The relationship between corneal calcareous degeneration and various ophthalmic diseases in dogs: A retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate ocular factors that influence the development of corneal calcareous degeneration (CCD) in dogs. ANIMALS AND PROCEDURES: The medical records of 96 eyes of dogs with CCD and 288 eyes without CCD were retrospectively reviewed. Dogs with evidence of causative systemic illness associated with CCD were excluded from the study. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify the ocular factors associated with the development of CCD. To identify the effect of phosphate-containing eyedrops on CCD, the application periods of phosphate-containing antiglaucoma eyedrops were co

The number of mitochondrial DNA mutations as a genetic feature for hair cycle arrest (alopecia X) in Pomeranian dogs.

BACKGROUND: Hair cycle arrest (HCA) is a noninflammatory alopecic disease affecting various dog breeds, particularly Pomeranian dogs. This disease is probably a hereditary disorder considering the strong breed predisposition. Despite efforts to identify the pathogenesis of this disease, an underlying specific cause is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To identify candidate gene mutations for HCA in Pomeranian dogs. ANIMALS: Four Pomeranian dogs diagnosed with HCA and four unaffected Pomeranian dogs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Whole blood was used for DNA extraction. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was performe

Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis in Salukis is caused by a single base pair insertion in CLN8.

Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs) are heterogenic inherited lysosomal storage diseases that have been described in a number of species including humans, sheep, cattle, cats and a number of different dog breeds, including Salukis. Here we present a novel genetic variant associated with the disease in this particular breed of dog. In a clinical case, a Saluki developed progressive neurological signs, including disorientation, anxiety, difficulties in eating, seizures and loss of vision, and for welfare reasons, was euthanized at 22 months of age. Microscopy showed aggregation of autofluoresc

Acquired Fanconi syndrome in two dogs following long-term consumption of pet jerky treats in Japan: case report.

Renal Fanconi syndrome has recently been associated with the ingestion of pet jerky treats from China in mostly small breed dogs in North America, Australia and Europe. We report here about two dogs with Fanconi syndrome following pet jerky treats exposure in Japan. A mixed-breed dog and a French bulldog showed weight loss, polyuria and polydipsia. For years, the owners had been feeding large quantities of pet jerky treats containing chicken prepared in China. Diagnostics revealed glycosuria without hyperglycemia, severe aminoaciduria, and in one case also ketonuria, hypokalemia and metabolic

Morphologic and Morphometric Description of the Temporomandibular Joint in the Domestic Dog Using Computed Tomography.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in the domestic dog is a synovial joint with 2 articular surfaces, the mandibular fossa of the squamous portion of the temporal bone and the articular head of the condylar process of the mandible. Although different diagnostic imaging techniques have been used to study the TMJ in dogs, morphologic and morphometric studies based on computed tomography (CT) are scarce. The purpose of the present study was to describe the morphologic and morphometric features of the TMJ in domestic dogs using CT. Width and depth of the mandibular fossa and 2 different angles betw

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii (Nicole & Manceaux, 1909) and retroviral status of client-owned pet cats (Felis catus, Linnaeus, 1758) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Cats, as definitive host, play an important role in the transmission of Toxoplasma gondii. This study aimed to establish the seroprevalence of anti-T. gondii immunoglobulins G and M, and determine the frequency of oocysts in the feces of the domestic cat population in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We also aimed to study the association between T. gondii infection and age, sex, breed, lifestyle, diet and retroviral infection. A total of 108 cats were included in the study and fecal samples of 54 of those cats were obtained. Only 5.6% of the cats were seropositive for anti-T. gondii immunoglobulins us

Association between increased behavioral persistence and stereotypy in the pet dog.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether dogs that exhibit stereotypy also show higher behavioral persistence in an extinction-learning task. Thirteen pet dogs with stereotypy and 13 breed-matched control dogs were assessed on a resistance to extinction test. Each dog was trained for 40 trials using a food reinforcer to nose-touch the experimenter's hand on a continuous reinforcement schedule. After acquisition, the dogs entered an extinction phase, during which food was no longer delivered. The numbers of nose-touches as well as inter-response times during this phase were recorded

International perspectives on impacts of reproductive technologies for world food production in Asia associated with poultry production.

Poultry meat and eggs are valuable sources of dietary protein in almost every country in the world. A number of breeding techniques, methods, and technology have been applied to obtain maximum production under different environmental and economic conditions. Indigenous and local breeds share 90 % of the total population of poultry in many developing countries in Asia. However, indigenous chickens are low in productivity. Many studies have found that crossbreeding of exotic with indigenous chickens resulted in birds that performed better, even superior to pure exotic chickens, with respect to b…

Artificial insemination increases the probability of a male calf in dairy and beef cattle.

The objective of this study was to determine if natural mating affected secondary sex ratio. Data consisting of 642,401 calving records from the Irish national database, during the years 2002-2005, were used in the analysis. Factors affecting the logit of the probability of a male calf being born were determined using multiple regression generalised estimating equations with sire of the calf included as a repeated effect. Month of the year at calving, sex of the previous calf born within dam, breed of service sire, parity of dam and type of mating (i.e., natural or artificial insemination) sig

Molecular identification of Anopheles (Cellia) sundaicus from the Andaman and Nicobar islands of India.

Anopheles (Cellia) sundaicus (Rodenwaldt) is an important malaria vector in the Andaman and Nicobar islands of India where it breeds in freshwater as well as in brackish water. To establish the molecular identity of An. sundaicus on these islands we analyzed samples from four geographically isolated areas-Teressa, Nancowry, Car Nicobar and Katchal islands. PCR-amplification and nucleotide sequence analysis were performed for internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) and domain-3 (D3) of 28S rRNA. The ITS2 region of An. sundaicus from all four islands was identical but different from An. sundaicus A

CT myelography of the thoraco-lumbar spine in 8 dogs with degenerative myelopathy.

CT myelography of the T11-L2 region was performed in 8 large-breed dogs with a clinical diagnosis of degenerative myelopathy (DM) and 3 large-breed dogs that were clinically normal. CT myelographic characteristics were recorded for each dog, at each disc level. Area measurements of the spinal cord, dural sac, vertebral canal, and vertebral body were recorded at 4 slice locations for each disc level. Mean area ratios were calculated and graphically compared, by slice location and group. In all dogs, CT myelography identified morphologic abnormalities that were not suspected from conventional my

Canine inherited retinal degenerations: update on molecular genetic research and its clinical application.

Inherited retinal degenerations in the dog include generalised progressive retinal atrophy, retinal pigment epithelial dystrophy, congenital stationary night blindness and day blindness (hemeralopia). The clinical phenotype and pathology of these diseases closely resemble some types of human inherited retinal degeneration, in particular retinitis pigmentosa, one of the most common inherited causes of blindness in man. Molecular genetic investigations aim to identify the genetic mutations underlying the canine inherited retinal degenerations. Two major research strategies, candidate gene analys

Aetiology, prevalence and diagnosis of deafness in dogs and cats.

Peripheral deafness may be inherited or acquired, congenital or later-onset, and sensorineural or conductive. The most commonly observed forms are inherited congenital sensorineural, acquired later-onset sensorineural (ototoxicity, presbycusis) and acquired later-onset conductive (chronic otitis externa/media). In most dog and cat breeds inherited congenital sensorineural deafness results from perinatal degeneration of the stria vascularis, the vascular bed of the outer wall of the cochlear duct, which leads to hair cell degeneration. The strial degeneration appears to result from the absence

Comparison of the offspring of three serial pregnancies during voluntary alcohol consumption in Sinclair (S-1) miniature swine.

The offspring of serial breedings of voluntary alcohol consuming Sinclair (S-1) miniature swine have been evaluated over the past three years. The first and second litters of 12 dams and the third litter of 6 dams were examined. All study animals had been consuming alcohol for at least 18 months prior to the first breeding. Alcohol consumption was continuous throughout the ninth study. Twelve non-alcohol-consuming sows were used as controls. The results of the study revealed a progressive decrease in mean litter size from controls of 6.66 in the control litters to 1.8 piglets per litter in the…
