Effect of handheld mobile phone use on parotid gland salivary flow rate and volume.

BACKGROUND: Handheld mobile phones emit nonionizing electromagnetic radiations and generate heat during use which can be absorbed by the adjacent tissues. This study observed functional and volumetric changes in the parotid glands associated with mobile phone use. STUDY DESIGN: Unstimulated parotid salivary flow rate was measured bilaterally in 142 individuals divided into 2 groups of heavy users and control subjects using a modified Schirmer test. Bilateral parotid ultrasonography was performed to evaluate gland volume. Variation and correlation tests were used to statistically analyze the r

Anterograde-retrograde rendezvous approach for radiation-induced complete upper oesophageal sphincter stenosis: case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Strictures of the hypopharynx and oesophagus are frequently observed following (chemo)radiation. Anterograde dilatation of a complete stenosis carries a high risk of perforation. An alternative is described: a combined anterograde-retrograde approach. CASE REPORT: A 75-year-old man developed complete stenosis of the oesophageal inlet after primary radiotherapy for laryngeal carcinoma and full percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy feeding. To prevent creation of a false route into the mediastinum, a dilatation wire was introduced in a retrograde fashion into the oesophagus, through t

Successful pregnancy after radiotherapy with 131I for differentiated thyroid cancer. A case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Radioactive iodine has been used effectively in the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid diseases. Since radiation is delivered to the whole body, including the ovaries, there is reasonable concern as to whether there is a possibility of mutagenic effect on germ cells. CASE REPORT: A 33-year-old woman with a differentiated papillary carcinoma. (T2N0M0), underwent radiotherapy three weeks after surgery and one year afterwards she became pregnant. At the 38th week of gestation she delivered vaginally a healthy female neonate weighing 3100 g. The child at the age of five years is healt

The role of pegvisomant in the treatment of acromegaly.

BACKGROUND: Expert surgery in acromegaly is curative in about only 60% of cases. Postsurgical radiation therapy is associated with a high incidence of hypopituitarism and its effect on growth hormone decrease is slow. Therefore, effective adjuvant medical treatment is mandatory. OBJECTIVE: To delineate the role of pegvisomant in the treatment of acromegaly. METHODS: A search of the Medline, Embase and Web of Science databases for clinical studies on pegvisomant was performed. In addition, abstracts of the major endocrine society meetings in 2007 were searched. RESULTS: When treatment with s

Free flap transfer in cranio-maxillofacial surgery: a review of the current data.

BACKGROUND: The advances of cranio-maxillofacilal surgery are considerably driven by the evolution of microsurgical techniques. At present, these methods continue to provide new therapeutic options to the field. Especially, free flap transfer has evolved to become an integral part of current treatment protocols for head and neck malignancies. It ensures uneventful wound healing even after previous radiotherapy and can often preserve form and function. For many patients, this may lead to a significant improvement in their quality of life. OBJECTIVES: This review summarizes aspects of tumor the

The use of bisphosphonates in patients with breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Bone is the most common site of breast cancer metastases. Skeletal metastases may be associated with harmful and painful events such as fractures, spinal cord compression, and hypercalcemia. By inhibiting osteoclasts and bone resorption, bisphosphonates can interrupt the process of bone destruction and decrease the risk of skeletal complications. METHODS: A review of the literature was undertaken regarding the use of bisphosphonates in breast cancer management, with particular attention to prospective, randomized clinical trials that have influenced the treatment of bone metastase

The evolving role of bisphosphonates.

Bisphosphonates, analogs of pyrophosphate, bind to bone at sites of active bone remodeling. In clinical settings of rapid bone turnover and/or excessive osteolytic activity, they have been shown to have beneficial clinical effects. These settings include Paget's disease of bone, osteoporosis from a variety of clinical causes, and malignant bone disease. Bisphosphonate inhibition of osteolysis in cancer has been shown to be effective therapy for malignancy-associated hypercalcemia and as adjunctive therapy for the delay or prevention of cancer-related skeletal morbidity, including bone pain, pa

Frequency of spontaneous chromosome aberrations in mice: effects of age.

In this paper, we present data on chromosome aberration frequencies in mice which served as unexposed controls in a variety of radiation and chemical toxicology experiments conducted in our laboratory in recent years. All chromosome aberration data were obtained by chromosome painting. In peripheral blood lymphocytes from 102 animals, the frequencies of translocations and insertions increased significantly with age. No increase with age was seen for dicentrics or acentric fragments. When the data were analyzed by strain, the age-related increase in translocation frequencies was observed only i

[Value of imaging techniques in the diagnosis of lumbar intervertebral disk prolapse].

As a seeming law of nature the possibility of making use of various multiplanar sectional imaging techniques is accompanied by diagnostic exaggeration. Simple and cost effective procedures with low radiation dosage such as plain x-rays of the spine are being thrust into the background. Not seldom are patients referred to the spine surgeon with MRI or Cat scan at hand but lacking standard radiographs. As far as the assessment of intervertebral disc disease is concerned the combination of plain X-rays of the spine and computed tomography of the level in question turned out to be sufficient for i

Chromosomal aberrations induced by low-dose gamma-irradiation. Study of R-banded chromosomes of human lymphocytes.

The effect of low-dose (0-0.5 Gy) gamma-radiations was studied on R-banded chromosomes from lymphocytes of healthy donors of various ages. In cells from newborns, an increase of chromosome damage roughly proportional to the dose was found. In lymphocytes from young adults chromosomal aberrations were not detected at doses of 0.05 and 0.1 Gy, and in lymphocytes from old adults chromosomal aberrations were not detected at doses of 0.05 and 0.1 Gy, and in lymphocytes from old adults not even at 0.2 Gy. The difficulty in detecting aberrations in lymphocytes from adults is largely due to a consider

Does Advanced Imaging Have a Role in Detecting Local Recurrence of Soft-tissue Sarcoma?

BACKGROUND: Early detection of soft-tissue sarcoma recurrences may decrease the morbidity of reoperation and improve oncologic outcomes. The benefit of imaging compared with clinical surveillance for detecting local recurrences remains controversial, as prior studies have varied in terms of inclusion criteria, factors analyzed, and outcomes reported. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What proportion of local recurrences were detected by surveillance imaging compared with clinical signs and symptoms? (2) Were local recurrences detected by imaging smaller than those detected by clinical surveillance? (3)
