Sleep complaints are common in the elderly, and are often related to physiological changes with ageing, or secondary to illness and drug therapy. Primary sleep disorders, such as sleep apnoea and movement disorders, are also common. Management should be specific to the problem. Attention to underlying factors and sleep hygiene, as well as reassurance and education about age-related sleep changes, will often be sufficient. Hypnotics, which usually offer only temporary symptomatic relief, may be counterproductive, and should be prescribed only in the short term, except in limited specific cases.…

The examination covered 143 individuals engaged into production of synthetic foaming and paste-forming detergents, cosmetic and hygienic aerosols. Polls, immunologic surveys and specific allergologic examination revealed that 40% of the subjects had immunologic disorders and allergies, and 72% of this share was occupied by the workers of the aerosol production. Skin allergic diseases were prevalent. The risk factors for allergic diseases could be traced to congenital propensity, joint effects of multiple chemicals. All the employees at placement should undergo specific allergologic examination

Despite vaccines, new antimicrobials, and improved hygienic practices, congenital infections remain an important cause of death and long-term neurologic morbidity among infants world-wide. Important agents include Toxoplasma gondii, cytomegalovirus, Treponema pallidum, herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, and rubella virus. In addition, several other agents, such as the varicella zoster virus, human parvovirus B19, and Borrelia burgdorferi, can potentially infect the fetus and cause adverse fetal outcomes. This article provides an overview of these infectious disorders and outlines current stra

During the last 2 decades, the same coprological techniques for the detection of parasites have been applied by the same team in the parasitology laboratories of the Children's Hospital of Bordeaux. A marked decrease in the prevalence of the most frequently occurring parasites (Giardia and Entamoeba coli cysts, Ascaris and Trichocephale eggs) has been observed. Similar results have also been found in other French parasitology laboratories. This reduction in the parasite infection rate is concomitant with a sustained improvement in public hygiene and the living standards of families. It is also…

An overview is given of investigations concerning the epidemiology of Salmonella, carried out at the National Institute of Public Health and Environmental Hygiene in Bilthoven, The Netherlands, during the last thirty years. It is made clear that Salmonella, because of its ubiquitous occurrence and its large variety in sero- and phage-types, is the organism of choice to study the epidemiological pathways of pathogens between man, animals and the environment. It is demonstrated that these are in fact the pathways of faecal contamination, and therefore have validity for a larger number of bacteri…

Vaginitis is one of the most common complaints of women in the United States today. About 90% of patients with this problem suffer from infection of the vagina caused by Candida, Gardnerella, or Trichomonas. The diagnosis and effective treatment of these common infections depend on accurate identification of the entity, effective specific therapy, and restoration of the normal ecosystem of the vagina. At the same time women should be made aware that not all discharge means infection and that any attempts at self-treatment may only worsen their condition. Proper hygiene habits, dietary control,…

A case of urogenital myiasis caused by Chrysomya bezziana (Diptera: Calliphoridae) was diagnosed in a 76-year old patient who had carcinoma of the rectum. A total of 35 larvae were obtained from ulcers near the external genitalia and urethra opening. Larvae pupated within 1 to 2 days and 6 days later emerged as adult males. These were identified as Chrysomya bezziana. Female flies possibly attracted by the fetid odour, laid eggs in the existing lesions in the urogenital area, the larvae invading and feeding on living tissue. Lack of personal hygiene was the contributing factor for the cause of…

Literature was surveyed concerning the teratological testing of chemicals, to which large numbers of workers are occupationally exposed. They include metals, plastics monomers and additives, solvents, and other organic chemicals. The effective doses used in the studies were compared to the potential exposures in the occupational environment as regulated by hygienic standards. In light of the animal experiments, the TLVs for some organic chemicals, particularly for acrylonitrile, methacrylate esters, styrene, carbon disulfide, chloroform, methylene chloride, toluene and xylene, appeared too hig

This study was carried out in 989 cases of measles attending the communicable diseases clinic. University of Benin Teaching Hospital in the year 1977. It was found that measles is a disease of under 5 years and is more frequent amongst infants. Out of the total cases, a sub-group of children suffering from measles under 6 months of age were followed to their homes to study some of their socio-economic factors. It was observed that multiparity and a higher age group of mothers are probable factors. Poor environmental hygiene and low socio-economic status had a role in the transmission of the di…

Poor oral health knowledge and practices contribute significantly to the high burden of oral diseases, particularly in developing regions. Therefore, it is of interest to assess knowledge, behavior and practices related to oral health and oral lesions among patients attending a dental outpatient department (OPD). Hence, a cross-sectional survey of 500 adults was conducted using a structured questionnaire along with clinical oral examination. Only 38.4% demonstrated adequate knowledge and 31.6% showed positive oral hygiene behaviors, while 23.8% presented with oral mucosal lesions significantly…

Wohlfahrtiimonas chitiniclastica (W. chitiniclastica) is an emerging zoonotic Gram-negative pathogen. Over 40 human infections have been documented worldwide. Poor hygiene conditions and chronic wounds are recognized as high-risk factors for infection. We report a case of W. chitiniclastica infection in a patient with a sprain complicated by type 2 diabetes mellitus. Due to suboptimal glycemic control during the early hospitalization period, the wound progressed to an active infection. This case indicates that W. chitiniclastica may possess virulence capable of causing severe local and systemi…

Myiasis is a human parasitic disease caused by fly larvae that is rarely found in the oral cavity. Poor oral hygiene among older males can lead to intraoral myiasis. This report describes a rare case of severe, atypical pain caused by maxillary periodontal myiasis in an elderly disabled patient. Maggots infested the hard palate near the anterior maxillary teeth. Despite a radiological examination showing no significant hard tissue alterations, numerous maggots were manually extracted from a hole in the anterior hard palate. Surgical tooth extraction and maggot removal were both performed under…

Antihypertensives such as amlodipine, which is a family of calcium channel blockers (CCBs), possess a limitation by causing gingival enlargement on long-term use. Gingival enlargement hinders the patient's oral hygiene maintenance and causes more plaque accumulation and inflammation. The severity of the condition is dependent on dose and duration. When untreated, this leads to functional and esthetic disabilities. This is a case report of amlodipine-induced gingival enlargement in a young, chronic periodontitis patient who was under 5 mg of amlodipine for six months. Upon diagnosis, the patien…

Enteric fever is an endemic disease in developing and low-middle income countries due to poor sanitation and hygiene. The majority of cases have mild symptoms and resolve with oral or intravenous antibiotics. However, multisystemic involvement due to enteric fever requiring intensive care is not uncommon and is associated with high mortality and morbidity. We report a 5-year-old boy from Mohali, Punjab, India with enteric fever who had fulminant course with several complications including transient intussusception, myocardial dysfunction, encephalopathy, and secondary hemophagocytic lymphohist…
