Feeling unreal: a PET study of depersonalization disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to assess brain glucose metabolism and its relationship to dissociation measures and clinical symptoms in DSM-IV depersonalization disorder. METHOD: Positron emission tomography scans coregistered with magnetic resonance images of eight subjects with depersonalization disorder were compared to those of 24 healthy comparison subjects. The two groups did not differ in age, sex, education, performance on a baseline neuropsychological battery, or performance on a verbal learning task administered during [(18)F]fluorodeoxyglucose uptake. A cortical analysis by

Tracing cranial nerve pathways (glossopharyngeal, vagus, and hypoglossal) in SIDS and control infants: a DiI study.

It has been proposed that Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) might occur as a consequence of a developmental deficit associated with the cardiorespiratory and arousal control centers located within the brainstem. In this study 1.1' dioctadecyl-3,3,3',3-tetramethylindocarbocyanine perchlorate (DiI) was used to investigate the trajectories of the glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves which carry essential afferent and efferent fiber tracts associated with cardiac and respiratory control and of the hypoglossal nerve which innervates the tongue, in SIDS (n = 14) and control (n = 7) infants. The postn

Bilateral distribution of vagal motor and sensory nerve fibers in the rat's lungs and airways.

This study combined single and transneuronal labeling to define the origin of midline-crossing vagal fibers projecting to the rat's lungs. Injections of the beta-subunit of cholera toxin (CT-beta) into the lungs labeled similar numbers of neuronal somata in the nucleus ambiguus and dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus on both sides of the medulla, even though vagal stimulation increased lung resistance 50% less in the contralateral than in the ipsilateral lung. Unilateral cervical vagotomy prevented CT-beta labeling of ipsilateral neuronal somata and sensory fibers, indicating that lung-bound vag

Why can't you tickle yourself?

It is well known that you cannot tickle yourself. Here, we discuss the proposal that such attenuation of self-produced tactile stimulation is due to the sensory predictions made by an internal forward model of the motor system. A forward model predicts the sensory consequences of a movement based on the motor command. When a movement is self-produced, its sensory consequences can be accurately predicted, and this prediction can be used to attenuate the sensory effects of the movement. Studies are reviewed that demonstrate that as the discrepancy between predicted and actual sensory feedback in

Cellular mosaics in the rat marginal zone define an early neocortical territorialization.

We describe a novel neuronal group of the neocortical primordium that is formed by the pioneer neurons, unlike the Cajal-Retzius cells and the subplate component of the preplate. These pioneer neurons of the preplate and the marginal zone send transient axonal projections into the nascent internal capsule, preceding the formation of the axonal projection from the subplate neurons. In wholemount preparations, the pioneer neurons of the preplate and the marginal zone cover the prospective neocortical territory from embryonic day (E) 12 to E17. Two subpopulations of pioneer neurons (defined by di

Cortical regions contributing to the anterior commissure in man.

The human anterior commissure is believed, by extrapolation from data obtained in macaque monkeys, to convey axons from the temporal and orbitofrontal cortex. Reports of interhemispheric transfer and sexual dimorphism related to the anterior commissure, however, make more precise data on the human anterior commissure desirable. We investigated the connectivity of the human anterior commissure in six adults (male and female) that had circumscribed hemispheric lesions in temporal, frontal, parietal or occipital cortices or in infrapallidal white matter using the Nauta for anterogradely degenerat

Auditory hallucinations: phenomenology, neuropsychology and neuroimaging update.

Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) are a cardinal feature of psychosis. Recent research is reviewed which has attempted to advance our knowledge of the mechanisms underlying this symptom. Phenomenological surveys have confirmed the importance of the content of such hallucinations and their meaning to the voice-hearer. Psychological and neuroimaging studies of inner speech and source monitoring have provided a neuropsychological framework for AVHs as well as some novel therapeutic strategies. There have also been successful attempts to 'capture' neural activity coincident with the experience

Neuronal projections from the mesencephalic raphe nuclear complex to the suprachiasmatic nucleus and the deep pineal gland of the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus).

Neuronal projections from the mesencephalic raphe system to the suprachiasmatic nucleus and the pineal complex were mapped in this study of the golden hamster, by use of the anterograde tracer Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin and the retrograde tracer cholera toxin subunit B. From the median raphe nucleus, a rostral projection ascended in the ventral part of the mesencephalon to continue in the medial forebrain bundle of the forebrain. Nerve fibres from this bundle innervated the ventral and medial parts of the suprachiasmatic nucleus. At the level of the interpeduncular nucleus of the mesen

The midbrain dopaminergic cell groups in the baboon Papio ursinus.

The present study evaluates the cytoarchitecture of midbrain dopaminergic regions in baboons using similar methodology to that recently applied to compare humans and rats. This information is relevant for the interpretation of nonhuman primate models of Parkinson's disease (PD). The midbrains of four alpha male baboons were serially sectioned into 10 evenly spaced series of 50 microm sections. Series were stained with either cresyl violet or immunohistochemically reacted for tyrosine hydroxylase, substance P, calbindin-D28k, or parvalbumin. The organization of dopaminergic cell groups and the

Neural structures associated with recognition of facial expressions of basic emotions.

People with Huntington's disease and people suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder show severe deficits in recognizing facial expressions of disgust, whereas people with lesions restricted to the amygdala are especially impaired in recognizing facial expressions of fear. This double dissociation implies that recognition of certain basic emotions may be associated with distinct and non-overlapping neural substrates. Some authors, however, emphasize the general importance of the ventral parts of the frontal cortex in emotion recognition, regardless of the emotion being recognized. In this

Autonomic brainstem projections to the pancreas: a retrograde transneuronal viral tracing study in the rat.

The present study describes brainstem nuclei that participate in the autonomic innervation of the pancreas, using a retrograde viral transneuronal tracing technique. It aimed at identifying the neuronal architecture of the parasympathetic, gustatory-induced insulin release by the endocrine pancreas (preabsorptive insulin response, PIR). Autonomic pathways organized for reflex adjustments of the end organ, as it happens in the PIR, involve relatively simple circuits. This implies a short brainstem circuit from the rostral gustatory nucleus of the solitary tract to the dorsal motor nucleus of th

Familial and developmental abnormalities of front lobe function and neurochemistry in schizophrenia.

structural abnormalities of the cerebral cortex in schizophrenia have been revealed by magnetic resonance imaging, although it is not clear whether these abnormalities are diffuse or local. We predicted that changes in cortical structure would result in abnormalities in biochemical markers for the glutamate system in post-mortem brain, and that the pattern of neurochemical abnormalities would be a clue to the distribution and extent of pathology. A number of studies have now reported increases in biochemical and other markers of glutamatergic cell bodies and terminals in the frontal cortex in

Expression of extracellular matrix molecules and cell surface molecules in the olfactory nerve pathway during early development.

The spatial and temporal expression patterns of several extracellular matrix molecules--laminin and fibronectin and cell surface molecules, neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM), L1, tenascin, chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan, and peanut agglutinin (PNA) binding sites--were investigated during early olfactory nerve development. NCAM and L1 have similar patterns: They are expressed in the olfactory nerve and on the olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) commencing with the earliest olfactory axon outgrowth (E12-E15). Their expression patterns suggest that both NCAM and L1 are associated with extensio

Cortical areas within the lateral sulcus connected to cutaneous representations in areas 3b and 1: a revised interpretation of the second somatosensory area in macaque monkeys.

Cortical connections between various body representations in areas 3b and 1 and lateral parietal cortex were examined in 18 macaque monkeys. We injected tracers (Fast Blue, Diamidino Yellow, Horseradish Peroxidase, and Rhodamine Dextran), alone or in combination, into closely related cutaneous responsive sites, e.g., adjacent digits. Separated patches of labeling were found across the parietal operculum and insula for all injected locations. On the basis of cytoarchitectural criteria, the labeled regions include the second somatosensory area (SII), retroinsular area (Ri) and granular insula (I

Straying phenomenon of migrating LHRH neurons and highly polysialylated NCAM in the chick embryo.

The present study on unilaterally incompletely placodectomized chick embryos revealed that arrival of migrating LHRH neurons into the forebrain area is dependent on the presence of a central projection of the olfactory nerve. When a fragment of the lateral and medial olfactory epithelium was spared the damage, a small number of LHRH-ir cells were found to migrate into the forebrain along a thin NCAM-H-expressing fiber bundle of the olfactory nerve. In embryos with large lesions which destroyed the lateral olfactory epithelium, the poorly developed NCAM-H-positive olfactory nerve fibers were ar

Deficits in the function of small and large afferent fibers in confirmed cases of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Nerve conduction studies and measurements of thermal thresholds (hot and cold) were performed in 25 healthy control subjects and 24 patients with carpal tunnel syndrome: first, to compare the extent of abnormality demonstrable in the function of large and small afferent axons; second, to correlate these abnormalities with clinical severity; and third, to validate a modified form of palmar stimulation as an additional neurophysiological test in suspected carpal tunnel syndrome. The routine nerve conduction studies compared the amplitudes and conduction velocities from digit II and digit V to wr

Evaluation of the motor and sensory components of the pudendal nerve.

Extensive neurophysiological investigations consisting of different techniques to evaluate the efferents and afferents of the pudendal nerve were carried out in 27 healthy subjects. These investigations included motor evoked potential recordings from the external anal sphincter in response to magnetic stimulation of the cortex and lumbosacral roots, measurement of sacral reflex latency to magnetic and electrical stimulation, and cortical sensory evoked potential recording after stimulation of the dorso-genital nerve and anal canal. Motor latencies after transcranial magnetic stimulation to the

Facial input to neck motoneurons: trigemino-cervical reflexes in the conscious and anaesthetised cat.

Cutaneous facial inputs influencing head movement were examined in the conscious and anaesthetised cat. EMG recordings were made in neck muscles of conscious, unrestrained cats in which an unexpected light cutaneous stimulus was applied to the glabrous skin of the planum nasale (PN). These observations established that head aversion movements were associated with synchronised activation of both deep and superficial dorsal neck muscles. In anaesthetised cats in which activity in the motoneurons of the large dorsal neck muscles was examined, mechanical stimulation of the PN or electrical stimula

Developmental language disorders: evidence for a basic processing deficit.

Although there is still some disagreement whether developmental reading and language disorders are neurologically based, recent research provides increasing evidence that these disorders may be due to both abnormal cerebral lateralization patterns and neurological pathology at the cellular level. Technological advances in the field of neuroscience have led to increasing knowledge about brain-behavior relationships, particularly in the area of higher cognitive functions. Hypotheses about the underlying causes of the functional deficits characterizing developmental language and reading disorders
