Imaging separation of neuronal from vascular effects of cocaine on rat cortical brain in vivo.

MRI techniques to study brain function assume coupling between neuronal activity, metabolism and flow. However, recent evidence of physiological uncoupling between neuronal and cerebrovascular events highlights the need for methods to simultaneously measure these three properties. We report a multimodality optical approach that integrates dual-wavelength laser speckle imaging (measures changes in blood flow, blood volume and hemoglobin oxygenation), digital-frequency-ramping optical coherence tomography (images quantitative 3D vascular network) and Rhod(2) fluorescence (images intracellular ca

Malformations of cortical development in patients with midline facial defects and ocular hypertelorism.

OBJECTIVES: We studied the neuroimaging and neurophysiological aspects of 17 patients with midline facial defects with ocular hypertelorism (MFDH). METHODS: The investigation protocol included a previous semistructured questionnaire about family history; gestational, neonatal, and postnatal development; and dysmorphologic and neurologic evaluation. Recognized monogenic disorders and individuals with other well-known conditions were excluded. All patients had high resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with multiplanar reconstruction (MPR) and routine electroencephalograms (EEGs). RESULT

Mutation within TARDBP leads to frontotemporal dementia without motor neuron disease.

It has been recently demonstrated that the 43-kDa transactive response (TAR)-DNA-binding protein (TARDBP) is the neuropathological hallmark … iagnosis of bvFTD (apathetic syndrome) was accomplished by three-year follow-up, and structural and functional neuroimaging. By five-years after onset, extensive electrophysiological investigations excluded subclinical motor neuron disease. In this patient, a single base substitution c.800A>G of TARDBP gene was identified. This mutation, already described as causative of …

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation over frontal eye fields disrupts visually cued auditory attention.

Voluntary eye movements and covert shifts of visual attention activate the same brain regions. Specifically, the intraparietal sulcus and the frontal eye fields (FEF) appear to be involved both with generating voluntary saccades as well with attending to a peripheral spatial location. Furthermore, these regions appear to be required by both tasks--functional disruption of these regions impairs both tasks. Therefore, it appears that the targeting system that allows us to plan saccades is the same system that allows us to covertly track peripheral visual information. Recent neuroimaging studies

The posterior parietal cortex in recognition memory: a neuropsychological study.

Several recent functional neuroimaging studies have reported robust bilateral activation (L>R) in lateral posterior parietal cortex and precuneus during recognition memory retrieval tasks. It has not yet been determined what cognitive processes are represented by those activations. In order to examine whether parietal lobe-based processes are necessary for basic episodic recognition abilities, we tested a group of 17 first-incident CVA patients whose cortical damage included (but was not limited to) extensive unilateral posterior parietal lesions. These patients performed a series of tasks tha…

Neurologic complications of HIV disease and their treatment.

Important new information regarding neurologic complications of HIV disease was presented at the 2007 Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections. In addition to presentations on pathogenesis and treatment of neurologic complications, the conference included findings that have implications for the management of HIV disease outside the nervous system. Key findings included that the distribution of antiretrovirals into the central nervous system may influence the effectiveness of treatment outside this protected compartment; that postponing initiation of therapy until blood CD4+ coun

Lagged covariance structure models for studying functional connectivity in the brain.

Most cognitive processes are supported by large networks of brain regions. To describe the operation of these networks, it is critical to understand how individual areas are functionally connected. Here, we establish a statistical framework for studying effective and functional brain connectivity, using data obtained with a relatively new neuroimaging method, the event-related optical signal (EROS). The novelty of our approach is the use of timing information (in the form of lagged cross-correlations) in interpreting the connections between areas. Interpretation of lagged cross-correlations ex

[Advances in our knowledge of the causation and pathophysiology of reflex epilepsies].

AIMS: In recent years our knowledge of the pathophysiology and aetiology of reflex seizures and epilepsies has advanced significantly due to the contributions made by modern functional neuroimaging and neurophysiology techniques, as well as the findings of research being conducted in molecular biology. The aim of our review is to summarise and integrate these contributions in order to describe the current state of our knowledge on the subject. DEVELOPMENT: The fundamental pathophysiological pattern is common to all types of reflex epilepsy and is based on the existence of a hyperexcitable cor…

Dissociable networks for the expectancy and perception of emotional stimuli in the human brain.

William James posited that comparable brain regions were implicated in the anticipation and perception of a stimulus; however, dissociable networks (at least in part) may also underlie these processes. Recent functional neuroimaging studies have addressed this issue by comparing brain systems associated with the expectancy and perception of visual, tactile, nociceptive, and reward stimuli. In the present fMRI study, we addressed this issue in the domain of pictorial emotional stimuli (IAPS). Our paradigm involved the experimental conditions emotional expectancy, neutral expectancy, emotional p…

Neuroimaging with calibrated FMRI.

The conventional functional MRI (fMRI) map offers information indirectly about localized changes in neuronal activity because it reflects changes in blood oxygenation, not actual neuronal activity. To provide a neurophysiological basis of fMRI, researchers have used electrophysiology to show correlations of fMRI and electric signals. However, quantitative interpretation of the degree to which neuronal activity has changed still cannot be made from conventional fMRI data. The fMRI signal has 2 parts: one describes the correlation between oxidative metabolism (cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen [

Modulation of cerebellar activities by acupuncture stimulation: evidence from fMRI study.

Recent neuroimaging studies have revealed that acupuncture stimulation modulates human central nervous system including cerebral limbic/paralimbic and subcortical structures. Due to the wide and intricate connections with cerebrum, we hypothesized that anatomically specific areas in human cerebellum are also modulated by acupuncture stimulation beyond classical involvement of cerebellum in motor coordination. Functional MRI (fMRI) was used to investigate neural substrates responding to the acupuncture stimulation of Pericardium 6 (PC6, Neiguan), an acupoint relevant for the management of nause

Together with previous functional neuroimaging studies showing a dysfunction of this region, the present findings provide further support for the important role of ACC, which is pivotally involved in attention, emotional regulation, and conditioned fear, in the pathology of PTSD.

Brain areas involved in perception of biological motion.

These experiments use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to reveal neural activity uniquely associated with perception of biological motion. We isolated brain areas activated during the viewing of point-light figures, then compared those areas to regions known to be involved in coherent-motion perception and kinetic-boundary perception. Coherent motion activated a region matching previous reports of human MT/MST complex located on the temporo-parieto-occipital junction. Kinetic boundaries activated a region posterior and adjacent to human MT previously identified as the kinetic-occip

Functional imaging of visual semantic processing in the human brain.

Previous neuroimaging studies have identified a large network of cortical areas involved in semantic processing in the human brain, which includes left occipito-temporal and inferofrontal areas. Most studies, however, investigated exclusively the associative/functional semantic knowledge by using mainly words and/or language related tasks, and this factor may have contributed to the large left hemisphere superiority found in semantic processing and to the controversial involvement of left prefrontal structures. The present study investigates the neural basis of visual objects knowledge, access

HIV-1-Associated Cognitive-Motor Disorders: A Research-Based Approach to Diagnosis and Treatment.

The diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1)-associated cognitive-motor disorder--either minor cognitive-motor disorder (MCMD) or HIV-1-associated dementia (HAD)--is fraught with potential pitfalls for the clinician. Before making such a diagnosis, clinicians should exclude other etiologies by using neuroimaging, lumbar puncture, and serum chemistries to screen for opportunistic and non-opportunistic infections of the brain and meninges. Clinicians should also consider psychoneurotoxicity (caused from the use of psychoactive substances and prescribed medications) and psychopath

Changes in the central nervous system during long-duration space flight: implications for neuro-imaging.

The purpose of this paper is to review the potential functional and morphological effects of long duration space flight on the human central nervous system (CNS) and how current neuroimaging techniques may be utilized to study these effects. It must be determined if there will be any detrimental changes to the CNS from long term exposure to the space environment if human beings are to plan interplanetary missions or establish permanent space habitats. Research to date has focused primarily on the short term changes in the CNS as the result of space flight. The space environment has many factor

Modulation of connectivity in visual pathways by attention: cortical interactions evaluated with structural equation modelling and fMRI.

Electrophysiological and neuroimaging studies have shown that attention to visual motion can increase the responsiveness of the motion-selective cortical area V5 and the posterior parietal cortex (PP). Increased or decreased activation in a cortical area is often attributed to attentional modulation of the cortical projections to that area. This leads to the notion that attention is associated with changes in connectivity. We have addressed attentional modulation of effective connectivity using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Three subjects were scanned under identical stimulus c

Choreoathetosis as an initial sign of relapsing of herpes simplex encephalitis.

Twelve children with type 1 herpes simplex encephalitis (3 with relapse, 9 without) have been monitored during the past 7 years. Ten of the children received intravenous infusion of acyclovir (30 mg/kg/day) for 10 days, 1 child who experienced relapse received 15 mg/kg/day, and another relapsed child received no antiviral agents until relapse. Relapse occurred 20-36 days after initial onset. All relapsed patients underwent another 10 days of acyclovir treatment (30 mg/kg/day). Choreoathetosis appeared as the initial sign of relapse followed by rapidly progressive unresponsiveness in all 3 rela
