particularly in adolescence. Underlying changes in brain networks are thought to drive development of pathological worry, yet the degree to which neural correlates of worry vary by age is unknown. Here, we use multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) to investigate individual variance in brain activity during worry in a cross-sectional sample of adolescents and adults varying in worry symptoms. Participants (n=69; ages 12-31) completed a personalized worry-induction fMRI task. Brain activity was averaged across k=268 brain regi
