The frequency of HLA alleles in the Romanian population.

Knowledge of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) allele frequencies is essential for bone marrow and kidney donor searches. The Romanian Caucasian population is heterogeneous and information on HLA polymorphism has not been well studied. We characterized the HLA genetic profile and allele frequencies of regional populations in Romania. HLA-A, B and DRB1 alleles were examined in 8252 individuals, belonging to the four main regions of Romania. The most common alleles found in the Romanian population are the following: HLA-A*01, A*02, A*03, A*11, A*24; HLA-B*18, B*35, B*44, B*51 and HLA-DRB1*01, DRB1*0

CACNA1C rs1006737 genotype and bipolar disorder: Focus on intermediate phenotypes and cardiovascular comorbidity.

Recently, multiple genome-wide association studies have identified a genetic polymorphism (CACNA1C rs1006737) that appears to confer susceptibility for BD. This article aims to summarize the existing literature regarding the impact of rs1006737 on functional and structural neuroimaging intermediate phenotypes. Twenty eight articles, representing 2486 healthy participants, 369 patients with BD and 104 healthy first-degree relatives of patients with BD, are incorporated. Multiple studies have demonstrated structural differences, functional differences associated with emotion-related and frontal-

Serotonin transporter polymorphism related to amygdala excitability and symptom severity in patients with social phobia.

A functional polymorphism in the promoter region of the human serotonin transporter (5-HTT) gene has been related to negative affect and amygdala activity. We studied amygdala activation during social anxiety provocation in relation to affective ratings and 5-HTT genetic variation. [H2(15)O]positron emission tomography was used to estimate amygdala blood flow during private and public speaking (baseline and anxiety conditions) in 17 patients with social phobia. Genotyping identified patients with long and short alleles in the promoter region of the 5-HTT. Individuals with one or two copies of

Absence of association between Alzheimer disease and the regulatory region polymorphism of the PS2 gene in an Italian population.

Alzheimer disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disorder of aging. Identifying novel AD genetic risk factors is important for understanding its pathogenesis. A recent study demonstrated that the deletion of adenosine in the promoter region of the presenilin 2 gene (PS2) is a susceptibility factor for early-onset AD. The objective of our study was to test the possibility that this variation is associated with AD in the Italian population. A case-control association study was performed, using 200 sporadic AD cases and 160 normal controls matched by age, gender and ethnicity. The curr

Correction to: Digital Eye Strain and Dry Nose: an Observational Study on Screen OverUse and Emerging Otorhinolaryngological Symptoms in Young Adults.

INTRODUCTION: The zoonotic malaria parasite Plasmodium knowlesi has currently become the most dominant form of infection in humans in Malaysia and is an emerging infectious disease in most Southeast Asian countries. The P41 is a merozoite surface protein belonging to the 6-cysteine family and is a well-characterized vaccine candidate in P. vivax and P. falciparum; however, no study has been done in the orthologous gene of P. knowlesi. This study investigates the level of polymorphism, haplotypes and natural selection of pk41 genes in clinical isolates from Malaysia. METHOD: Thirty-five full-l

Association of DNA methyltransferase polymorphisms with breast cancer: a nested case‒control study of the Arkansas Rural Community Health study.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer and a leading cause of cancer-related mortality among women in the United States. While many risk factors have been identified, a substantial proportion of breast cancer cases occur in individuals without known risk profiles, underscoring the need to investigate novel genetic and epigenetic contributors. DNA methylation, an epigenetic modification regulated by DNA methyltransferase (DNMT) enzymes, plays a critical role in gene expression and genomic stability. METHODS: This nested case‒control study, conducted within the Arka

Meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies of food allergy and IgE sensitization.

BACKGROUND: Food allergy (FA) arises from a complex interplay between an individual's genetic predisposition and environmental factors, and its prevalence is increasing. Genome-wide association studies to date have been hindered by small sample sizes and varying FA definitions. OBJECTIVE: We sought to identify novel FA risk loci by conducting a genome-wide association study meta-analysis in children and adults by using a multiphenotype approach to ensure a good trade-off between sufficient sample size and valid FA definitions. METHODS: Analyses were conducted separately in children and adult

Surfactant proteins A and D nucleotide variants: association with retinal vascular disease.

BACKGROUND: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is associated with systemic inflammation. Surfactant proteins A and D (SP-A and SP-D) play an immunomodulatory role. We previously reported the impact of SP-A on retinal angiogenesis. This study investigates SP-A and SP-D single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with risk of ROP. METHODS: Subjects were infants with gestational age (GA) of <32 weeks and/or birth weight <1500 grams. DNA from blood was used to genotype the SNPs. Statistical analysis used logistic regression for the association of ROP with genetic and clinical factors, including bronchop

The association between the Glutathione S-transferase polymorphisms and addiction to opioids and methamphetamine in the Iranian population.

INTRODUCTION: Glutathione S-transferase (GST) has the ability to detoxify the cellular environment of xenobiotic compounds and by-products of oxidative stress. The expression levels of GST genes and their polymorphisms are associated with various human diseases. Methamphetamine and opiate addiction also account for a significant proportion of SUDs in Iran. Considering the oxidative stress induced by morphine and methamphetamine and the potential of GST as a therapeutic option for SUD, we aimed to investigate the association of common genetic variations of two genes from GST family, GSTT1 and G
