The Lassa virus one of the main etiological agent of hemorrhagic fevers in the world: according to WHO estimates, it affects 100,000 to 300,000 people annually, which results in up to 10,000 deaths [1]. Although expansion of Lassa fever caused by this pathogen is mostly limited to the West African countries: Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea and Nigeria, imported cases have been historically documented in Europe, the United States of America (USA), Canada, Japan, and Israel [2]. In 2017, WHO included the Lassa virus in the list of priority pathogens in need of accelerated research, development of …

Q fever is a disease caused by the bacterial pathogen Coxiella burnetii. This hardy organism can easily spread long distances in the wind, and only a few infectious aerosolized particles are necessary to cause serious illness. Presentations of Q fever disease can be wide-ranging, allowing it to masquerade as other illnesses and highlight the importance of laboratory testing for diagnosis and treatment. This review summarizes Q fever's epidemiology and clinical presentations and presents classical laboratory diagnostic assays and novel approaches to detecting this troubling disease.

Objectives: Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is the most frequent monogenic autoinflammatory disease. It is associated with MEFV mutations. Its main features are recurrent episodes of fever and serositis. Patients can display dermatological manifestations such as erysipelas-like erythema, generally considered as a neutrophilic dermatosis (ND). It has been suggested that FMF can be associated with other types of ND. Our aim was to perform a systematic review of the literature to assess the link between ND and FMF.Method: A systematic review of the literature was performed using MEDLINE from 1…

Despite distinct diagnostic criteria, several gastrointestinal pathologies can masquerade haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) during the peripartum period. Acute fatty liver of pregnancy, HELLP (haemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelets) syndrome, miliary tuberculosis, visceral leishmaniasis, abdominal surgical emergencies, haemolytic anaemias and haematological malignancies may have clinical and laboratory presentation similar to that of HLH. In this report, we present the case of a 26-year-old woman with 38-weeks' gestation and abdominal pain, vomiting, intermittent fever an…

Enteric fever is a systemic disease characterised predominantly by fever and abdominal pain, caused by dissemination of Salmonella Typhi or Salmonella Paratyphi. Enteric fever can affect many organ systems including liver, gastrointestinal tract, kidney and brain. Neurological manifestations occur in 2%-40% of patients and include meningitis, Gullian-Barré syndrome, neuritis and neuro-psychiatric symptoms. Spastic quadriparesis is a rare complication.

Enteric fever (typhoid and paratyphoid)is caused by Salmonella typhi and Salmonella paratyphi. It is spread by fecal-oral route, largely through contamination of water and foodstuff. Developing countries are the worst affected. It takes 7 - 21 days from ingestion of the organism to manifestation of symptoms which are generally Fever, relative bradycardia, and pain abdomen. Hepatosplenomegaly, intestinal bleeding, and perforation are the features at various stages of the disease. The bacteria invade the submucous layer and proliferate in the Payer's patches. Blood culture is the gold standard f…

INTRODUCTION: Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) is a rare, under-explored lethal viral infection of cattle with gammaherpesvirus aetiological agents. Most often, the disease occurs on farms where cattle and sheep are kept together. However, other trigger mechanisms and environmental factors contribute. This study investigates the causation of MCF.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: An outbreak of MCF occurred in June - August 2017 in Kharchev village in Irkutsk Oblast, Russia. In this paper, we provide epidemiological (sanitary status of pastures, watering places, and premises) and weather data during the o…

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate middle and inner ear function and hearing status of children with familial Mediterranean fever (FMF).
METHODS: We assigned 56 patients with FMF to the study group and 52 healthy volunteers to the control group. The mean age of patients in the study and control groups were 10.10 ± 3.70 and 9.77 ± 3.74 years, respectively. Physical examination and hearing evaluation were performed in both groups. The audiological test battery included 226-Hz tympanometry, pure tone audiometric evaluation, acoustic stapedial reflex measurements, distortion product otoacoustic emission reco…

Q fever is a zoonotic disease caused by Coxiella burnetii, an obligate intracellular bacterium, which cannot be grown using routine blood culture methods. Although C. burnetii is reported to be the causative agent in approximately 50% of blood culture-negative infective endocarditis cases in developed countries, the incidence in Turkey is yet to be defined. The clinical course of Q fever endocarditis is generally subacute and chronic; the disease may be present for years with only subtle symptoms and no vegetation visible on echocardiography while the bacteria gradually destroy the heart valve…

Tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) is an infection caused by Borrelia spirochetes. In North America, Borrelia hermsii is the most common cause for TBRF. This vector-borne disease is transmitted by Ornithodoros hermsi, a soft-bodied tick found in high altitudes in northwestern United States and southwestern Canada. Once bitten by the tick and infected by B. hermsii, episodes of fever alternating with afebrile periods can occur. A case of TBRF in a pregnant host was complicated by Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction requiring critical care. This case emphasizes the importance of maintaining a high index …

In this study the clinical manifestations, laboratory findings, and management of five patients diagnosed with Mediterranean spotted fever (MSF) from southeast of Iran are presented. All patients but one had recent tick-bite histories which were noticeable as black eschars (tache noire). Patients' samples were tested by real-time PCR and serology (IFA). The disease was confirmed by fourfold rising of IgG antibodies against Rickettsia conorii. This is the first report of MSF cases in Iran.
