A girl with a history of autoimmune disease developed life-threatening agranulocytosis. A bone marrow biopsy demonstrated selective granulocytic hypoplasia. No antineutrophil antibodies were found. In vitro bone marrow culture of granulocytic progenitor cells suggested T cell-mediated inhibition of colony formation, which was reduced by in vitro treatment of marrow cells with either hydrocortisone or an antibody directed against T-lymphocytes and complement. We studied the effect of levamisole on the proliferation of granulocyte-committed progenitor cells (CFU-c) in the agar system. Media conditioned by pooled human peripheral blood mononuclear cells served as source of colony-stimulating activity (CSA). Levamisole at concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 10.0 micrograms/ml had no detectable stimulatory or inhibitory effect on granulopoiesis in vitro. Veterinization, catalyzed by worries about rabies in colonial Britain, has reconfigured dog-human relations beyond spaces of ill(health). Tracking human-dog relations across India and the UK, in this article, we argue that veterinization's reach is enabled by its "species reductionism," and that the ramifications for human and animal health as well as wellbeing have not been entirely positive. Our analysis points to the need for circumspection about current paradigms of interspecies health and calls for the rethinking of health beyond anthropocentrism.

We analyzed 217 patients with KMT2A-rearranged acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in 2 large sequential randomized trials. Those randomized to FLAG-Ida (fludarabine, cytarabine, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, idarubucin) had markedly lower rates of relapse than other chemotherapy regimens. Molecular measurable residual disease assessment after cycle 2 was strongly prognostic for relapse and death. Obstetric healthcare for Indigenous women remains a severe problem in low-income countries with great cultural diversity and a colonial past. The work of health professionals to prevent complications leading to maternal deaths is paramount, yet in these contexts, they face significant challenges in implementing culturally competent services. This paper aims to present findings from an ethnographic study that attempted to document the experience of health professionals providing obstetric services in order to show the complex sociocultural contexts in which they perform their work.

We isolated Fastidiosipila sanguinis for the first time in Asia, alongside Escherichia coli, from blood culture specimens in a case of complicated urinary tract infection with sepsis. In our case, F. sanguinis took 96 hours to form colonies under anaerobic culture and showed sensitivity to ceftriaxone, administered for the urinary tract infection. The pathogenicity and clinical significance of F. sanguinis, as well as its impact on the host when coinfected with other pathogens, require further analysis through the accumulation of cases.

Neutrophilic eccrine hidradenitis typically manifests as erythematous plaques on the face, trunk, or extremities. This eruption has been associated with numerous factors, but most commonly is seen with chemotherapy, particularly cytarabine. We report a 73-year-old woman with acute myelogenous leukemia who developed rapidly expansive neutrophilic eccrine hidradenitis mimicking facial cellulitis only after a course of cytarabine was followed by granulocyte-colony stimulating factor. Prompt diagnosis is imperative to prevent prolonged antimicrobial therapy.

Bone marrow stem cells are able to differentiate into nervous and endothelial cells. In our study, we found that administration of a bone marrow-stimulating factor (granulocyte colony-stimulating factor; G-CSF 50 microg/kg) decrease the brain infarct volume and enhance survival rate in a model of cerebral ischemia. Taken together, these data suggest a beneficial effect of a pharmacological endogenous bone marrow mobilization in the course of cerebral ischemia and open a new direction for cellular therapy strategy in stroke.

A 51-year old female, treated for hyperthyroidism with methimazole, developed agranulocytosis in the third month of therapy. After discontinuing the drug, a broad spectrum antibiotic regimen plus recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) were started. Her granulocyte count returned to normal with the 4(°) dose of G-CSF. We think that in patients with methimazole-induced agranulocytosis, G-CSF may reduce the risk and severity of infection and in some cases should be accepted as a part of the standard therapy.

Sixteen percent of California ground squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyi) were found to be shedding an average of 53,875 Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts/g of feces. Male squirrels had a higher prevalence and higher intensity of shedding than did female squirrels. The majority of C. parvum isolates matched a bovine-murine genotype, with a few isolates resembling a porcine genotype. Higher intensities of shedding by males may enhance dissemination and genotypic mixing of this protozoa given males' proclivity to disperse to nonnatal colonies.

Ultrafiltration is highly effective method for removal of bacteria and viruses and does not produce organohalides associated with water treatment by chlorine gas. The aim was to assess the hygiene suitability of the unit for possible use in bottled water production. The ultrafiltration unit was in operation for 220 hours with simulated of varying duration. The running time (220 hours) and shut-down duration (to 5 hours) did not in any way influence the effectiveness of the module (100% filtration of aerobic colony count at 37 degrees C and 22 degrees C).

Morphologic, microbiologic, and polymerase chain reaction amplification techniques were used to evaluate an alpaca (Lama pacos) with splenitis and intestinal volvulus. The intestinal volvulus produced a severe necrosuppurative typhlocolitis associated with vascular thrombosis and was most likely the cause of death of this animal. In addition, this animal had multiple coalescing abscesses affecting most of the splenic tissue. Incidence of poliomyelitis in Delhi between 1975 and 1992, estimated from available data, shows a ladder-pattern type of decline from 15.65 in 1975 to 5.90 in 1992. The linear regression analysis shows a declining trend of incidence by 66.28% during the period. Huge increase of population with fast growing slums and resettlement colonies in Delhi was attributed to be responsible for partly counteracting different poliomyelitis control/eradication activities. The population representativeness of estimated incidence showed constant improvement during 1980 to 1991.

In contrast to previous studies using chemically-induced diabetic rats, the in vivo acetylation of sulphamethazine is increased in spontaneously diabetic, insulin-dependent BB/Edinburgh (BB/E) Wistar rats compared to non-diabetic control animals from the same colony. In both diabetic and non-diabetic rats, male animals had a significantly higher acetylation capacity than female animals. The percentage recovery of the administered dose was significantly higher in urine samples from female rats.

Actinomadura brunnea produces 2'-N-methyl-8-methoxychlortetracycline. A derivative of this strain has been isolated that is specifically blocked in methylation of the 2'-amino position. This isolate was detected by screening approximately 30,000 colonies of a mutagenized population of Actinomadura brunnea using a direct soft agar overlay with an Escherichia coli indicator. The antibiotic produced by the blocked mutant has been identified as 8-methoxychlortetracycline (Sch 36969) based upon its biological activity, relative mobility on TLC and HPLC, and spectroscopic data.

We report three cases of polycythaemia with no evidence of clinical splenomegaly and normal splenic red cell pool on isotope spleen scan. In each case, however, a diagnosis of primary proliferative polycythaemia (PPP) was suggested by in-vitro erythropoietin-independent growth of peripheral blood erythroid colonies. In one of these cases two possible causes of secondary polycythaemia were also identified. The use of investigations such as isotope spleen scanning and erythroid cell culture in helping to establish a diagnosis of PPP is discussed.

In 1981, during the worldwide canine parvovirus (PV) epizootic, canine transmissible venereal sarcomas growing in Beagles in a colony regressed earlier than expected after the dogs became infected with PV. Subsequent studies revealed that modified-live PV vaccine (feline panleukopenia virus) was capable of preventing tumor transplantation when the vaccine was inoculated simultaneously with the tumor in a site distant from the implantation site. However, the PV vaccine had no effect if it was inoculated 3 or 18 days after the tumor was transplanted.

When cultivating Fusarium bulbigenum var. blasticola on the synthetic Rider media on the primary colonies tumour-like formations appear which are autonomous nondifferentiated cells. They display the resemblance with the real tumours in the following signs: differentiation, polymorphism, unlimited self-maintainance, aerobic glycolysis, etc. It is shown that under conditions of hypoxia, corresponding to the altitude of 2000-1000 m above sea-level the frequency of tumour-like formations decreases by 9-66% as compared to the cultivation conditions at pO2 of atmospheric air.
