Battling on the Home Front: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Conflict Behavior Among Military Couples.

This study evaluated interpersonal behavior differences among male military service members with and without PTSD and their female partners. Couples (N = 64) completed a 17-minute videotaped conflict discussion, and their interaction behavior was coded using the circumplex-based Structural Analysis of Social Behavior model (SASB; Benjamin, 1979, 1987, 2000). Within couples, the behavior of partners was very similar. Compared to military couples without PTSD, couples with PTSD displayed more interpersonal hostility and control. Couples with PTSD also exhibited more sulking, blaming, and control

Nitric oxide (NO) signaling as a potential therapeutic modality against psychostimulants.

Abuse of psychostimulants presents a significant health and social problem worldwide. Traditionally, the dopaminergic system has received much attention for its role in the development and manifestation of addictive behavior. The identification of the close interaction between the dopaminergic and glutamatergic pathway and by extension the nitric oxide (NO) signaling pathway (the nitrergic system) have provided a broader scope on the mechanisms underlying the development of addictive behavior following exposure to cocaine and methamphetamine. NO signaling is associated with the acquisition and

Differentiation of high-functioning autism and Asperger's disorder based on neuromotor behaviour.

Autism and Asperger's disorder (AD) are characterised by impairments in social interaction, stereotypic behaviours or restricted interests. Although currently listed as distinct clinical disorders, the validity of their distinction remains controversial. This study examined gait in children with autism and AD. Eleven children with high-functioning autism and eleven children with AD completed a series of walking tasks. Results indicated distinct movement disturbance; these findings are discussed in light of seminal papers in this field by Vilensky et al. (Arch Neurol 38:646-649, 1981) and Halle…

Epidemiology of male and female reproductive disorders and impact on fertility regulation and population growth.

The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development has conducted a series of vision workshops to set an ambitious but tenable broad agenda, transcending traditional organizational and disciplinary boundaries. This presentation sets forth a vision regarding how the aspects of a woman's reproductive lifespan are interrelated, likely starting from childhood all the way to the later reproductive years. As a woman propagates, this circular interaction is then transmitted to the next generation. We need an understanding of the clinical processes, the time course, the natural history, and d

When do fair procedures not matter? A test of the identity violation effect.

Considerable research has demonstrated that fair procedures help improve reactions to decisions, a phenomenon known as the fair process effect. However, in the present research, the authors identify when and why objectively fair procedures (i.e., receiving voice) may not always improve justice perceptions. Findings from 2 studies (Ns = 108 and 277) yield support for the proposed identity violation effect, which posits that when an outcome violates a central aspect of one's self (i.e., personal and/or social identity), objectively fair procedures do not improve procedural and distributive justi

[Neuropediatric approach to autism].

Autism is defined by 3 main criteria: disturbance of reciprocal social interaction, disturbance of communication (including language comprehension and spoken language) and disturbance of normal variation in behaviour and imaginative activities; an onset before age 36 months is also required. The neuropediatric contribution to autism is dominated by the search for an underlying organic etiology, especially if there are arguments for an associated encephalopathy: ante- or perinatal medical history, dysmorphic signs, skin spots, neurological abnormalities, somatic abnormalities compatible with a …

Self-focused attention and negative affect: a meta-analysis.

This meta-analysis synthesized 226 effect sizes reflecting the relation between self-focused attention and negative affect (depression, anxiety, negative mood). The results demonstrate the multifaceted nature of self-focused attention and elucidate major controversies in the field. Overall, self-focus was associated with negative affect. Several moderators qualified this relationship. Self-focus and negative affect were more strongly related in clinical and female-dominated samples. Rumination yielded stronger effect sizes than nonruminative self-focus. Self-focus on positive self-aspects and

Sex ratio: a biological perspective of 'Sex and the City'.

The primary sex ratio in humans differs remarkably from the theoretically expected equality of 1:1, and may be as high as 170 males to 100 females. A number of environmental, physiological and genetic factors have been observed to impact on the primary sex ratio: sexual behaviour, variation in hormonal concentrations, natural disasters, environmental pollutants and timing of conception. Nevertheless, no biological mechanism or interaction of factors has suitably explained this phenomenon, or that of the prenatal vulnerability of the male, the suspected higher sex ratio in spontaneous abortion

Dyskinesias differentiate autistic disorder from catatonia.

Autistic disorder and catatonia are neuropsychiatric syndromes defined by impairments in social interaction, communication, and restricted, stereotypical motor routines. Assessments of children with these disorders are typically restricted in scope by the patients' limited ability to comprehend directions. The authors performed systematic assessments of dyskinesias on six prepubertal boys with autistic disorder and mental retardation and on one adolescent male with catatonia to determine if this type of information could be routinely obtained. The boys with autistic disorder had more stereotyp…

Reversal of apparent AIDS dementia complex following treatment with vitamin B12.

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated dementia complex is characterized by difficulties in concentration and memory followed by apathy, social withdrawal and motor dysfunction. Decreased serum vitamin B12 levels occur in up to 20% of patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and may adversely contribute to the haematologic and neurologic dysfunction which is frequently attributed to the human immunodeficiency virus. We describe a patient with AIDS who presented with an apparent advanced AIDS dementia complex. There was an associated low serum vitamin B12 resulting fr

Speech-language habilitation of hearing-impaired children: basis for assessment and training.

Spoken language assessment and training for profoundly deaf children should be based on normal developmental sequences. However, existing models of normal speech/language development have not been able to account for shifts from one developmental level to another. The implications of more recent theories of the development of expressive communication are reviewed. The concept of levels of spoken language development is reevaluated in terms of these theories. It is proposed that the developmental landmarks that initiate each level are a product of changes with growth in underlying subsystems. S

Impact of teacher feedback on social working memory and associations with students' fear of evaluation in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Social working memory (SWM) plays a vital role in cognitive processes and social interactions, and it develops rapidly during adolescence. The ability to learn from external feedback increases considerably during adolescence. Teacher feedback is one of the most important types of external feedback, however, its impact on the SWM, particularly in social emotional working memory, in adolescents and its relationship with fear of evaluation remains to be elucidated. METHODS: To address these questions, this study employed a classic facial-emotional 1-back task to examine emotional wor…

The digital pandemic in youth: unpacking the algorithmic impact on mental health in an urbanized world.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Rapid urbanization and the algorithmically mediated digital environment have been linked to a "digital pandemic" in youth mental health. As Generation Z transitions from play-based to phone-based childhoods, understanding how digital architecture interacts with urban stressors is critical. This review delineates the socio-neurobiological mechanisms underlying this crisis and proposes a comprehensive multi-tiered public health framework for technology-led intervention. RECENT FINDINGS: Emerging evidence suggests that attention-optimizing algorithms exploit neurodevelopmental

Role of interconnected resources in chronic pain among people of color: a psychological network analysis approach.

Chronic pain among people of color is influenced by biological, structural, and social forces. While network models have been applied to chronic pain symptoms, research on resource disparities often isolates factors such as income, failing to account for how these systemic resources interact as a dynamic system. Integrating Conservation of Resources theory with psychological network analysis, this study examined how interconnected patterns of resource loss and gain shape chronic pain experiences among a sample of 622 adults identifying as Black, Asian, or Latinx with chronic pain. Network mode
