PURPOSE: To determine the prevalence and risk factors of lateral epicondylitis in a mountain village in Japan.
METHODS: 176 men and 246 women aged 24 to 86 (mean, 61) years from a mountain village in Japan underwent regular medical examination and completed a self-administered questionnaire with items related to gender, weight, height, dominant hand, heaviness of labour (no job, light, intermediate, and heavy), presence of elbow pain 2 weeks before examination, and smoking and drinking experience. The diagnosis of lateral epicondylitis was based on self-reported symptoms and clinical signs.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the early efficacy of metallic modular radial head prostheses in patients with Mason III and IV unreconstructable radial head fractures.
METHODS: The medical records of 16 patients (9 males, 7 females) with a mean age of 43 years old (31 to 57) with Mason III/IV unreconstructable radial head fractures requiring metallic modular radial head replacement between January 2009 and March 2012, were reviewed retrospectively. The functional results were assessed by range-of-movement, Mayo elbow performance score (MEPS). All patients underwent radiographic evaluation for radial he…

Children with secondary dystonia due to cerebral palsy exhibit abnormal upper extremity postures and slow voluntary movement. However, the interaction between abnormal postures and abnormal movement in dystonia is still unclear. Some mechanisms by which postures are maintained in dystonia include stretch reflexes, overflow of muscle activation to other muscles, and direct coactivation of antagonist muscles. This study explored the independent contributions of each of these postural mechanisms to abnormal biceps brachii (antagonist) activity during elbow extension, which slows movement. A linea…

BACKGROUND: In brachial plexus avulsion, a recent technique connects the ending of the disrupted musculocutaneous nerve to the side of the intact phrenic nerve to regain elbow flexion. This requires the phrenic nerve to perform a new double function: independent control of breathing and elbow flexion. Neuroplastic changes associated with acquisition of double nerve functions have not yet been investigated.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate neuroplastic changes associated with acquisition of double nerve functions in a monofunctional nerve (phrenic nerve).
DESIGN: Clinical and functional magnetic resona…

Degenerative joint disease (DJD) is common in domesticated cats. Our purpose was to describe how radiographic findings thought to indicate feline DJD relate to macroscopic cartilage degeneration in appendicular joints. Thirty adult cats euthanized for reasons unrelated to this study were evaluated. Orthogonal digital radiographs of the elbow, tarsus, stifle, and coxofemoral joints were evaluated for the presence of DJD. The same joints were dissected for visual inspection of changes indicative of DJD and macroscopic cartilage damage was graded using a Total Cartilage Damage Score. When conside…

Although distal humeral fractures are well described in the literature, concomitant distal triceps avulsion has not previously been reported … stal humeral fractures. More recent literature supports early active-assisted range-of-motion (ROM) elbow exercises after triceps tendon repair, and our case supports those recommendations.A 48-year-old, right-hand-dominant man, who was a living-related kidney transplant recipient 3 years previously, presented with radiographic evidence of an intra-arti …

BACKGROUND: There is conflicting evidence regarding extracorporeal shock wave treatment for chronic tennis elbow.
HYPOTHESIS: Treatment with repetitive low-energy extracorporeal shock wave treatment is superior to repetitive placebo extra-corporeal shock wave treatment.
METHODS: Seventy-eight patients enrolled in a placebo-controlled trial. All patients were tennis players with recalcitrant MRI-confirmed tennis elbow of at least 12 months' duration. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either active low-energy extracorporeal shock wave treatment given weekly for 3 weeks (treatment grou…

Previously published studies on transfers to restore elbow flexion have rarely compared the outcomes among different techniques. We found no comparison between the Steindler procedure and pectoralis major tendon transfer. This study compared functional outcomes after these two types of elbow flexorplasty performed in conjunction with shoulder arthrodesis for patients with brachial plexus injuries. The same examiner assessed 14 patients who underwent shoulder fusion and elbow flexorplasty. Five had a pectoralis major tendon transfer, and nine underwent a modified Steindler procedure. All patien…

Fundamental and clinical studies on T-1982 (cefbuperazone), a new cephamycin antibiotic, in the field of obstetrics and gynecology were carried out, and the following results were obtained. The levels of T-1982 transferred to uterine artery, elbow vein and uterus were determined after intravenous drip infusion of 1.0 g for 1 or 2 hours. No difference of concentration between uterine artery and elbow vein was observed from 45 minutes to 5 hours after the end of administration. The concentration of T-1982 in uterine artery ranged from 9.8 to 48 micrograms/ml after drug administration, and decrea…

Articular fracture of distal humerus account for 2% of all adult elbow fracture. The coronal shear fracture combined with olecranon fracture require stable anatomical reduction and stabilisation for early rehabilitation and mobility. Numerous reports have described various approaches in tackling this type of fracture and method of fracture fixation. Here, we shared a case of a lady with traumatic coronal shear capitulum and trochlear comminuted fracture fixed using posterior elbow approach with fracture site open window technique in managing distal humerus articular fracture with ipsilateral o…

Distal humerus fractures present complex challenges in the elderly patient. These fractures often occur in patients who are living independently but have poor bone quality and low physiologic reserve, thus complicating management decisions and treatment. The goal is a painless, functional, stable elbow that allows completion of the activities of daily living. Nonsurgical management is reserved for those who cannot tolerate surgery. Open reduction and internal fixation is the preferred choice in fractures amenable to rigid fixation and early motion. Although total elbow arthroplasty provides im…

Osteochondromas are common benign bone tumors. They may occur on any bone preformed in cartilage, but usually are found on the metaphysis of a long bone near the physis. In this article, we report a case of the subluxation of the radial head caused by osteochondroma on the radial tuberosity. A 9-year-old female patient presented with a hard palpable mass and pain in her posterior aspect of left elbow joint. Preoperative radiography and MRI demonstrated an expansile bone lesion arising in the left radial tuberosity of the proximal radius. Resection of the bone tumor was done without any complic…

Medial epicondylitis, often referred to as "golfer's elbow," is a common pathology. Flexor-pronator tendon degeneration occurs with repetitive forced wrist extension and forearm supination during activities involving wrist flexion and forearm pronation. A staged process of pathologic change in the tendon can result in structural breakdown and irreparable fibrosis or calcification. Patients typically report persistent medial-sided elbow pain that is exacerbated by daily activities. Athletes may be particularly symptomatic during the late cocking or early acceleration phases of the throwing moti…

Musculotendinous ruptures of the distal biceps brachii are extremely rare injuries whose clinical presentation is similar to distal biceps avulsion. We describe two cases of patients who suffered a distal biceps brachii musculotendinous partial rupture. The first patient was playing soccer as goalkeeper and experienced sudden pain while throwing the ball overhead with his left arm. The second patient experienced sudden pain while weightlifting with his right arm. The mechanism of injury was the same in the two cases, as both involved glenohumeral elevation with elbow extension and forearm supi…

Radial head fractures are the most common type of elbow fracture in adults. Unrecognised disruption of the intraosseous membrane at the time of injury can lead to severe wrist pain from proximal radial migration especially if the radial head is excised. In this case, despite anatomical reduction and internal fixation of the radial head fracture, longitudinal forearm instability developed after delayed radial head resection was performed 7 months post-injury. A Suave-Kapandji procedure was performed due to ongoing wrist pain. Because of the previous radial head resection, this led to a floating…

Stretch injuries of the C5-C7 roots of the brachial plexus traditionally have been associated with palsies of shoulder abduction/external rotation, elbow flexion/extension, and wrist, thumb, and finger extension. Based on current myotome maps we hypothesized that, as far as motion is concerned, palsies involving C5-C6 and C5-C7 root injuries should be similar. In 38 patients with upper-type palsies of the brachial plexus, we examined for correlations between clinical findings and root injury level, as documented by CT tomomyeloscan. Contrary to commonly held beliefs, C5-C7 root injuries were n…

These case reports review the clinical outcomes of 4 patients who underwent nerve transfer to a triceps motor branch of the radial nerve. Mean follow-up was 26 ± 15 months. Two patients had a transfer using an ulnar nerve fascicle to the flexor carpi ulnaris muscle, yielding a motor recovery of grade M5 elbow extension strength in one case and M4+ in the other. In 1 patient, a thoracodorsal nerve branch was used as the donor; this patient recovered M4 strength. One patient had a transfer using a radial nerve fascicle to the extensor carpi radialis longus muscle and recovered M5 strength. These…

We report the first use of an endoprosthetic diaphyseal replacement after the excision of a midshaft radial tumor. We present a rare case of a solitary midshaft radial metastasis in a 72-year-old gentleman who was treated 8 years earlier for primary renal cell carcinoma by radical nephrectomy. Follow-up for this patient was 25 months after implant insertion and at the latest review was pain-free. Functional scores for the elbow (using the Mayo Elbow Performance Score) and the wrist (using the Mayo Wrist Score) were 80 and 60, respectively, both out of 100. Use of a midshaft radial endoprosthes…
