Tuberculosis in Pregnant Women After COVID-19: Features of Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment (Narrative Review).

Tuberculosis remains a serious infectious disease that causes over 1.3 million deaths annually. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the global incidence of tuberculosis has increased to 10.8 million cases. Pregnant women represent a particularly vulnerable population requiring tailored approaches to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of tuberculosis. SARS-CoV-2 infection may have impacted existing clinical protocols. Implementing updated methods of tuberculosis prevention, diagnosis, and treatment in pregnant women could help reduce adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. The aim of this revie

April 15th war and hemodialysis patients in Sudan: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: On April 15th, 2023, intense clashes involving heavy weapons and airstrikes occurred between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, leading to the displacement of almost 8.1 million people. The ongoing armed conflict in Sudan has led to a worsening humanitarian catastrophe, posing serious challenges to the country's health-care system and even its collapse. Healthcare facilities have been severely affected, with barely one-third of hospitals operating in conflict zones. Hemodialysis patients are among the m

Global perspectives on challenges, coping strategies, and future preparedness of nursing home staff during COVID-19: a systematic review and meta-synthesis.

BACKGROUND: The global public health crisis caused by COVID-19 in late 2019 was unprecedented. Due to their vulnerable population, nursing homes are a key epidemic response area. This study described the challenges and coping strategies of nursing home staff during COVID-19 and proposed recommendations for future public health crises in nursing homes. METHOD: A meta-synthesis was performed to address the research question: What are the experiences of nursing home staff from the perspectives of COVID-19? From the beginning until August 31, 2024, searches were conducted in five international da

Investigating the effect of guided self-help through social networks on post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms and resilience of mothers with children suffering from febrile seizures.

BACKGROUND: Seizure caused by fever is the most common seizure disorder in childhood, which occurs in children between 6 months and 5 years, with a temperature above 38 degrees Celsius. Mothers as primary caregivers are more involved in this challenge. Most of them do not have enough knowledge about this disease, and some of them suffer from post-traumatic stress symptoms due to seizures in their children, such as avoiding situations reminiscent of seizures, disturbing thoughts and symptoms of hyperarousal, and symptoms of loss of resilience, such as lack of personal competence, inability to s

Thirty-day unplanned readmission rates and risk factors in spine surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Despite the rise in the incidence of spinal disorders due to the global aging population, advances in surgical techniques and perioperative care have led to an increase in the number of spinal surgeries. However, postoperative complications remain difficult to prevent completely, and the rate of unplanned readmissions within 30 days varies greatly and increases the burden on medical care. This study aims to integrate existing research data through meta-analysis to systematically assess the incidence and risk factors of unplanned readmission within 30 days in patients undergoing spina

Boosting Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Rates: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial of Awareness Interventions in Réunion Island.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection worldwide and imposes a significant public health burden. In 2019, HPV was responsible for approximately 620,000 cancer cases in women, 70,000 in men, and more than 300,000 deaths globally. Despite the proven efficacy of the vaccine, vaccination rates remain alarmingly low in certain regions of France. In Réunion Island, only 16% of girls and 9% of boys under 16 years old were fully vaccinated in 2024. This underscores the need for increased awareness, education, and outreach programs. Peer learning is wel

First-line treatment of extensive-stage small cell lung cancer with immune checkpoint inhibitors acting on different targets: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Incorporating immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) into the platinum and etoposide regimen for extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC) has been established as the standard of care for first-line treatment. Currently, there is still no network meta-analysis (NMA) to evaluate the differences in efficacy and safety between ICIs targeting cytotoxic T-lymphocyte associated protein 4 (CTLA-4), programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1), or programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-L1). This Bayesian NMA aims to evaluate the differences in efficacy and safety among ICIs targeting CTLA-4, PD-

Intervention studies with group design targeting expressive phonology for children with developmental speech and language disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Phonological difficulties are prevalent in children with speech and/or language disorders and may hamper their later language outcomes and academic achievements. These children often form a significant proportion of speech and language therapists' caseloads. There is a shortage of information on evidence-based interventions for improving phonological skills in children and adolescents with speech and language disorder. AIMS: The aim of this systematic literature review and meta-analysis was to systematically examine the effects of different intervention approaches on speech produc

The role of parent-adolescent communication interventions in improving sexual and reproductive health outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Across sub-Saharan Africa, adolescents face the triple tragedy: unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortion, and sexually transmitted infections including HIV due to various reasons, among them, poor parent-adolescent communication on sexual and reproductive health. Effective interventions such as improving parent‒adolescent communication has been recognized as a protective factor for adolescent sexual and reproductive health outcomes. Research shows that parent-adolescent communication is associated with reduced adolescent engagement in risky sexual behaviours, including early sexual

The Effects of Strength, Plyometric and Combined Training on Strength, Power and Speed Characteristics in High-Level, Highly Trained Male Youth Soccer Players: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Male youth soccer players competing at a high level will typically engage in large volumes of soccer training from a young age. However, it is not known whether the high levels of habitual training that these high-performing players are exposed to limit their ability to respond to strength, plyometric or combined training interventions. OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of our systematic review and meta-analysis was to compare the specific effects of strength, plyometric and combined training with active controls (standard soccer training) on the strength, power and speed characteristics

Machine learning-based automated sponge cytology for screening of oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma of the oesophagogastric junction: a nationwide, multicohort, prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma of the oesophagogastric junction have a dismal prognosis, and early detection is key to reduce mortality. However, early detection depends on upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, which is not feasible to implement at a population level. We aimed to develop and validate a fully automated machine learning-based prediction tool integrating a minimally invasive sponge cytology test and epidemiological risk factors for screening of oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma of the oesophagogastric junction before endoscopy.

Exploring the Applicability of Using Natural Language Processing to Support Nationwide Venous Thromboembolism Surveillance: Model Evaluation Study.

BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a preventable, common vascular disease that has been estimated to affect up to 900,000 people per year. It has been associated with risk factors such as recent surgery, cancer, and hospitalization. VTE surveillance for patient management and safety can be improved via natural language processing (NLP). NLP tools have the ability to access electronic medical records, identify patients that meet the VTE case definition, and subsequently enter the relevant information into a database for hospital review. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the performance

The prevalence, risk factors and outcomes of anaemia in South African pregnant women: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: A significant cause of morbidity and mortality during pregnancy is maternal anaemia. The causes of anaemia and the sequelae are varied, and the prevention and management are public health challenges, especially in resource-limited settings and certain geographic locations. South Africa is plagued by a quadruple burden of disease, with high maternal mortality rates affected by hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, HIV, tuberculosis and neglected tropical diseases. This is most prevalent in people of lower socio-economic status. Poor nutrition, chronic infections, lack of access to he

Innovative telementoring for addiction management for remote primary care physicians: A feasibility study.

OBJECTIVE: Addiction is a growing public health problem which affects the person, the whole family, and society. The primary care physician (PCP) is often the first point of contact in the health care and can play a significant role in the early detection and intervention. It is well established that early intervention is associated with better outcomes. In the formal medical training, PCPs receive no formal training on drug addiction management. In this pilot study, we developed an innovative telementoring model and looked at feasibility as well as acceptability among remote PCPs on drug addi

A novel antifouling technique for the crossflow filtration using porous membranes: Experimental and CFD investigations of the periodic feed pressure technique.

Oily water production is one of the many drawbacks of petroleum and several other industries. Finding effective ways for the treatment of produced water remain one of the main areas of interest in membrane sciences. Albeit the many advantages of membrane technology, they suffer from the unavoidable problem of fouling, which results from the accumulation of dispersed materials at the surface of membranes. Membrane modification and operational optimization have been approached as a potential cure of the problem of fouling. In this work we introduce a new and novel method that minimizes the devel

Strategies to increase immunization coverage of tetanus vaccine among women in Sub Saharan Africa: a systematic review.

World Health Organization (WHO) estimated in 2013 that 49,000 deaths all over the world were caused by neonatal tetanus. Only as recently as the year 2000, neonatal tetanus was a public health problem in 59 countries, but since then it has been eliminated in 36 of the countries concerned. The objective of this piece of work, therefore, was to investigate which strategies intended to increase demand for vaccination are effective in increasing anti-tetanus vaccination coverage of women in Sub Saharan Africa. We searched the following electronic databases from January 1989 to July 2016: Medline,
