A 50-year-old woman with an 8-year history of diffuse systemic sclerosis, a form of scleroderma, was referred by her rheumatologist to physical therapy for decreased finger range of motion (ROM) and pain that adversely affected her dexterity and ability to perform activities of daily living. To determine whether joint mobilization would be appropriate for this patient, posterior-to-anterior and modified lateral radiographs of both hands were requested by the physical therapist. Images showed significant bone loss in the distal phalanges of both thumbs and in the left third and fourth digits, a

Plexiform neurofibromas are benign tumors that tend to occur in patients suffering from neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1). This report addresses a rare case where the tumor affected the parotid gland, deriving almost exclusively from the peripheral portion of the facial nerve. A 6-year-old male was referred to us complaining about a gradually enlarging swelling over the right parotid area. Imaging localized the lesion to the superficial lobe of the parotid gland, suggesting a neurofibroma. Cosmetic disfigurement and a functional deficit led us to perform complete surgical resection. Meticulous s

We describe the case of a male patient, aged 76 years, referred for cardiac investigation due to retrosternal chest pain and dyspnea. He had a history of acute myocardial infarction and angioplasties in the last 30 years, including a saphenous vein coronary artery bypass grafting (SVCABG). Echocardiogram showed hypoechoic oval formation near the right ventricle, suggesting a pericardial cyst. Computed angiotomography revealed a predominantly fusiform and thrombosed aneurysmal dilation of the SVCABG to the right coronary artery. SVCABG aneurysms are very rare and potentially fatal. They usually

Rhodococcus equi is a rare pathogen in humans causing infections mostly in immunocompromised hosts. We present the first case of periprosthetic joint infection caused by Rhodococcus equi. An 88-year-old male patient was referred to our clinic with a history of fever and right hip pain. The patient had multiple hip surgeries including total joint arthroplasty and revision for aseptic loosening on the right side. He was immunocompetent, but his additional medical history was remarkable for diabetes mellitus, diabetic nephropathy and stroke with hemiplegia resulting in immobilization. Radiography

Pancreatic pseudocyst is a common complication of acute pancreatitis. Pseudocysts are commonly observed in the lesser sac and retroperitoneum; they are rarely seen in the liver. Herein, we report a case of intrahepatic pseudocyst, complicated by asymptomatic groove pancreatitis, that has successfully been treated with hepatic resection. A 70-year-old woman was referred to our hospital with severe upper abdominal pain. Abdominal computed tomography scan showed 11x10 cm sized cystic lesion in the left lateral section of the liver. Appearance of the pancreas was relatively normal. Endoscopic aspi

A 49-year-old man complaining of fever, chest pain, and hemosputum was examined at a local hospital. A chest computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a 35 mm mass shadow with cavity in the right upper lobe, but a transbronchial lung biopsy could not establish a complete diagnosis. After 1 month follow-up, the patient was referred to our hospital because the mass shadow wall remained thick despite the cavity shrinking. The mass shadow cavity disappeared 2 months after the 1st CT at our hospital. Video-assisted thoracic surgery was performed for both making diagnosis and treatment. The patient was

Introduction. Here, we present a case of polymicrobial anaerobic spondylodiscitis. Case Presentation. A forty-five year-old female patient was referred to a specialist orthopaedic hospital with an eight week history of back pain without fevers. X-ray imaging and magnetic resonance imaging showed acute osteomyelitis of the twelfth thoracic and first lumbar vertebrae. Prolonged enrichment cultures grew Parvimonas micra and Fusobacterium nucleatum, identified by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation-time of flight (MALDI-ToF) mass spectrometry (MS). The patient was successfully treated with

INTRODUCTION: Kaposi sarcoma is an angioproliferative disorder that requires infection with human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) for its development. The majority of cases are associated with HIV infection or other immunocompromising conditions. Thymomas are occasionally associated to cytopenia, which may alter the patients' immune responses.
METHODS: Case report using clinical records.
RESULTS: Case report of a 46-year-old male patient diagnosed with thymoma and myasthenia gravis. The patient was referred to an otolaryngology consultation with complaints of facial pain in the right malar region, int

We present a woman referred with underlying non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) masquerading clinically with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) like syndrome. At first evaluation, chest CT-Scan along with brain and whole spine MRI were normal. Electrodiagnostic studies were in favor of acute generalized polyradiculoneuropathy. Laboratory evaluation revealed hypoglycorrhachia. She treated with plasmapheresis after two weeks; she was discharged from hospital, but neurological recovery was not complete. After 6 months, she came back with acute onset of weakness in lower limbs, back pain, fever and urinary in

Root canal anatomy is complex, and the recognition of anatomic variations could be a challenge for clinicians. This case report describes the importance of cone beam computed tomographyic (CBCT) imaging during endodontic treatment. A 23 year old woman was referred by her general dental practitioner with the chief complaint of spontaneous pain in her right posterior maxilla. From the clinical and radiographic findings, a diagnosis of symptomatic irreversible pulpitis was made and endodontic treatment was suggested to the patient. The patient underwent CBCT examination, and CBCT scan slices reve

A 10-year-old castrated male Beagle dog was presented with a 2-month history of intermittent vomiting and abdominal pain. The dog was referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Iwate University for further evaluation, and a splenic tumour was suspected on the basis of ultrasonography and computed tomography. Surgery identified a large, solid, light-pink mass on the greater omentum with blood-coloured ascites in the abdominal cavity, and resection was performed. Microscopically, the mass comprised spindle-shaped tumour cells and scattered osteoclast-like giant cells. Most spindle-shaped ce

CLINICAL INTRODUCTION: An 82-year-old woman suspected of a cardiac tumour was referred for evaluation. Patient's medical history included atrial fibrillation, implantation of a VVI (ventricular stimulation) pacemaker 3 years earlier due to advanced atrioventicular (AV) block, arterial hypertension and hypothyroidism. Patient was adequately anticoagulated with warfarin (international normalized ratio (INR) 3.0 at admission). She reported occasional palpitations and a 2 kg weight loss in the last 2 years, but denied shortness of breath, chest pain, malaise, fever, chills or cough. Blood samples

The patient was a 39-year-old woman who was referred to our department from her previous doctor with a 2-day history of right abdominal pain. Abdominal computed tomography showed wall thickening associated with calcification in the ascending colon. Contrast enhancement in the same portion of the intestinal wall was rather poor. Fluid accumulation was also seen around the intestine, so emergency surgery was performed under a provisional diagnosis of intestinal necrosis. Intestinal necrosis due to idiopathic mesenteric phlebosclerosis was diagnosed from postoperative histopathological tests. Idi

Anterior sacral meningoceles (ASMs) have a recognized association with a number of connective tissue disorders, including Marfan's syndrome, neurofibromatosis Type 1 and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. We present the case of a patient with Marfan's syndrome and ASMs who was referred to gynaecology owing to dysmenorrhoea and left-sided pelvic pain radiating to the left leg. A transvaginal ultrasound scan (TVUS) detected a left pelvic cystic tubular structure, attributed to a hydrosalpinx, which, in retrospect, likely corresponded to the ASM. The patient went on to have TVUS-guided drainage of this cyst

The common presentation of coeliac disease has shifted from the historically classical symptoms of malabsorption in childhood to non-classical symptoms in adulthood such as irritable bowel syndrome-type symptoms, anaemia, chronic fatigue, change in bowel habit, abdominal pain and osteoporosis. A combination of coeliac serology and duodenal biopsy is required to diagnose coeliac disease in adults. Testing for IgA-tissue transglutaminase antibodies should be carried out as a first-line screening test. Advise patients to eat a gluten-containing diet for six weeks before their investigations to en

A case of tophaceous pseudogout (i.e., calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystal deposition disease) in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), extending to the base of the skull, is reported. A 38-year-old man was referred to the hospital with mild pain in the right chin and tip of the tongue. Panoramic radiography showed a large calcified mass around the right TMJ. Computed tomography imaging revealed a large, granular, calcified mass surrounding the right condylar head and extending to the base of the skull. The mass was clinically and radiographically suspected to be a pseudogout lesion. A
