Inclusive Socialization? The Relationships between Parents' and Their Child's Attitudes toward Students with Disabilities.

Promoting social and school inclusion of children with disabilities has been associated with their health-related quality of life. This study aimed to analyze the connection between parents and children's attitudes toward disabilities as one factor contributing to the inclusion and well-being of individuals with disabilities. Three types of disabilities-i.e., attitudes toward a child with a sensory disability (hearing), a child with an intellectual disability (Down syndrome), and a child with problems with aggressiveness and angry outbursts (behavioral problems)-were examined. A sample of 598

A Novel POGZ Variant in a Patient with Intellectual Disability and Obesity.

White-Sutton syndrome is a rare type of autosomal dominant neurodevelopmental disorder caused by mutations, mostly de novo, in the POGZ gene. No more than 120 patients have been described so far in the literature. Common clinical manifestations include intellectual disability, developmental delay, autism spectrum disorder, other behavioral abnormalities, sleeping problems, hyperactivity and visual problems. We describe a 20-year-old male patient from Colombia who presented with delayed psychomotor development, intellectual disability, obesity, sleep difficulties, hypotonia, hypogonadism, gynec

[Nutritional Care of Older Adult Residents Living in Long-Term Care Facilities].

An estimated one-fifth to one half (17.5%-50.5%) of the older adult residents living in long-term care facilities are either malnourished or at risk of malnourishment. Malnutrition in older adults is related to frailty, sarcopenia, anemia, falls, morbidity, and mortality. Monitoring nutritional status and instituting appropriate nutritional care plans in long-term care facilities can help prevent the development of disabilities in older adult residents and reduce long-term healthcare expenditures. In this article, after introducing the primary diagnostic tests for malnutrition, the three main

Direct and Indirect Pathways From Adverse Childhood Experiences to High School Dropout Among High-Risk Adolescents.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with an increased risk for school dropout. This study examined pathways from childhood adversity to school dropout through academic, behavioral, emotional, and social pathways. Data were collected prospectively from 728 adolescents and their caregivers who participated in the Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect and from child protective services records. Path analyses revealed a direct association between ACEs and dropout, as well as indirect effects through poor reading achievement and elevated externalizing problems. ACEs were a

Overweight and obesity: prevalence and correlates in a large clinical sample of children with autism spectrum disorder.

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) and childhood obesity (OBY) are rising public health concerns. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of overweight (OWT) and OBY in a sample of 376 Oregon children with ASD, and to assess correlates of OWT and OBY in this sample. We used descriptive statistics, bivariate, and focused multivariate analyses to determine whether socio-demographic characteristics, ASD symptoms, ASD cognitive and adaptive functioning, behavioral problems, and treatments for ASD were associated with OWT and OBY in ASD. Overall 18.1% of children met criteria for OWT and 17.0% me

Sleep deprivation and neurobehavioral functioning in children.

Sleep deprivation can result in significant impairments in daytime neurobehavioral functioning in children. Neural substrates impacted by sleep deprivation include the prefrontal cortex, basal ganglia and amygdala and result in difficulties with executive functioning, reward anticipation and emotional reactivity respectively. In everyday life, such difficulties contribute to academic struggles, challenging behaviors and public health concerns of substance abuse and suicidality. In this article, we aim to review 1) core neural structures impacted by sleep deprivation; 2) neurobehavioral problem

Rethinking "posterior" tongue-tie.

Currently, many clinicians who help with breastfeeding problems are diagnosing "posterior" tongue-tie in infants and performing or referring for frenotomy. In this "Speaking Out" article, I argue that the diagnosis of "posterior" tongue-tie has successfully raised awareness of the importance of impaired tongue function in breastfeeding difficulty. However, the diagnosis of "posterior" tongue-tie also applies a reductionist, medicalized theoretical frame to the complex problem of impaired tongue function, risking unintended outcomes. Impaired tongue function arises out of multiple interacting a

Placentophagia in humans and nonhuman mammals: causes and consequences.

Afterbirth ingestion by nonhuman mammalian mothers has a number of benefits: (1) increasing the interaction between the mother and infant; (2) potentiating pregnancy-mediated analgesia in the delivering mother; (3) potentiating maternal brain opioid circuits that facilitate the onset of caretaking behavior; and (4) suppressing postpartum pseudopregnancy. Childbirth is fraught with additional problems for which there are no practical nonhuman animal models: postpartum depression, failure to bond, hostility toward infants. Ingested afterbirth may contain components that ameliorate these problems

BASC-2 PRS profiles for students with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders.

BASC-2 PRS profiles of 62 children with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders (HFASDs) were compared with those of 62 typically-developing children matched by age, gender, and ethnicity. Results indicated that, except for the Somatization, Conduct Problems, and Aggression scales, significant differences were found between the HFASD and typically-developing groups on all PRS scores. Mean HFASD scores were in the clinically significant range on the Behavioral Symptoms Index, Atypicality, Withdrawal, and Developmental Social Disorders scales. At-risk range HFASD means were obtained on the Ad

Some effects of aging on central auditory processing.

Seniors often have more difficulty understanding speech than younger adults, particularly in noisy environments. While loss in peripheral hearing sensitivity explains many of the listening problems of elderly persons, age-related declines in general cognitive skill and central auditory processing also appear to contribute. In this article, we focus primarily on the effects of age on central auditory mechanisms. To this end, we review research examining a central locus for deficits in temporal processing and summarize behavioral and event-related potential findings from our laboratory's researc

No child left without a brain scan? Toward a pediatric neuroethics.

Brain research is yielding new information about the development of cognitive and behavioral traits in children--and how development can go off track. This is information parents, teachers, and others will use to help with problems from dyslexia to drug abuse. But with this information, often technical, come many questions. Will knowledge from brain scans be used to label children early in life? How will confidentiality be maintained as diverse providers, some of them commercial, compete for patients? Should government pay for scanning all children to identify not only potential problems but a

The relationship between automatic thoughts and negative emotions in children and adolescents: a test of the cognitive content-specificity hypothesis.

The aim of this study was to test the cognitive content-specificity hypothesis in children and adolescents aged 7-16 years. Participants consisted of a community sample of 200 youth and a clinical sample of 160 youth with anxiety, depressive, or disruptive behavior disorders. Participants completed several self-report measures assessing a wide range of negative beliefs and symptoms of internalizing and externalizing problems. Multivariate analyses examining the interrelationships between beliefs and noncognitive symptoms revealed that thoughts on loss or personal failure were the strongest pre

The alcoholic family: a nursing diagnosis validation study.

This study was designed to develop and validate a new nursing diagnosis, altered family processes: alcoholism. The Delphi technique was used to obtain nurse experts' (N = 201) ratings of terms for the definition, related factors, and defining characteristics. Degree of consensus was determined by analyzing the mean, frequencies, and Fehring's (1987) Diagnostic Content Validity Index for items. Findings supported a proposed definition and related factors including family history of alcoholism and lack of problem-solving skills. Defining characteristics were grouped into three categories: feelin

Computer based testing: implications for testing handicapped/disabled examinees.

The purpose of this study was to obtain information about computer use by nurses with a learning disability or other handicap, to identify the difficulties encountered by these nurses, and to distinguish the adaptive behaviors used to compensate for these difficulties. In addition, information was desired regarding learning disabled/handicapped nurses' perceptions about problems related to computer-administered examinations. Sixty-three percent of 86 respondents indicated using computers at work and/or at home. Difficulty in reading screen text was reported by 21% of the computer users; 34% re

The Preoccupation with Alcohol Scale: development and validation.

The purpose of the present study was to develop a psychometrically sound measure of preoccupation with alcohol in a group of young, heavy drinking men and to examine some correlates of this drinking style. A brief Preoccupation with Alcohol Scale (PAS) was derived that exhibited substantial internal consistency. Data from a sample of the 67 males indicated that higher PAS scores were significantly related to alcohol consumption and frequency of intoxication within many different contextual circumstances. The PAS was also related to alcohol problems after controlling for average daily alcohol c

Establishing a transdiagnostic dimension of early childhood depressive symptoms using the Preschool Feelings Checklist-Scale.

BACKGROUND: Young child depressive symptoms are associated with various concurrent and future psychiatric problems, indicating early transdiagnostic risk for psychopathology. We now need studies that identify and test the robustness, reliability, and validity of early emerging depressive symptom dimensions, examining them relative to wide-ranging forms of psychopathology. Psychometric methods are suitable for such investigations. METHODS: In a sample of 547 young children (ages 3-7 years) enriched for internalizing problems, preregistered analyses on the psychometric properties of the Prescho

Anorexia nervosa-the frequency of occurrence in Polish youth, the connection with stress, auto-aggressive behaviors and the abuse of psychoactive substances.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by a distorted self-image, an intense desire for weight loss, anxiety, and strict dieting. The disorder primarily affects children, adolescents, and young adults. It leads to serious health consequences and increases the risk of depression, suicidal thoughts, and addiction. The causes of the disorder are multifactorial, including genetic influences, social pressures, and emotional problems. Eating disorders are now considered a serious public health problem that requires special supervision by specialists and the development of l

Sleep disturbances and behavioral symptoms in pediatric Sotos syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Sotos syndrome (SoS) is a rare overgrowth genetic disease caused by intragenic mutations or microdeletions of the NSD1 gene located on chromosome 5q35. SoS population might present cognitive impairment and a spectrum of behavioral characteristics, with a worse profile in patients with microdeletion. Although patients with SoS are known to have impaired sleep habits, very little data are available. The present study aimed to assess the prevalence of sleep disorders (SDs) in a pediatric cohort of patients with SoS and their correlation with neuropsychiatric profiles. METHODS: We inc

[Perioperative psychobehavioural changes in children].

The relevant literature since the 1940s has been collected from the Medline database, using the keywords: child, operation, anxiety, distress, postoperative complications, preparation, premedication, parental presence, prevention. Preoperative anxiety, emergence delirium, and postoperative behavior changes are all manifestations of psychological distress in children undergoing surgery. Preoperative anxiety is most prominent during anaesthesia induction. Emergence delirium is frequent and somewhat independent of pain levels. Postoperative behavior changes most often include separation anxiety,
