Exacerbation of Atopic Dermatitis Associated with Ustekinumab Treatment in Crohn's Disease.

Ustekinumab inhibits interleukins 12 and 23 and modulates the T helper cell-mediated immune response of Crohn's disease. However, ustekinumab may also exacerbate atopic disease by increasing the T helper 2 cell-mediated pathway. We present the first known case of exacerbation of atopic dermatitis in a patient with Crohn's disease receiving ustekinumab. Additional associations in dose frequency, peripheral eosinophilia, and elevated serum IgE were observed. However, while novel in Crohn's disease, exacerbation of atopy after ustekinumab infusion has been observed in patients with psoriasis and …

Mechanisms and Effects of Isorhamnetin on Imiquimod-Induced Psoriasiform Dermatitis in Mice.

Isorhamnetin (IRh), which has a wide range of pharmacological effects, is one of the most significant active components in the fruits of Hippophae rhamnoides L. and the leaves of Ginkgo biloba L. It protects the heart and brain, in addition to possessing anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, organ protection, and anti-obesity properties. We sought to assess IRh's anti-psoriatic activity, explore its immunomodulatory properties in reducing the severity of psoriatic symptoms, and evaluate its potential immunotherapeutic effects. We used IRh to treat imiquimod (IMQ)-induced psoriasis in BAL

Sebaceous gland atrophy in seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp; a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Sebaceous gland (SG) atrophy is well-documented in scalp lesions of psoriasis and has been considered as an important clue to psoriatic alopecia. However, its specificity for psoriasis has been questioned over the years. We hypothesize that SG atrophy is not specific for psoriasis and looked for its presence in biopsies of seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of biopsy specimens of clinically suspected and histopathologically proven seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp for changes in SGs between January 1, 2014 and August 6, 2021. RESULTS:…

Allergic contact dermatitis to isothiazolinones in a rubber factory: A case report.

Isothiazolinones, used as preservative, are known to be skin sensitizers. Although cosmetics represent their main source, occupational exposure may be a significant origin of eczema. While allergic eczema related to these derivates have been reported in a number of professional sectors, their presence in the same workplace was not common.

A low level of health literacy is a predictor of corticophobia in atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Topical corticosteroids (TCS) are the mainstay of treatment in atopic dermatitis (AD) flares. The fears and worries concerning TCS are known as corticophobia. Corticophobia is common in patients with AD and can lead to suboptimal TCS application and treatment failure. Health literacy (HL) may influence corticophobia. TOPICOP© and HLS-EU-PT questionnaires have been developed to evaluate corticophobia and HL, respectively. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the relationship between corticophobia and the degree of HL in patients with AD. METHODS: Prospective cross-sectional study with AD patients …

A Case of Linear Exacerbation of Atopic Dermatitis with Secondary Prurigo Nodularis.

Inflammatory acquired Blaschko-linear dermatoses (IABLD) are a continuous concept involving diseases such as lichen striatus, blaschkitis, and atopic dermatitis. However, atopic dermatitis that showed increase in severity along Blaschko lines is rarely reported on its own. Herein, we report a rare case of atopic dermatitis with secondary prurigo nodularis along Blaschko lines, which may be valuable in broadening the concept of IABLD. A 28-year-old male presented with multiple, pruritic, brownish nodules on the left lower extremity along Blaschko lines for 3 to 4 years. The patient had atopic d…

Aluminum: The 2022 American Contact Dermatitis Society Allergen of the Year.

Aluminum recently was selected as the 2022 Allergen of the Year by the American Contact Dermatitis Society. Aluminum contact allergy, which most often is related to its use as an adjuvant in select vaccines and allergen-specific immunotherapies, tends to present with pruritic subcutaneous nodules at the injection site. Allergy to aluminum-containing antiperspirants manifests as axillary vault dermatitis. In this article, we highlight the growing recognition of aluminum contact allergy, particularly in the pediatric population, focusing on distinct presentations of aluminum allergic contact der…

Classifying atopic dermatitis: a systematic review of phenotypes and associated characteristics.

Atopic dermatitis is a heterogeneous disease, accompanied by a wide variation in disease presentation and the potential to identify many phenotypes that may be relevant for prognosis and treatment. We aimed to systematically review previously reported phenotypes of atopic dermatitis and any characteristics associated with them. Ovid EMBASE, Ovid MEDLINE and Web of Science were searched from inception till 12 February 2021 for studies attempting to classify atopic dermatitis. Primary outcomes are atopic dermatitis phenotypes and characteristics associated with them in subsequent analyses. A sec…

Biomarkers in atopic dermatitis-a review on behalf of the International Eczema Council.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common yet complex skin disease, posing a therapeutic challenge with increasingly recognized different phenotypes among variable patient populations. Because therapeutic response may vary on the basis of heterogeneous clinical and molecular phenotypes, a shift toward precision medicine approaches may improve AD management. Herein, we will consider biomarkers as potential instruments in the toolbox of precision medicine in AD and will review the process of biomarker development and validation, the opinion of AD experts on the use of biomarkers, types of biomarkers, e…

Incidence of occupational contact dermatitis in healthcare workers: a systematic review.

Healthcare workers (HCWs) can be considered at an increased risk of developing occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) due to repetitive hand washing with soaps and disinfectants and extended use of gloves for many hours during the day. The aim of this study was to summarize the incidence of OCD in HCWs. We searched the databases PubMed/MEDLINE (1980-present), EMBASE (1980-present) and Cochrane Library (1992-present) through May 2020 using the search term 'incidence of contact dermatitis in HCWs' according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines.…

Corneal Perforation in Patients Under Treatment With Dupilumab for Atopic Dermatitis.

PURPOSE: We report, for the first time, 2 cases of corneal ulceration and perforation after treatment with dupilumab for atopic dermatitis. METHODS: A 30-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man developed unilateral severe corneal ulceration and perforation while on dupilumab therapy after 3 and 9 months, respectively. RESULTS: Corneal cultures were negative in both cases except for scanty growth of Staphylococcus species on enrichment. Both cases progressed to perforation despite intensive topical antibiotic treatment. The first case required a tectonic keratoplasty to restore globe integrity a…

Pruritus in psoriasis and atopic dermatitis: current treatments and new perspectives.

Psoriasis and atopic dermatitis (AD) are two common chronic inflammatory skin diseases. Although showing different etiology and clinical manifestations, patients with either disease suffer from low health-related quality of life due to pruritus (dermal itch). Recent studies have revealed that more than 85% of psoriasis patients suffer from pruritus, and it is also the dominating symptom of AD. However, as this is a non-life treating symptom, it was partly neglected for years. In this review, we focus on current findings as well as the impact and potential treatments of pruritus in these two sk…

First case report of dermatitis associated with Leporacarus gibbus in cat.

BACKGROUND: Leporacarus gibbus is a highly specific acarian parasitizing in rabbits, with a proven zoonotic potential. While the majority of cases of L. gibbus infestation are asymptomatic, several cases of pruritic cutaneous condition in both laboratory and pet rabbits were reported. Up to date, L. gibbus has not been linked with clinical signs in any other species than rabbits and humans. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report described the clinical case of a 14-month-old cat with a dermatitis linked to L. gibbus. Mites specimens were collected by brushing, followed by light microscopy examina…

Management of inadequate response and adverse effects to dupilumab in atopic dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by pruritus, skin pain, and sleep disturbances. Currently, dupilumab is the only systemic therapy and biologic medication approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for moderate-to-severe AD in adults and children. There is a sparsity of literature available on determining treatment failure with dupilumab and the next steps health care providers can take to treat AD. Individual goals and quality of life and not just body surface area should be considered when defining treatment failure. Possible confoun…

Allergic contact dermatitis from dyes used in the temple of spectacles.

BACKGROUND: We observed an increasing number of patients who presented with facial or retro-auricular dermatitis after skin contact with plastic spectacles or plastic covered temples. OBJECTIVES: To identify the allergens in plastic spectacles that may cause allergic contact dermatitis. METHODS: All patients with suspected allergic contact dermatitis to eyewear were tested with Solvent Orange 60 (SO60), four additionally with Solvent Yellow 14 (SY14), and five with scrapings from their own spectacles. In one case, a chemical analysis of the spectacles was performed to uncover the causative a…
