Rectal suction biopsy (RSB) is the gold standard diagnostic procedure for disorders of bowel motility. This study describes our experience with RSB stained with histochemistry as the first diagnostic approach in a large series of patients presenting with chronic constipation. Pleomorphic liposarcoma is an uncommon form of liposarcoma that only recently has been properly characterized. A series of 57 cases is presented. Patient age at presentation ranged from 27 to 95 years (median, 54 years), and there was a slight male predilection (male/female ratio = 1.2:1). Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy for breast cancer staging has been widely accepted because it is more sensitive and less morbid than axillary dissection. Sentinel nodes can be thoroughly scrutinized using a variety of techniques increasing the detection of micrometastases; however, the clinical relevance of micrometastases has been challenged. The available data suggest that the prognostic significance of axillary metastases is related to the size of the metastases, and the best data suggest that outcome for patients with metastases < 0.2 mm is similar to patients with node-negative disease.

A rapid counting protocol is described which combines the optical disector and Cavalieri methods on non-embedded slices of fixed tissue viewed in the confocal laser scanning microscope.
