Helminth parasitisms among intermingling insular populations of white-tailed deer, feral cattle, and feral swine.

Helminth infections among free-ranging, intermingling populations of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), cattle (Bos taurus), and swine (Sus scrofa) on an island off the Georgia coast were studied. Of 39 species of helminths collected, 19 were found in deer, 17 in cattle, and 13 in swine. Of 28 species of helminths recovered from ruminants, 8, viz, Capillaria bovis, Cooperia punctata, Dictyocaulus viviparus, Gongylonema pulchrum, G verrucosum, Haemonchus contortus, Moniezia benedeni, and Trichostrongylus axei, occurred in both deer and cattle. Common liver flukes (Fasciola hepatica) in…

Triclabendazole for the treatment of fascioliasis.

Fascioliasis is a neglected tropical disease that is commonly caused by flatworms affecting both domestic ruminants and humans. Fascioliasis currently affects roughly 17 million people globally with additional 180 million people at risk of developing infection. Despite the gigantic patient pool, clinicians typically have very few treatment options available. In this context, triclabendazole (Fasinex, Egaten) is the only medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of fascioliasis. The FDA approval has been granted in 2019 although the drug was already utilize…

Antimicrobial Resistance in Listeria Species.

For nearly a century the use of antibiotics to treat infectious diseases has benefited human and animal health. In recent years there has been an increase in the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, in part attributed to the overuse of compounds in clinical and farming settings. The genus Listeria currently comprises 17 recognized species found throughout the environment. Listeria monocytogenes is the etiological agent of listeriosis in humans and many vertebrate species, including birds, whereas Listeria ivanovii causes infections mainly in ruminants. L. monocytogenes is the third-most…

Reduction of Coxiella burnetii prevalence by vaccination of goats and sheep, The Netherlands.

Recently, the number of human Q fever cases in the Netherlands increased dramatically. In response to this increase, dairy goats and dairy sheep were vaccinated against Coxiella burnetii. All pregnant dairy goats and dairy sheep in herds positive for Q fever were culled. We identified the effect of vaccination on bacterial shedding by small ruminants. On the day of culling, samples of uterine fluid, vaginal mucus, and milk were obtained from 957 pregnant animals in 13 herds. Prevalence and bacterial load were reduced in vaccinated animals compared with unvaccinated animals. These effects were …

Successful embryo recovery from swine by a minimal invasive technique.

An endoscopic embryo flushing technique was elaborated to make possible the minimal invasive collection of ova from swine. After experience with pig laparoscopy, the method of endoscopic embryo recovery in small ruminants was adapted to the abdominal anatomy of swine. Twelve oestrus-synchronized gilts were operated 5 days after artificial insemination. In 10 cases both uterine horns were flushed by using a Rüsch-Gold balloon catheter, flushing cannula and atraumatic grasping forceps beside the 10 mm diameter optic. The whole procedure took approximately 35-45 min. The average collection rate w…

Pathological consequences of copper deficiency and cobalt deficiency.

Aspects of the pathology of copper deficiency in several species, and cobalt deficiency in sheep, are summarized. An attempt is made to interpret morphological changes in copper-deficient animals in terms of biochemical defects. The common denominator may be mitochondrial lesions, with a generalized effect on energy-dependent synthetic functions of the cell. In copper deficiency, such defects can be attributed to depletion of copper-dependent enzymes, while deficiency of cobalt in ruminants is, in effect, deficiency of vitamin B12. The pathological consequences of vitamin B12 deficiency form a…

Molecular characterization of Blastocystis and Entamoeba of muskoxen and sheep in Greenland.

Molecular characterisation of endobionts that are shared among human and non-human hosts can help shed light on the epidemiology and inform studies that aim to unravel the role of these organisms in health and disease. Two of the most common of shared endobionts include the single-celled intestinal protists Blastocystis and Entamoeba. Here, we present the first known data on genetic diversity and host specificity of these two genera in Greenland. Faecal DNA samples from 243 muskoxen and 44 sheep were submitted to metabarcoding of nuclear small subunit ribosomal DNA. Entamoeba- and Blastocystis

Ovine gammaherpesvirus-2 infection associated with chronic interstitial pneumonia in a sheep.

Sheep Associated-Malignant Catarrhal Fever (SA-MCF) is severe, frequently lethal, lymphoproliferative disease predominantly of ruminants, that is caused by ovine gammaherpesvirus-2 (OvHV-2), a member of the MCF virus (MCFV) complex. However, SA-MCF in sheep is a rare entity with few demonstrations of natural diseases worldwide. This report documents the clinical, radiographical, pathological, immunohistochemical, and molecular findings of SA-MCF in a sheep. A 4-year-old, female, mixed-breed sheep with progressive emaciation for at least one month was humanely euthanized due to poor prognosis. …

On the interplay between hypothermia and reproduction in a high arctic ungulate.

For free-ranging animals living in seasonal environments, hypometabolism (lowered metabolic rate) and hypothermia (lowered body temperature) can be effective physiological strategies to conserve energy when forage resources are low. To what extent such strategies are adopted by large mammals living under extreme conditions, as those encountered in the high Arctic, is largely unknown, especially for species where the gestation period overlaps with the period of lowest resource availability (i.e. winter). Here we investigated for the first time the level to which high arctic muskoxen (Ovibos mos

Influence of particle size and density on mean retention time in the rumen of dairy cows.

Increasing rumen-undegraded protein is one challenge of ruminant nutrition to both meet protein requirements of animals and reduce nitrogen excretion in the environment by increasing nitrogen efficiency. Industrial processes using heat or tanning to reduce rumen protein degradation have certain limitations, such as difficulty in balancing low ruminal degradation and high intestinal digestibility. Reducing the mean retention time (MRT) in the rumen by varying the size and density of particles may be another promising way to increase the rumen-undegraded protein proportion of concentrate feeds a

[Depressed, biased, forgetful: The interaction of emotional and cognitive dysfunctions in depression].

Major depressive disorder is characterized by changes in the emotional state, e. g. the diminished experience of positive emotions, as well as cognitive impairments such as concentration and memory difficulties. These emotional and cognitive dysfunctions are closely interrelated and play a key role for the development and maintenance of depressive symptoms. For instance, patients with depression show negatively biased information processing that affects attention and memory as well as their reaction to feedback. In addition, there is an increased motivation to avoid negatively evaluated condit

Duplex PCR for differentiation of the vaccine strain Brucella suis S2 and B. suis biovar 1 from other strains of Brucella spp.

Immunisation with attenuated Brucella spp. vaccines prevents brucellosis, but may also interfere with diagnosis. In this study, a duplex PCR was developed to distinguish Brucella suis vaccine strain S2 from field strains of B. suis biovar 1 and other Brucella spp. The PCR detected 60 fg genomic DNA of B. suis S2 or biovar 1 field strains and was able to distinguish B. suis S2 and wild-type strains of B. suis biovar 1 among 76 field isolates representing all the common species and biovars, as well as four vaccine strains, of Brucella.

First description of gastrointestinal nematodes of Barbary sheep (Ammotragus lervia): the case of Camelostrongylus mentulatus as a paradigm of phylogenic and specific relationship between the parasite and its ancient host.

The gastrointestinal helminth fauna of 24 Barbary sheep or Aoudad (Ammotragus lervia sahariensis) maintained in the Parque de Rescate de la Fauna Sahariana (PRFS, CSIC, Almeria, Spain) was analyzed. Most animals (87.5 %) were parasitized, and multiple infections were highly present. The following species were identified: Camelostrongylus mentulatus, Teladorsagia circumcincta, Marshallagia marshalli, Ostertagia ostertagi, O. leptospicularis, O. lyrata, Haemonchus contortus, Teladorsagia trifurcata, Trichostrongylus vitrinus, T. colubriformis, T. probolorus, T. capricola, Nematodirus spathiger,

Coinfection is an important factor in epidemiological studies: the first serosurvey of the aoudad (Ammotragus lervia).

Despite being considered an invasive ungulate outside its native range (North Africa), little information exists regarding the role of the aoudad (also called Barbary sheep, Ammotragus lervia) as a pathogen reservoir. Furthermore, in most epidemiological surveys the potential role of coinfections (e.g. a first infection may make the host more immuno-competent or susceptible against a second pathogen) as a risk factor is often neglected. In this study we first performed a serological survey for selected pathogens (Mycobacterium bovis, M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis, Chlamydophila abortus, bov

Gastric electromyographic activity in the milk-fed lamb.

1. Electromyographic (EMG) activity of the reticulum, reticulo-omasal orifice (ROO) and abomasum was recorded from conscious lambs. 2. In fasted lambs diphasic reticular EMG bursts occurred at intervals of 60 +/- 13 s. In association with the second phase of the reticular EMG burst there was consistently a period of inactivity of the EMG of the ROO of 2.4-11.0 s (5.5 +/- 2.0 s, mean +/- S.D.). This period of quiescence ended with the onset of a burst of EMG activity of the ROO of 4.1 +/- 0.8 s termed here a long burst of activity. Preceding the following reticular EMG burst there were further
