Evaluation of a new tool - "Step by step with my baby" - to support parental involvement in the care of preterm infants.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Parental guidance is essential for supporting parental involvement, maintaining the quality and safety of infant care, and limiting parental stress. The efficiency of a new tool to support parental empowerment - "Step by step with my baby" - was evaluated. The perception of this tool by parents and nurses was studied. METHODS: This was a prospective, observational study conducted from September 2019 to December 2020 at a level-3 neonatal center. A total of 79 newborns (<33 weeks of gestational age or small for gestational age), 84 parents, and 94 nurses were included. The

Bioaccessibility as a determining factor in the bioavailability and toxicokinetics of cadmium compounds.

Cadmium toxicity occurs where there is absorption and accumulation of cadmium ions (Cd2+) in tissues beyond tolerable levels. Significant differences in the release of Cd2+ from cadmium compounds in biological fluids, like gastric fluid, may indicate differences in bioavailability and absorption. This means that direct read-across from high solubility cadmium compounds to lower solubility compounds may not accurately reflect potential hazards. Here, the relative bioaccessibility in gastric fluid of cadmium telluride and cadmium chloride was evaluated using in vitro bioelution tests whilst the

Vultures from different trophic guilds show distinct oral pathogenic yeast signatures and co-occurrence networks.

Vultures have evolved adaptive mechanisms to prevent infections associated with their scavenging lifestyle. However, food-borne exposure to antimicrobial pharmaceuticals can promote opportunistic infections with adverse outcomes. Here, we used multivariate and network analyses to increase understanding of the behavior of the yeast communities causing oral mycosis outbreaks recently reported in wild nestling cinereous (Aegypius monachus), griffon (Gyps fulvus) and Egyptian (Neophron percnopterus) vultures (CV, GV and EV, respectively) exposed to antibiotics from livestock farming. Breastfeeding and Oral Health: Evidence and Methodological Challenges.

Breastfeeding is a powerful health-promoting behavior. A 2016 Lancet global collaboration to review the health implications of breastfeeding was among the first to consider oral health outcomes. While a role was suggested for breastfeeding in preventing malocclusion, caries was the only included disease condition unfavorably associated with breastfeeding. The present critical review examines the evidence connecting breastfeeding practices to these outcomes and discusses the methodological challenges inherent in reaching causal conclusions. Published systematic reviews show some evidence of a p

Long-Term Energy Deficit in Mice Causes Long-Lasting Hypothalamic Alterations after Recovery.

Although the short-term effects of fasting or energy deficit on hypothalamic neuropeptide circuitries are now better understood, the effects of long-term energy deficit and refeeding remain to be elucidated. We showed that after a long-term energy deficit, mice exhibited persistent hypoleptinemia following the refeeding period despite restoration of fat mass, ovarian activity, and feeding behavior. We aimed to examine the hypothalamic adaptations after 10 weeks of energy deficit and after 10 further weeks of nutritional recovery. To do so, we assessed the mRNA levels of the leptin receptor and…

Ethanol elevates physiological all-trans-retinoic acid levels in select loci through altering retinoid metabolism in multiple loci: a potential mechanism of ethanol toxicity.

All-trans-retinoic acid (atRA) supports embryonic development, central nervous system function, and the immune response. atRA initiates neurogenesis and dendritic growth in the hippocampus and is required for spatial memory; superphysiological atRA inhibits neurogenesis, causes teratology and/or embryo toxicity, and alters cognitive function and behavior. Because abnormal atRA shares pathological conditions with alcoholism, inhibition of retinol (vitamin A) activation into atRA has been credited widely as a mechanism of ethanol toxicity. Here, we analyze the effects of ethanol on retinoid conc

Severe wear and tooth loss in wild ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta): a function of feeding ecology, dental structure, and individual life history.

The ring-tailed lemurs at Beza Mahafaly Special Reserve, Madagascar, exhibit a high frequency of severe wear and antemortem tooth loss. As part of a long-term study, we collected dental data on 83 living adult ring-tailed lemurs during 2003 and 2004. Among these individuals, 192 teeth were scored as absent. The most frequently missing tooth position is M1 (24%). As M1 is the first tooth to erupt, its high frequency of absence (primarily a result of wear) is not remarkable. However, the remaining pattern of tooth loss does not correlate with the sequence of eruption. We suggest that this patter

Injections of leptin reinforced the inhibition of feeding behavior and food intake seen in CART-treated fish. Central injection of leptin induced an increase in CART I mRNA in the optic tectum, hypothalamus, and olfactory bulbs but had no effect on CART II mRNA expression in the brain. These results suggest that CA …

Effects of cholecystokinin and caerulein on human eating behavior and pain sensation: a review.

Since the mid-1970s, evidence has accumulated that cholecystokinin (CCK) has a role as a neuromodulator or neurotransmitter in the central nervous system as well as in the periphery. CCK has been shown to have a variety of effects on gastrointestinal functions and is one of the main candidates for a role as a peripheral negative feedback signal to stop feeding behavior. CCK produces satiety not only in animals but also in man: it reduces appetite and activation arising from the preparation of a meal and inhibits intake of liquid and solid food in both lean and obese subjects. The closely relat…

Metabolic effects of the schizophrenia-associated 3q29 deletion.

The 1.6 Mb 3q29 deletion is associated with developmental and psychiatric phenotypes, including a 40-fold increased risk for schizophrenia. Reduced birth weight and a high prevalence of feeding disorders in patients suggest underlying metabolic dysregulation. We investigated 3q29 deletion-induced metabolic changes using our previously generated heterozygous B6.Del16+/Bdh1-Tfrc mouse model. Animals were provided either standard chow (STD) or high-fat diet (HFD). Growth curves were performed on HFD mice to assess weight change (n = 30-50/group). Indirect calorimetry and untargeted metabolomics w

Dysfunction of the serotonergic system in the brain of synapsin triple knockout mice is associated with behavioral abnormalities resembling synapsin-related human pathologies.

Synapsins (Syns) are a family of phosphoproteins associated with synaptic vesicles (SVs). Their main function is to regulate neurotransmitter release by maintaining a reserve pool of SVs at the presynaptic terminal. Previous studies reported that the deletion of one or more Syn genes in mice results in an epileptic phenotype and autism-related behavioral abnormalities. Here we aimed at characterizing the behavioral phenotype and neurobiological correlates of the deletion of Syns in a Syn triple knockout (TKO) mouse model. Wild type (WT) and TKO mice were tested in the open field, novelty suppr

Adult neurogenesis augmentation attenuates anhedonia and HPA axis dysregulation in a mouse model of chronic stress and depression.

Major depressive disorder is a common debilitating mental health problem that represents one of the leading causes of disability. Up to date, the therapeutic targets and approaches are still limited. Adult hippocampal neurogenesis (AHN) has been proposed as a critical contributor to the pathophysiology and treatment of depression, altering the hippocampal control over stress response at network, neuroendocrine and behavioral levels. These findings together have suggested that manipulating AHN may be a promising therapeutic strategy for depression. To investigate this question, we assessed whet

Effect of heat stress on the behavioral and physiological patterns of Small-tail Han sheep housed indoors.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of heat stress on the behavioral and physiological patterns in Small-tail Han sheep housed indoors in summer without climate control. Sixteen adult animals were allocated into two groups of eight animals, based on sex: one group of eight rams and one group of eight ewes. Temperature-humidity index (THI) was used to assess the degree of heat stress. All sheep were subjected to a 10-day pre-experimental period of habituation to the experimental feed and environment. Physiological parameters monitored were respiratory rate (RR), rectal temperatu

Effects of monoamine reuptake inhibitors in assays of acute pain-stimulated and pain-depressed behavior in rats.

UNLABELLED: Pain is associated with stimulation of some behaviors (eg, withdrawal reflexes) but depression of many other behaviors (eg, feeding, locomotion, positively reinforced operant behavior). Drugs that block reuptake of serotonin, norepinephrine, and/or dopamine are widely used to treat depression, and they have also emerged as useful drugs for treatment of pain. This study compared effects of selective and mixed-action inhibitors of serotonin, norepinephrine, and/or dopamine reuptake in assays of acute pain-stimulated and pain-depressed behavior. Intraperitoneal injection of dilute aci

Chlordiazepoxide-induced expression of c-Fos in the central extended amygdala and other brain regions of the C57BL/6J and DBA/2J inbred mouse strains: relationships to mechanisms of ethanol action.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have established an association between the ethanol-induced locomotor response and activation of the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) as determined by changes in the number of Fos-like immunoreactive (Fos-li) neurons. The purpose of the current study was to determine if the benzodiazepine chlordiazepoxide (CDP) would produce similar effects to ethanol on behavior and the CeA. METHODS: In experiment 1, C57BL/6J (B6) and DBA/2J (D2) mice were administered CDP over a dose range of 3 to 30 mg/kg and the effects on locomotor behavior and the number of Fos-li neuro

Kinematics of elongate harvestmen chelicerae: Comparative range of motion analyses in extant Ischyropsalis (Dyspnoi, Opiliones).

Chelicerae, the mouthparts of chelicerates, are essential for food processing. Particularly within harvestmen (Opiliones), some species have greatly elongated their tripartite chelicerae and utilize them for mating behavior, defense, and primarily for predation. We investigated two European species, Ischyropsalis muellneri and Ischyropsalis hellwigii, which occupy different niches (caves, forests), exhibit different feeding ecologies (opportunist, specialist), and first and foremost possess different chelicerae morphologies (long and thin, short and robust). We scanned the specimens using stat

Body proportions for the facilitation of walking, running and flying: the case of partridges.

BACKGROUND: Predation is one of the most important natural selection forces. Prey species can optimize feeding behavior and escape from predators based on mobility conditioned by body proportions. With age, mobility capacity increases and individuals are more efficient in finding resources and safety (e.g., food and refuge). Birds' mobility is driven by the dimensions, of the head and torso, as well as the extremities and flight feathers. To assess the relationship between body traits and to understand how body proportions are organized in wild Red-legged partridges (Alectoris rufa), we used b…
