A prospective study of community-acquired pneumonia in adults at Srinagarind Hospital, Khon kaen University was conducted from September 1987 to August 1988. Laboratory specimens were tested for bacterial and mycoplasmal culture, CIE for pneumococcal antigen and serological data for mycoplasma and P. pseudomallei. The results supported by clinical data were evaluated. We could identify the pathogens from 62 of 113 cases (55%). The usefulness of a recently developed portable haemoglobinometer in primary health care was assessed in a survey of anaemia carried out in an isolated Indian community living in the jungles of northern Peru. We have assessed foot problems of, and chiropody provision for, 96 people aged 80 years and over who were living at home. Seventy-seven per cent had difficulty cutting their toenails and 30% complained of pain in the feet. The commonest foot problems were corns or callus, abnormal nails, hallux valgus and other toe abnormalities. Only six subjects had normal healthy feet. A prospective study of amaurosis fugax was carried out in a Danish community (population 481,000); case ascertainment was based on the collaboration of practicing ophthalmologists and general practitioners. This paper compares the formal and informal care used by women living alone and women living with others using data from a household survey of women over 65. In contrast to those living with others, who use few formal services and receive most of their care from the children they live with, those living alone rely on a diverse group of informal caregivers and formal services, many of which are provided in their homes. Point prevalence rates and demographic characteristics associated with four specific forms of social phobia (public speaking/performing, writing in front of others, eating in restaurants, and use of public restrooms) were examined in a sample of adult residents of the greater St. Louis area. In July 1979, 1,900 gallons of trichloroethylene (TCE) were released into ground and surface water from a pipe manufacturing plant in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. To evaluate community and occupational exposure to TCE, we conducted environmental and medical surveys. Utilising the population based data resources of the Rochester Epidemiology Project, we determined the incidence and prevalence of chronic ulcerative colitis among Rochester, Minnesota, residents over the 20 year period, 1960-79. There are fewer studies on bacteremia coming from the community hospital, where the practicing family physician is likely to see this problem, than from the university hospital. The hypothesis of this study was that patterns of bacteremia would be different between the two types of hospitals.
