In an attempt to validate recent assertions that the strongest indicators of hysteria are the "positive" findings in the neurological examin … explanations for their illness are most liable to be misdiagnosed. Certain disorders, particularly movement disorders and paralysis, are most often mislabeled as hysteria. A diagnosis of hysteria must be made with great caution as it so often proves incorrect.

We reviewed the records of 756 consecutive newborns autopsied over a 10-yr period. Using published standards for normal lung weights, low lung weight for total body weight was determined to be a reasonable estimate of pulmonary hypoplasia. Seventy-seven infants with pulmonary hypoplasia were identified. Multiple congenital malformation syndromes were found in the majority of infants with pulmonary hypoplasia. These included major diaphragmatic anomalies, renal anomalies, chromosomal disorders, extralobar pulmonary sequestration, severe musculoskeletal disorders, and isolated right-sided cardia

The first skills are motor ones and these depend on perceptual development and the organisation of movement. If development is deviant the child will be clumsy. The clinical picture is considered, and the effects this may have in the school situation. Disorders of language development may be secondary to other factors such as deafness or brain injury, or may be a specific disability. The various grades of the latter are described. Both perceptual and language disorders can underlie reading retardation and the analysis of a particular child's difficulties is stressed. The etiology of these cond

Tic disorders (TD) present considerable challenges in research due to their intricate and multifaceted nature. Their primary symptoms, tics, often co-occur with other comorbid conditions that overlap with other psychiatric and movement disorders. Tic development and expression are associated with alterations in different neurotransmitter systems, genetic factors, and environmental influences. However, the current understanding regarding the underlying causes and mechanism remains limited, with the available treatments lacking specificity and efficacy. To address these complexities, numerous an…

Parasomnias, from the Greek "para" (around) and the Latin "somnus" (sleep), refer to manifestations that occur in relation to sleep: whether at the onset, during its course, or upon waking. They constitute up to a third of consultations. These events are striking and often bothersome, both for those who experience them and for those who observe them. They involve motor, cardiovascular, or other manifestations, generating fear and/or anxiety when witnessed. Some parasomnias show a familial pattern or are associated with neurodevelopmental disorders, appearing in relation to triggers such as feb

This study evaluates the utility of OpenCap (v0.3), a smartphone-based motion capture system, for performing gait analysis in patients with neurological disorders. We compared kinematic and kinetic gait parameters between 10 healthy controls and 10 patients with neurological conditions, including stroke, Parkinson's disease, and cerebral palsy. OpenCap captured 3D movement dynamics using two smartphones, with data processed through musculoskeletal modeling. The key findings indicate that the patient group exhibited significantly slower gait speeds (0.67 m/s vs. 1.10 m/s, p = 0.002), shorter st

Biomarker discovery and implementation are at the forefront of the precision medicine movement. Modern advances in the field of metabolomics afford the opportunity to readily identify new metabolite biomarkers across a wide array of disciplines. Many of the metabolites are derived from or directly reflective of mitochondrial metabolism. L-carnitine and acylcarnitines are established mitochondrial biomarkers used to screen neonates for a series of genetic disorders affecting fatty acid oxidation, known as the inborn errors of metabolism. However, L-carnitine and acylcarnitines are not routinely

Millions of patients worldwide suffer from gastrointestinal (GI) motility disorders such as gastroparesis. These disorders typically include debilitating symptoms, such as chronic nausea and vomiting. As no cures are currently available, clinical care is limited to symptom management, while the underlying causes of impaired GI motility remain unaddressed. The efficient movement of contents through the GI tract is facilitated by peristalsis. These rhythmic slow waves of GI muscle contraction are mediated by several cell types, including smooth muscle cells, enteric neurons, telocytes, and speci

Huntington's disease (HD) is characterised by movement disorders, cognitive impairments, and psychiatric problems. The abnormal generation of reactive oxygen species and the resulting oxidative stress-induced mitochondrial damage in neurons upon CAG mutations in the HTT gene have been hypothesized as the contributing factors of neurodegeneration in HD. The potential use of antioxidants against free radical toxicity has been an emerging field in the management of ageing and many neurodegenerative disorders. Neural stem cells derived adult neurogenesis represents the regenerative capacity of the…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The field of neuro-otology has advanced substantially over the past 150 years. The function of the vestibular system was presumed to be audiologic prior to the groundbreaking work of Prosper Ménière in the late 1800s. Since that time, scientific discovery has advanced our knowledge of the physiology and the pathophysiology of the vestibular system. This article describes where we have been, where we are now, and where we need to go from here.
RECENT FINDINGS: Some of the important recent advances include: (1) improved imaging of the brain and inner ear, (2) development of n

Recently, alpha-synuclein was shown to be a structural component of the filaments in Lewy bodies (LBs) of Parkinson's disease (PD), dementia with LBs (DLB) as well as the LB variant of Alzheimer's disease, and this suggests that alpha-synuclein could play a mechanistic role in the pathogenesis of these disorders. To determine whether alpha-synuclein is a building block of inclusions in other neurodegenerative movement disorders, we examined brains from patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA) and detected alpha-synuclein, but not beta- or gamma-synuclein, in glial cytoplasmic inclusions (GC…

Tremor is a movement disorder that significantly impacts an individual's physical stability and quality of life, and conventional medication or surgery often falls short in providing a cure. Rehabilitation training is, therefore, used as an auxiliary method to mitigate the exacerbation of individual tremors. Video-based rehabilitation training is a form of therapy that allows patients to exercise at home, reducing pressure on rehabilitation institutions' resources. However, it has limitations in directly guiding and monitoring patients' rehabilitation, leading to an ineffective training effect

INTRODUCTION: The psychomotor disturbance is a common symptom in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). The neurological mechanisms of psychomotor disturbance are intricate, involving alterations in the structure and function of motor-related regions. However, the relationship among changes in the spontaneous activity, motor-related activity, local cortical thickness, and psychomotor function remains unclear.
METHOD: A total of 140 patients with MDD and 68 healthy controls performed a simple right-hand visuomotor task during magnetoencephalography (MEG) scanning. All patients were div

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease is an autosomal dominant inherited disorder characterized by personality changes (such as irritability and restlessness) and psychotic symptoms (such as hallucinations and delusions). When the personality changes become noticeable, involuntary movements (chorea) also develop. The disease is caused by the CAG repeat expansion in the coding region of the HTT gene, and the diagnosis is based on the presence of this expansion. However, there is currently no effective treatment for the progression of Huntington's disease and its involuntary motor symptoms. Herein, w

BACKGROUND: The "Assessment of Motor Repertoire-3 to 5 Months", which is a part of Prechtl's General Movements Assessment (GMA), has been gradually applied to infants with genetic metabolic disorders. However, there have been no studies on the application of the GMA for infants with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS).
AIMS: The purpose of this study was to determine the inter- and intra-observer reliability of the assessment tool in a population of infants with PWS.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a reliability and agreement study.
SUBJECTS: This was a cross-sectional study with15 infants with PWS born at

Isolated generalized dystonia is a central motor network disorder characterized by twisted movements or postures. The most frequent genetic cause is a GAG deletion in the Tor1a (DYT1) gene encoding torsinA with a reduced penetrance of 30-40 % suggesting additional genetic or environmental modifiers. Development of dystonia-like movements after a standardized peripheral nerve crush lesion in wild type (wt) and Tor1a+/- mice, that express 50 % torsinA only, was assessed by scoring of hindlimb movements during tail suspension, by rotarod testing and by computer-assisted gait analysis. Progressive cell loss is observed in the striatum, cerebral cortex, thalamus, hypothalamus, subthalamic nucleus and hippocampus in Huntington disease. In the striatum, dopamine-responsive medium spiny neurons are preferentially lost. Clinical features include involuntary movements, gait and orofacial impairments in addition to cognitive deficits and psychosis, anxiety and mood disorders. We utilized the Cre-LoxP system to generate mutant mice with selective postnatal ablation of D1 dopamine receptor-expressing striatal neurons to determine which elements of the complex Huntington disease pheno
