Histochemical knowledge of the distribution of CA and the two isozymes CA I and CA II has been reviewed here. An abundance of CA occurs most commonly in epithelial cells specializing in transport of ions and water. A mechanism is favored whereby the polarity of efflux of CA-generated protons and bicarbonate across the apical versus the basolateral plasmalemma depends not on the location of CA, which is probably in the cytosol in most sites, but rather on the transport properties of the luminal compared with the serosal region of the plasma membrane in each epithelial cell type. Here we report the structure of Opa60 in lipid bilayers using proton-detected magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR). Preparations including near-native oligosaccharide lipids reveal a consistent picture of a stable transmembrane beta barrel with a minor increase in the structured region as compared with the previously reported detergent structure. Heterotopic gastric mucosa (HGM) in the colon and small bowel is a very rare finding. We report a case of HGM in the rectum of an 8-year-old child with a history of eosinophilic esophagitis after having a colonoscopy to evaluate for inflammatory bowel disease. The bacterial flagellar motor is a molecular machine that can rotate the flagellar filament at high speed. The rotation is generated by the stator-rotor interaction, coupled with an ion flux through the torque-generating stator. The inversion of the keto-enol stability order of dialuric acid on ionization was calculated and verified experimentally. The radical cations in both forms were characterized. The spectrum of the keto form was observed upon direct ionization of dialuric acid under matrix conditions, whereas the enol form was formed upon a sequential electron-proton-proton attachment to alloxan under acidic aqueous condition. Facilitation of the one-electron oxidation of dialuric acid upon its enolization can result in a more effective formation of superoxide radical anion in the process of its auto-oxidation.

AIM: To study the proton MR spectroscopic findings in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) (sporadic and variant).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: MR imaging and proton MR spectra were acquired in two patients with sporadic CJD (biopsy proven) and one patient with variant CJD.
RESULTS: The two patients with sporadic CJD demonstrated MR signal change within the basal ganglia and thalami and reduced N-acetylaspartate (NAA):creatine ratios. The patient with variant CJD showed characteristic signal change within the pulvinar of the thalami and a markedly reduced N-acetylaspartate:creatine ratio.
