Iron supplementation is ubiquitously prescribed and considered a benign means of therapy. However, side effects such as iron pill gastritis can be life threatening prompting discontinuation. We describe a case of a 71-year-old man who presents with severe iron deficiency anemia on oral iron therapy. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed mucosal injury in the fundus, including erythema and ulceration. Biopsy of the area was significant for pill debris. Anemia is a frequent complication of kidney disease. When severe, it causes symptoms that can be debilitating. The course of anemia tends to track the decline in kidney function, with prevalence increasing in more advanced disease. Although the most common cause is relative erythropoietin deficiency, other factors such as reduced iron availability contribute to the pathobiology. In this review, we use cases to explore the surprising complexity of decision-making in management of renal anemia.

The iron content in different parts of eight plants traditionally used to treat anaemia in Eastern Africa was determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Extracts were made of plant samples using both wet and dry oxidation procedures. Results obtained from both procedures agree significantly and the average of both methods was taken as the iron content in each plant part. Iron supplementation is frequently used in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia in the pediatric population. We describe a case of an 11-year old male who developed adverse side effects following treatment with oral ferrous sulfate tablets for 2 months. The diagnosis was made following findings of iron deposition on histology obtained during endoscopy. The iron supplementation was changed from tablet to liquid form, and repeat endoscopy 4 months following initial diagnosis showed resolution of the histologic findings of iron pill-induced gastritis.

TMPRSS6 is a serine protease highly expressed in the liver. OBJECTIVE: To understand the role of iron fortified soy sauce( IFSS) on the decrease of anemia prevalence in Chinese population in 2004- 2013.
METHODS: Meta analysis was used to analyze the effect of IFSS on anemia through published randomcontrol studies on the population intervention with IFSS.
