Epidemiology and clinical impact of hepatitis D virus (delta) infection.

We tested sera collected between 1976 and 1984 from 362 persons in a variety of epidemiologic categories with acute and chronic hepatitis B and from 76 hemophiliacs and drug addicts with hepatitis B antibodies for hepatitis D markers. Hepatitis D markers were common in hemophiliacs, drug addicts, Afghanistanis, prisoners and hemodialysis patients; rare in persons from other hepatitis-B endemic areas, persons with sporadic hepatitis B and homosexual men; and absent in health-care workers and institutionalized mentally retarded persons. No change was observed in the frequency of this infection d

Delayed hypersensitivity in females. The development of allergic contact dermatitis in females during the comparison of two predictive patch tests.

Ten chemically different compounds were applied to the skin of the backs of male and female volunteers to induce delayed hypersensitivity responses. The 10 compounds had a low, moderate, high or unknown allergenic potential and were divided among five test panels (modified Draize) consisting of 150 subjects each. In each panel, 75 subjects (mean age 31 years) were always male prisoners (50% Caucasians) and the remaining 75 subjects (greater than 90% Caucasians) were divided, age-matched free males and females (mean age 24 years). Three compounds, each on different panels, had a significantly h

Differences in Hospitalization and Inpatient Death Patterns by Incarceration Status in 31 US Jurisdictions, 2021.

OBJECTIVE: Population-based studies that examine both hospitalization and inpatient death patterns by incarceration status are sparse. We sought to compare hospitalization and inpatient death patterns by incarceration status in the United States. METHODS: In this retrospective study of adults aged 18 to 64 years, we used the 2021 State Inpatient Database files from 31 US jurisdictions, which included discharges from general acute care hospitals. We compared hospitalization and inpatient death patterns among incarcerated adults versus nonincarcerated adults using adjusted rate ratios (ARRs) an

A Study of the Context Upon Community Re-entry for Young Adults With a History of Sexual Offending Sentenced to Shorter Incarcerations.

Research regarding community re-entry of individuals with sexual offending histories (SOH) has focused on preventing sexual re-offending through surveillance and support interventions. However, most individuals with SOH, serving shorter incarceration sentences, often lack surveillance and support upon community re-entry. This is especially concerning for young adults with SOH as they often are subjected to a negative social reaction in addition to having psychosocial needs and a high level of risk and criminogenic needs, which might result in not receiving tailored interventions, and therefore

The Person Behind the Crime: Life Stories of Women and Men Who Committed Sexual Crimes.

Research on individuals convicted of sexual crimes has focused mainly on risk factors and recidivism. Less attention has been given to how these individuals construct meaning around their life trajectories. This qualitative study explores and compares the life narratives of men and women convicted of sexual crimes. Semi-structured life story interviews were conducted with 11 incarcerated individuals: 4 women and 7 men. Data were analyzed using narrative analysis. Five central narrative themes emerged across participants: family, reclusion, intimate relationships, crime, and substance abuse. Pa

Longitudinal Symptom Transitions Predict Incident Tuberculosis Risk in Serial Active Case Finding.

Tuberculosis (TB) screening often relies on cross-sectional symptom assessment. To determine the added value of longitudinal symptom monitoring, we conducted a prospective cohort study among 2282 incarcerated men in Brazil. Every 4 months, participants were assessed for symptoms and incident TB (Xpert or culture positive). Compared with remaining asymptomatic, developing symptoms was associated with higher TB risk (aRR 2.31; 95% CI 1.55-3.43), strongest among those with prior radiographic abnormalities (aRR 2.49; 95% CI 1.56-3.97), while remaining symptomatic was not associated (aRR 1.27; 95%

Therapeutic Alliance Moderates Psychopathy-Outcome Relation in Treatment of Substance-Abusing Offenders.

The present study attempts to clarify the relationship between psychopathy, the therapeutic alliance, and success of offender treatment. In a German sample of n = 89 convicted men in addiction treatment, we examined whether early therapeutic alliance ratings moderated the relationship between psychopathy, as measured by the Psychopathy Checklist - Revised (PCL-R), and treatment success within the first 6 months. Results indicated that a moderation model is appropriate, as the association between total PCL-R and treatment success differed as a function of perceived therapeutic alliance. Specifi

State-level changes in racial disparities in probation and parole rates in the United States, 2001-2018.

Although the public health field has increasingly studied the collateral consequences of incarceration, we know little about the health consequences of other forms of criminal legal contact, including probation and parole. Understanding spatial and racial-ethnic variation in probation/parole across US states provides new insights into how community supervision impacts population health disparities. However, state-level probation/parole prevalence has not been adequately described. Using data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics and the Census for the years 2001 to 2018, we provide the first s

Politics in policy: An experimental examination of public views regarding sentence reductions via second chance mechanisms.

OBJECTIVE: This research examined how the cost of incarceration to the state and type of offense affect public support for different levels of sentence reductions (10%, 25%, 50%) via policies called "second chance" mechanisms that reduce incarcerated populations as well as whether political ideology or affiliation predicts such support. HYPOTHESES: (a) Across different levels of sentence reductions, participants were expected to show significantly decreased support for the use of second chance mechanisms for violent compared with nonviolent crimes (b) but also to show significantly increased

State-Mandated Opioid Use Disorder Treatment In Maryland Jails Helped Patients Recover Despite Gaps In Care.

Providing medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) reduces overdose risk after release from a carceral facility. In 2019, Maryland enacted a comprehensive law mandating that all jails provide all three forms of MOUD during incarceration and reentry support. The experiences of patients who received this care in jail have not been explored to date. We examined the perspectives of twenty-four people recently released from Maryland jails during the period January 2023-March 2024. Most participants noted an improvement in opioid addiction care in jail when compared with their previous jail stays.

Mandela Yoga: a community case study for a post-incarceration reentry service for men of color in recovery.

BACKGROUND: Disparities in substance use treatment access and outcomes between communities with racially, economically, linguistically, and mentally/physically marginalized identities and more privileged populations are staggering. Communities of color lack access to culturally resonant treatment options that incorporate the role of racial oppression, address the chronic effects of stress on the nervous system, provide culturally-and linguistically-matched community support in substance use recovery, and contend with social determinants of health. Mandela Yoga, a community-based peer-led mindf

Costing analysis of a Queensland community corrections hepatitis C screening program.

BACKGROUND: People involved with the criminal justice system typically have lower healthcare engagement and higher risk of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection than the general population. Interventions run at community corrections centres have the potential to diagnose and treat previously unreached populations. This study aimed to estimate the cost per treatment initiation and cost per cure through HCV programs at community corrections centres. METHODS: Data were obtained over the period of July 2022 to July 2023 from screening clinics run by Hepatitis Queensland in four community corrections

Facebook as a Strategy To Deliver a Peer Navigation Intervention for Recently Incarcerated Women with Opioid Use Disorder: A Mixed Methods Descriptive Profile.

Recovery support and treatment linkages are critical during transitions from incarceration to community but can be challenging to deliver to hard-to-reach populations. This paper will examine Facebook contacts between peer navigators (PNs) and women with opioid use disorder (OUD) following jail release to explore women's use of PN services, including purpose and content of Facebook messages. As part of a larger clinical trial under the Justice Community Opioid Innovation Network (JCOIN), PNs provided OUD treatment navigation and recovery support for 12 weeks following women's release from jail

An audit study of barriers to mental health treatment for wrongly incarcerated people.

OBJECTIVE: People who have been wrongly incarcerated report exceptionally poor mental health, and despite having been exonerated, they face discrimination similar to other formerly incarcerated people when seeking housing and employment opportunities. The current audit study was designed to test whether exonerees likewise face discrimination when seeking mental health treatment. HYPOTHESES: Therapists will reply less often to treatment inquiries from exonerees and parolees compared to another prospective client with the same symptoms and trauma history-and when therapists do reply, they will

Family member incarceration and loneliness among low-income U.S. veterans.

Exposure to incarceration can have significant ramifications for one's social relationships. However, the study of how the incarceration of a family member influences loneliness, including among specific segments of the population that experience elevated levels of loneliness, such as U.S. military veterans, has gone understudied. This study aimed to examine the relationship between family member incarceration and perceptions of loneliness among a sample of low-income U.S. military veterans. Data are from the National Veteran Homeless and Other Poverty Experiences Study-a national survey of lo

The Impact of Trauma-Sensitive Yoga on Persons Who Are Incarcerated: Identifying, Understanding, and Controlling Emotions.

BACKGROUND: While persons who are incarcerated have high rates of previous trauma, further traumatization can result from the experience of incarceration. The inability to effectively process trauma can lead to maladaptive behavior, a serious concern for correctional administrators. Acquiring the skills to regulate emotions and mitigate feelings of impulsivity help persons who are incarcerated take responsibility for their actions to make better decisions, simultaneously encouraging prosocial behavior, decreasing institutional misconduct, and reducing behaviors that place one at risk for repea

Treatment preference for opioid use disorder among people who are incarcerated.

INTRODUCTION: The devastating overdose crisis remains a leading cause of death in the United States, especially among individuals involved in the criminal legal system. Currently, three classes (opioid agonist, partial agonist-antagonist, and antagonist) of FDA-approved medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) exist, yet few correctional settings offer any medication treatment for people who are incarcerated. Facilities that do often provide only one medication. METHODS: We conducted 40 semi-structured qualitative interviews with individuals receiving MOUD incarcerated at the Rhode Island D

Neutropenia in Incarcerated Adolescents Secondary to Intranasal Quetiapine Misuse.

Objective: Between April 2015 and May 2016, a number of young males incarcerated at a Youth Justice center in New South Wales, Australia, were noted to have unexplained and significant neutropenia. None of the adolescents were prescribed quetiapine; however, it was prescribed for other young people in the center for this time period. The authors undertook a case series review to investigate the cause of this neutropenia. Methods: Case series review, including review of all pathology, electrocardiograms, medication charts, and medical file notes. Results: Quetiapine was used in the center; howe
