Highly branched ultrathin Pt-Ru nanodendrites (NDs) with an average thickness of ∼1.8 nm and controlled elemental ratios were prepared through nanoconfined and epitaxial growth inside lamellar micelles of designed surfactants. The elemental compositions could be easily extended to other metals (Pt-M, M = Rh, Co, Fe, Ag, etc.). Owing to their synergistically structural and compositional advantages, Pt-Ru NDs with a specific atomic ratio (specifically Pt90Ru10) showed enhanced electrocatalytic activity and stability toward the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) under alkaline conditions.

A C2-symmeric binaphthyl framework bearing phenanthrene as the emitter exhibited circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) in dilute solutions. The CPL and circular dichroism signs of the luminophores were altered by solvents (chloroform, methanol, acetonitrile, and dimethylformamide). DFT and TD-DFT calculations indicated that the dihedral angle between the phenanthrene and naphthyl rings was responsible for the apparent sign inversion. The role of solvent molecules in the ground and photoexcited states was discussed based on Hansen solubility parameters (δ, δd, δp and δh).

Investigating metabolic changes during different organismal or cellular states is of increasing interest. The combination of a data-rich analytical method like mass spectrometry or NMR spectroscopy with a statistical analysis identifies metabolites that are affected by a certain stimulus. Thus, important information on the underlying molecular pathways can be obtained. Here, we describe how to investigate metabolic changes in a model of oncogene-induced senescence. The water-soluble metabolites are isolated by a chloroform-methanol treatment and subsequently analyzed by NMR spectroscopy.

[reaction: see text] A new capture-ROMP-release method for chromatography-free purification of N-hydroxysuccinimde Mitsunobu reactions is described. The Mitsunobu reaction captures a variety of alcohols onto a norbornenyl N-hydroxysuccinimide monomer. Subjection of the resulting crude reaction mixture to ROM-polymerization generates a polymer that can be precipitated with methanol and filtered from the Mitsunobu byproducts. Treatment of the polymer with hydrazine releases the substrate from the water-soluble polymer, producing a variety of O-alkylhydroxylamines with good purity.

Photoirradiation of solutions of natural (4Z,15Z)-bilirubin-IX alpha in chloroform with approximately 366 nm UV light leads rapidly to a new photoisomer that has been characterized by NMR spectroscopy and by its (ground-state reaction) adducts with methanol and other protic nucleophiles. The effects of Senkyu (Cnidii Rhizoma and Ligustici chuanxiong Rhizoma) on the drug skin penetration were studied to clarify its effectivity as the baths. Ether and methanol extracts, and some essential oils of Senkyu (i.e. ligustilide, neocnidilide and butylidenephthalide) enhanced remarkably the skin penetration of benzoic acid. Furthermore, an appreciable correlation between the enhancing ratio and the skin/donor partition coefficient of benzoic acid was observed. These facts suggest that the constituents of Senkyu influence the skin penetration by enhancing the partition coefficient.
