Heartworm disease in animals and humans.

Heartworm disease due to Dirofilaria immitis continues to cause severe disease and even death in dogs and other animals in many parts of the world, even though safe, highly effective and convenient preventatives have been available for the past two decades. Moreover, the parasite and vector mosquitoes continue to spread into areas where they have not been reported previously. Heartworm societies have been established in the USA and Japan and the First European Dirofilaria Days (FEDD) Conference was held in Zagreb, Croatia, in February of 2007. These organizations promote awareness, encourage r

Intensive early season adulticide applications decrease arbovirus transmission throughout the Coachella Valley, Riverside County, California.

In the Coachella Valley of California the seasonal onset of St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV), western equine encephalomyelitis virus (WEEV), and West Nile virus (WNV) has been detected consistently at the shoreline of the Salton Sea near the community of North Shore. The timing and intensity of initial amplification in the Culex tarsalis Coquillett/wild bird cycle at this focus seemed closely linked to the subsequent dispersal of virus to the rest of the Coachella Valley and perhaps southern California. In 2004, an attempt was made to interrupt the amplification and dispersal of WNV using g

Non-adherence to community directed treatment with ivermectin for onchocerciasis control in Rungwe district, southwest Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Community directed treatment with ivermectin (CDTI) for onchocerciasis control was developed as a strategy for achieving sustained high coverage in endemic communities. This strategy for over a short period of time has radically altered the consequences of infection with Onchocerca volvulus. The present challenge is maintaining the high therapeutic coverage especially in some of the impoverished endemic countries. One of these challenges is non-adherence to ivermectin treatment and this provides compelling reason for data collection at community level. OBJECTIVE: To describe the f

Unstable, low-level transmission of malaria on the Colombian Pacific Coast.

The development of immune responses to malarial infection in inhabitants of endemic areas differs according to the level of exposure to the parasite. Adults living in a region where the level of malaria transmission is low (Colombia) have been shown to exhibit a similar response to each of the three regions of the circumsporozoite protein (the central repeated NANP region, and the flanking N- and C-termini). Conversely, donors exposed to a frequent sporozoite challenge in areas of high malaria transmission (Mali) exhibit antibodies predominantly to the NANP repeated domain. Malaria in the peop

Wuchereria bancrofti microfilarial density of autochthonous cases and natural Culex infectivity rates in northeast Brazil.

Autochthonous Wuchereria bancrofti microfilaraemic cases from three neighbouring cities of Northeast Brazil (Recife, Jaboatao and Olinda) were selected from thick smear or filtration positive individuals and classified by their microfilarial (mf) densities through polycarbonate membrane blood filtration. Individuals were subdivided into two groups: autochthonous cases without any previous specific drug administrations (group A) and those with one or more previous DEC treatments (group B). In Recife, unlike Jaboatao and Olinda (P less than 0.05), the majority of autochthonous cases were over 20

Arboviral diseases and malaria in Australia, 2011-12: annual report of the National Arbovirus and Malaria Advisory Committee.

The National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System received notifications for 7,875 cases of disease transmitted by mosquitoes during the 2011-12 season (1 July 2011 to 30 June 2012). The alphaviruses Barmah Forest virus and Ross River virus accounted for 6,036 (77%) of these. There were 18 notifications of dengue virus infection acquired in Australia and 1,390 cases that were acquired overseas, while for 38 cases, the place of acquisition was unknown. Imported cases of dengue in Australia were most frequently acquired in Indonesia. There were 20 imported cases of chikungunya virus. There we

Malaria indicator survey 2007, Ethiopia: coverage and use of major malaria prevention and control interventions.

BACKGROUND: In 2005, a nationwide survey estimated that 6.5% of households in Ethiopia owned an insecticide-treated net (ITN), 17% of households had been sprayed with insecticide, and 4% of children under five years of age with a fever were taking an anti-malarial drug. Similar to other sub-Saharan African countries scaling-up malaria interventions, the Government of Ethiopia set an ambitious national goal in 2005 to (i) provide 100% ITN coverage in malarious areas, with a mean of two ITNs per household; (ii) to scale-up indoor residual spraying of households with insecticide (IRS) to cover 30

[A history of Malaria from and for a popular point of view].

The author outlines parasitologic features of human plasmodia and Anopheles, the public health and human aspects of this protozoan infection. Starting from the etymology of the words "mal' aria," the author describes a brief but proven history of social importance, dwelling not only on the clinical, medical or scientific aspects. In other words, the author dwells upon the literary, the customary, as well as on the historic and cultural aspects, with special attention to the significance of the popular importance of this problem in Italy.

Epidemiology of malaria in the Torres Strait Islands, Australia, 2000-2025 and the public health response to three recent outbreaks.

BACKGROUND: Australia was declared malaria free in 1981. However, the proximity of Australia's Torres Strait region to malaria-endemic Papua New Guinea (PNG), and the presence of the Anopheles mosquito across Northern Australia, means there is an ongoing risk of malaria for many Australian residents. This paper describes the epidemiology of malaria in the Torres Strait region between 2000 and 2025 and reports the public health response to three malaria outbreaks between 2023 and 2025. METHODS: Case data from 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2025 were extracted from the Queensland Notifiable Cond

Contrasting egg-laying, adult abundance and genetics of the dengue vector Aedes aegypti in two ecologically distinct regions in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti is widely distributed in the tropics and sub-tropics and is a major vector of several arboviruses, such as dengue and chikungunya viruses. Mapping the behavioral and genetic divergence among the mosquito populations can enhance our understanding of spatiotemporal variation in disease transmission. METHODS: Cross-sectional surveys were carried out between 2022 and 2023 to investigate egg-laying abundance in ovitraps as well as adult abundance in BG Sentinel traps baited with carbon dioxide. Both trap types were deployed in outdoor environments in two peri-urban areas

Invertebrate Automated Phenotyping Platform (INVAPP): An Automated High-Throughput System with Applications in Understanding and Combating Human Diseases.

The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is a eukaryotic genetic model organism introduced for studies of animal development and behavior (Brenner S, Genetics 77:71-94, 1974). It is also proving useful to expedite our understanding of human diseases and to explore potential therapies (Ahringer J, Curr Opin Genet Dev 7:410-415, 1997; Culetto E, Sattelle DB, Hum Mol Genet 9:869-877, 2000). Monitoring phenotypic changes and the impact of drug candidates is particularly convenient in the case of C. elegans models of neuromuscular or neurological disorders, where changes in motility and growth are often

What does monkey malaria mean to you? A participatory photovoice study in rural Malaysian Borneo.

BACKGROUND: Zoonotic (monkey) malaria, caused by Plasmodium knowlesi, is an escalating concern in Sabah, Malaysia, where humans, macaques and mosquito vectors share overlapping ecosystems. Conventional research methods often overlook how affected communities perceive and respond to this risk within their cultural and environmental contexts. This study uses photovoice, a participatory visual method to explore the question 'What does monkey malaria mean to you? and to elevate community voices in guiding locally relevant disease prevention strategies. METHODS: From January to May 2024, twenty pa

Stirred tank bioreactor process for chikungunya vaccine candidate VEEV-ΔC-CHIKV.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), a mosquito-borne alphavirus with significant public health impact, has caused recurrent epidemics across Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Despite the recent approval of a live-attenuated vaccine (Chix), scalable manufacturing processes for CHIKV vaccines remain critical to meet global demand. In this context, we previously constructed a chimeric virus, VEEV-ΔC-CHIKV, by replacing the backbone of ΔC-CHIKV with that of the VEEV replicon while retaining the CHIKV antigenic glycoprotein (E3-E2-6K-E1). A series of experiments have demonstrated that the chimeric virus exhib

Economic evaluation of Wolbachia deployment in Colombia: A modeling study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Wolbachia are bacteria that inhibit dengue virus replication within the mosquito. A cluster-randomized trial in Indonesia found Wolbachia reduced virologically-confirmed dengue cases by 77.1%. Previous models predicted Wolbachia to be highly cost-effective in Indonesia, Vietnam, and Brazil. To inform decisions about future extensions in Colombia, we performed economic evaluations of potential Wolbachia deployments in 11 target cities. METHODS: We assembled the numbers and distribution by severity of reported dengue cases from Colombia's national disease surveillance syste

Climate Change: A Major Factor in the Spread of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) and Its Associated Dengue Virus.

Climate change is thought to be responsible for the spread of various vector-borne diseases. The current study was conducted to evaluate the impact of different temperature and relative humidity regimes on the developmental stages of the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae). The study also evaluated the impact of larval density on the survival of Ae. aegypti. In addition, the association between vector larval abundance, dengue incidence, and climatic factors were elucidated during 2016-2019 in three populated districts of Punjab, Pakistan, i.e., Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Mul
