Spinal subarachnoid cyst in a cat.

A 7-year-old neutered female domestic short hair cat was presented with hind limb ataxia. A subarachnoid cyst in the T10-T11 spinal cord region was identified by myelography as a collection of contrast medium in the subarachnoid space.

Two cases of cutaneous nodular dirofilariasis in the cat.

Cutaneous nodular dirofilariasis is occasionally reported in dogs but is rare in cats. This report describes two cases of cutaneous nodular lesions due to Dirofilaria immitis adult parasites in domestic shorthaired cats living in an endemic area in northern Italy.

Newcastle disease virus: Insights into molecular epidemiology, dynamics of distribution and diagnostics.

AbstractThe Newcastle disease virus (NDV) is the etiological agent of a highly transmissible avian disease, first recognized in 1926. The virus continues to pose a substantial threat to both commercial and domestic poultry farming globally, causing major outbreaks with high mortality rates and resulting in considerable economic losses. Despite the widespread use of vaccines and other control measures outbreaks persist. This is linked to the NDV significant genetic variability, its capacity to evolve under selective pressure and its wide range of natural hosts, with diverse virus variants conti

Multi-session smart night charging of EVs for accelerated decarbonization of electric mobility.

The majority of electric vehicles (EVs) are charged domestically overnight, when the precise timing of power allocation is not important to the user, thus providing a source of flexibility that can be leveraged by charging control algorithms. In this paper, we show that by keeping the EV connected to a standard domestic smart plug every night, it is possible to achieve an approximate 37% annual reduction in carbon intensity compared to uncontrolled charging (based on 2022 UK National Grid data) without compromising the EV owners' charging demand. For this purpose, we use Model Predictive Contr

Systemic use of terbinafine in veterinary medicine: A review of pharmacokinetic studies.

Terbinafine is an orally and topically active allylamine antifungal agent with fungistatic and fungicidal action. Its mechanism of action is the competitive inhibition of squalene epoxidase which leads to squalene accumulation and ergosterol depletion in the cell membrane. Clinically relevant pathogens can include but are not limited to: Aspergillus spp., Candida spp., Blastomyces dermatitidis, Histoplasma capsulatum, Emydomyces testavorans, Ophidiomyces ophiodiicola, and Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis. Terbinafine is an antifungal drug that has been used successfully in humans with few advers

Alumni Perspectives on Cultural Competence After a Rural Farms Immersion Experience.

BACKGROUND: The Rural Farms program is a domestic intercultural immersion in a senior-level community health and leadership nursing clinical course. Students provide on-site health and safety education, health screenings, and immunizations to Latino/a/e workers on rural dairy farms. This study explored the effects of the experience on perceived cultural competence and its translation to nursing practice after graduation. METHOD: Qualitative data were collected via survey from alumni who completed the Rural Farms program between 2011 and 2018. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. RESUL

The use of haystacks by wolves may facilitate the transmission of sarcoptic mange.

Wildlife that use anthropogenic resources often come into conflict with humans, e.g. due to damaged property, habituation or transmission of pathogens, amongst them Sarcoptes scabiei, the aetiological agent of sarcoptic mange, an emerging panzootic skin disease. This study examines the use of haystacks intended for supplementary feeding of European bison (Bison bonasus) by wolves (Canis lupus) with sarcoptic mange and the potential role of this behaviour in skin parasite transmission and human-wolf conflict. Hay samples from the beds used by wolves were found to harbour S. scabiei mites, even

Staphylococci, Reptiles, Amphibians, and Humans: What Are Their Relations?

Reptiles and amphibians are largely present in many environments, including domestic areas when they are kept as pet animals. They often harbor zoonotic pathogens, which can pose a serious risk of infection for humans, mainly immunocompromised individuals, the elderly, children, and pregnant women. Several studies have been carried out to verify the role of cold-blooded animals in the epidemiology of some bacteria, mainly Salmonella, whereas scarce attention has been focused on these animals as a source of staphylococci. These bacteria are often antimicrobial-resistant and they act as opportun

New Haplotypes of Blastocystis sp. Identified in Faeces from Various Animal Groups in Algeria.

PURPOSE: Blastocystis sp. is a single-celled, anaerobic, parasitic protozoan commonly found in the intestinal tract of animals and humans globally. Genetic analysis has revealed significant diversity within its species, leading to the identification of at least 40 subtypes (ST1-ST40). This study aimed to identify and differentiate Blastocystis in faeces samples from various animal hosts in Algeria. METHODS: A total of 403 fecal samples, collected from both domestic and zoo animals, were subjected to PCR amplification and sequencing of Blastocystis-specific small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU-RNA

First Detection of Cryptosporidium parvum in the Endemic Cyprus Mouflon (Ovis gmelini ophion).

PURPOSE: Cryptosporidium is an intestinal zoonotic protozoan parasite that infects domesticated and wild animals. There are no reports on the prevalence and molecular characterisation of Cryptosporidium in the endemic Cyprus mouflon. The mouflon is strictly protected by national and international legislation. Its main distribution is Paphos State Forest and surrounding areas, where it may share the same water sources as free-ranging domestic goats. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. and genotypes in mouflon and free-ranging goats within the m

Macroeconomic and monetary policy responses in selected highly indebted MENA countries post Covid 19: A structural VAR approach.

With limited fiscal space, MENA governments with flexible exchange rates have been relying extensively on accommodative monetary policy to circumvent external shocks such as Covid 19 and other domestic macroeconomic imbalances. Other MENA countries with high debt levels and fixed exchange rates are not able to use conventional monetary policy effectively. We use a battery of econometric models to identify domestic and external nominal shocks affecting the MENA region and their dynamic transmission mechanisms through impulse response functions and granger causality tests derived from a structur

Forecasting the evolution of fast-changing transportation networks using machine learning.

Transportation networks play a critical role in human mobility and the exchange of goods, but they are also the primary vehicles for the worldwide spread of infections, and account for a significant fraction of CO2 emissions. We investigate the edge removal dynamics of two mature but fast-changing transportation networks: the Brazilian domestic bus transportation network and the U.S. domestic air transportation network. We use machine learning approaches to predict edge removal on a monthly time scale and find that models trained on data for a given month predict edge removals for the same mon
