Neurogenic hypertension. A new MRI protocol for the evaluation of neurovascular compression of the cranial nerves IX and X root-entry zone.

OBJECTIVE: Neurovascular compression of the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of essential hypertension. Although MRI has been widely used to evaluate the morphologic relation of structures in this region, spatial resolution of the previously used techniques was limited. This article describes the use of a new MRI protocol that combines two sequences with improved spatial resolution and complementary image information as well as a set of defined criteria for image analysis. METHODS: MRI of the brain stem was performed in 60 hypertensive and 50 normot…

[Superficial siderosis appeared in a case of suprasellar embryonal carcinoma].

A case of superficial siderosis that appeared in a case of suprasellar embryonal carcinoma is reported. A 24-year-old man presented polydips … ine and adjuvant chemotherapy. During treatment, MRI demonstrated low signals on the surface of the brain stem, suggesting the superficial siderosis. The lesions spread to the surface of the cerebellum and tentorium cerebelli. Superficial siderosis is characterized by the deposition of hemosiderin in the leptomeninges, cranial nerves and spinal cord. The eti …

Experience with cerebellopontine angle epidermoids.

OBJECTIVE: Cerebellopontine angle (CPA) epidermoids, although of benign nature, are of considerable neurosurgical interest because of their close proximity and adherence to the cranial nerves and the brain stem. We describe our experience and attempt to correlate the final outcomes with the extent of surgical removal. METHODS: Twenty-five consecutive patients with CPA epidermoids that were surgically treated were reviewed, and the final outcomes were assessed. RESULTS: Thirteen patients had trigeminal neuralgia. In 7 of the 13 patients, trigeminal neuralgia was the only presenting feature. T…

Outcome of intracerebral hemorrhage: clinical and CT findings in 326 patients.

Clinical symptoms and findings in cranial computed tomography (CT) were evaluated in 326 patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). Localizations of ICH were the lobes (n = 254), the basal ganglia (n = 46), the pons and brain stem (n = 13) and the cerebellum (n = 8). Multiple hematomas were present in nine patients. An initial coma (n = 225) was most frequent in ICH of the pons (n = 7), cerebellum (n = 6), and the frontal (n = 71) and temporal (n = 66) lobes. Epileptic seizures (n = 70) were most common in hematomas of the frontal (n = 24), temporal (n = 19) and parietal (n = 12) lobes and …

[Short-latency somatosensory evoked potentials and magnetic resonance imaging in the medial medullary syndrome].

A 57-year-old woman was admitted to Kakeyu Hospital complaining of paresis of the left upper and lower extremities which suddenly developed … ence of N18 on the affected side. From these SEP findings and the reports on SEPs in lesions of the brain stem or thalamus, it was suggested that P13 is abnormal in lower medullary lesions and is preserved in upper medullary lesions, and that N16 is abnormal in brain stem lesions and is preserved or changed a little in thalamic lesions.

Stereotactic evacuation of hypertensive cerebellar hemorrhage using plasminogen activator.

Treatment for hypertensive cerebellar hemorrhage still remains controversial as to whether direct surgical procedure is indicated or not. This is so even after the introduction of CT scan which easily demonstrates the location and size of the hematoma and the presence of hydrocephalus. In this paper, we present our experience of 20 patients with cerebellar hemorrhage treated by stereotactic evacuation using Komai's CT-stereotactic apparatus. All the patients had vertigo, cerebellar symptoms, dysfunction of brain stem or consciousness disturbance. The hematomas on CT scan were more than 28 mm i…

The mossy fiber projection of the nucleus reticularis tegmenti pontis to the flocculus and adjacent ventral paraflocculus in the cat.

The pontine projection of the flocculus and adjacent ventral paraflocculus was investigated with antegrade and retrograde axonal tracer tech … d in the nodulus. The nucleus reticularis tegmenti pontis does not project to any part of the lower brain stem. The connections described in this paper are discussed in relation to the possible role of the nucleus reticularis tegmenti pontis as a relay nucleus in brain stem pathways transmitting visual information. It is concluded that in the cat this nucleu …

Donor bone marrow-derived macrophage engraftment into the central nervous system of patients following allogeneic transplantation.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is a well-known treatment for hematologic malignancies, wherein nascent stem cells provide regenerating marrow and immunotherapy against the tumor. The progeny of hematopoietic stem cells also populate a wide spectrum of tissues, including the brain, as bone marrow-derived macrophages similar to microglial cells. We developed a sensitive and novel combined immunohistochemistry (IHC) and XY fluorescence in situ hybridization assay to detect, quantify, and characterize donor cells in the cerebral cortices of 19 female patients who underwent allogeneic stem

Neural Stem Cells Derived from Human Parthenogenetic Stem Cells Engraft and Promote Recovery in a Nonhuman Primate Model of Parkinson's Disease.

Cell therapy has attracted considerable interest as a promising therapeutic alternative for patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Clinical studies have shown that grafted fetal neural tissue can achieve considerable biochemical and clinical improvements in PD. However, the source of fetal tissue grafts is limited and ethically controversial. Human parthenogenetic stem cells offer a good alternative because they are derived from unfertilized oocytes without destroying potentially viable human embryos and can be used to generate an unlimited supply of neural cells for transplantation. We have

Stromal-derived factor-1[alpha] correlates with circulating endothelial progenitor cells and with acute lesion volume in stroke patients.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Endothelial progenitor cells (EPC) are important participants of neovascularization and are mobilized through signaling with stromal-derived factor (SDF-1α), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, and stem cell factor. The association between EPC levels and these growth factors (GF) in acute stroke has not been previously established. We aimed to determine the association between EPC and these GF, and to elucidate a relationship between these GF and stroke severity in acute stroke patients. METHODS: Seventeen patients were sel

A cell-free extract from human adipose stem cells protects mice against epilepsy.

PURPOSE: Stem cell-based therapies are being considered for various neurologic diseases, such as epilepsy. Recent studies have suggested that some effects of transplanted stem cells are due to bystander effects that modulate the host environment, rather than direct effects of cell replacement. The extract from human adipose stem cells (ASCs) that secrete multiple growth factors including cytokines and chemokines may be a potential source of bystander effects for the treatment of epilepsy, in which inflammation is thought to play an important role. Here, we investigated the effects of a cytosol

Microanatomical evidences for potential of mesenchymal stem cells in amelioration of striatal degeneration.

Huntington's disease is an inherited neurodegenerative disorder, characterized by loss of spiny neurons in the striatum and cortex, which usually happens in the third or fourth decades of life. In advanced form of the disease, progressive striatum atrophy happens and medium spiny neurons, which occupy more than 80% of the striatum, become atrophic. Gradually, the atrophy expands to the neocortex and other regions of the brain. To our knowledge, there is no effective therapeutic strategy for diminishing the motor disorders of Huntington's disease. In recent years, cellular transplantation has b

Nonlinear feedback model of neuronal populations in hippocampal CAl region.

1. A lumped-circuit model is proposed for the local interactions within the hippocampal CAl region. Each neuronal population is represented by a linear differential equation or a linear transfer function in the Laplace domain. Interactions between neuronal populations are represented by gain factors. Recurrent inhibition of pyramidal cells by the inhibitory interneurons is the important interaction represented by an asymmetric, bidirectionally saturating gain curve. The inputs to the model are orthodromic or antidromic inputs to the pyramidal cells and a tonic input from the brain stem. The ou…

Muscle Microbiopsy to Delineate Stem Cell Involvement in Young Patients: A Novel Approach for Children With Cerebral Palsy.

Cerebral palsy (CP), the single largest cause of childhood physical disability, is characterized firstly by a lesion in the immature brain, and secondly by musculoskeletal problems that progress with age. Previous research reported altered muscle properties, such as reduced volume and satellite cell (SC) numbers and hypertrophic extracellular matrix compared to typically developing (TD) children (>10 years). Unfortunately, data on younger CP patients are scarce and studies on SCs and other muscle stem cells in CP are insufficient or lacking. Therefore, it remains difficult to understand the ea

Nicotinamide alone accelerates the conversion of mouse embryonic stem cells into mature neuronal populations.

INTRODUCTION: Vitamin B3 has been shown to play an important role during embryogenesis. Specifically, there is growing evidence that nicotinamide, the biologically active form of vitamin B3, plays a critical role as a morphogen in the differentiation of stem cells to mature cell phenotypes, including those of the central nervous system (CNS). Detailed knowledge of the action of small molecules during neuronal differentiation is not only critical for uncovering mechanisms underlying lineage-specification, but also to establish more effective differentiation protocols to obtain clinically releva

Stem cell-based interventions for the prevention and treatment of intraventricular haemorrhage and encephalopathy of prematurity in preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Germinal matrix-intraventricular haemorrhage (GMH-IVH) and encephalopathy of prematurity (EoP) remain substantial issues in neonatal intensive care units worldwide. Current therapies to prevent or treat these conditions are limited. Stem cell-based therapies offer a potential therapeutic approach to repair, restore, or regenerate injured brain tissue. These preclinical findings have now culminated in ongoing human neonatal studies. This is an update of the 2019 review, which did not include EoP. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the benefits and harms of stem cell-based interventions for pr
