Paradoxical and less paradoxical effects of thought suppression: a critical review.

The process of consciously trying to avoid certain thoughts is referred to as thought suppression. Experimental research has documented that thought suppression may have paradoxical effects in that it leads to an increased frequency of the to-be-suppressed thought intruding consciousness. It has also been claimed that suppression has disruptive effects on episodic memory (i.e., a less paradoxical effect). The present article critically evaluates studies on the paradoxical and less paradoxical effects of thought suppression. More specifically, the issue of whether thought suppression plays a ca

Psychiatric disorders in women with bulimia nervosa and their first-degree relatives: effects of comorbid substance dependence.

OBJECTIVE: Women with bulimia nervosa (BN) and comorbid substance dependence often display impulsive behaviors. We assessed Axis I and II psychiatric diagnoses in their first-degree relatives in order to understand the etiological factors that may contribute to this subtype of BN. METHOD: We used contemporary family-epidemiological methodology to compare the lifetime prevalence of psychiatric disorders among 47 women with BN and 44 non-eating-disordered community control women, and their first-degree relatives (177 and 190, respectively). BN probands were stratified by the presence (n = 20) o

The prevalence of mental health disorders among young adults who use amphetamine-type stimulants, compared to young adults who do not.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: There is a lack of evidence regarding mental health disorder prevalence in people who use amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS). This study compares prevalence in Australian young adults who used ATS and young adults who had never used, and examines potential predictors. DESIGN AND METHODS: Population-based sampling was used to recruit young adults who used ATS (n = 224) and young adults who had never used ATS (n = 125). Thirty-day prevalence of major depressive disorder (MDD), generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder (PD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) an

Social anxiety disorder: comorbidity and its implications.

Social anxiety disorder is an extremely common and potentially disabling psychiatric disorder. Generalized social anxiety disorder, a subtype of the disorder, is believed to be the most common and most severe form. It is also the form that is most often associated with other psychiatric disorders. Unless the clinician has a high index of suspicion, social anxiety disorder may remain undetected. The clinical and treatment implications of the most common psychiatric comorbidities associated with social anxiety disorder are discussed in this article, with a focus on major depression, panic disord

Validity of criteria for DSM-III self-defeating personality disorder.

Criteria for self-defeating personality disorder were examined using a standard measure in 148 psychiatric outpatients. The best individual criterion was self-defeating B (taken advantage of by others). Self-defeating A (sacrifices needs for others) and K (being hurt is sexually arousing) were of little value. Although some dependent, histronic, and avoidant criteria were also related to self-defeating personality disorder, the disorders appeared fairly clearly separate. There did appear to be more overlap (although not identity) with borderline personality disorder. It appears possible that i

Maternal buprenorphine treatment and infant outcome.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Maternal buprenorphine maintenance predisposes the infant to exhibit neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), but there is insufficient published information regarding the nature of NAS and factors that contribute to its severity in buprenorphine-exposed infants. METHODS: The present study evaluated forty-one infants of buprenorphine-maintained women in comprehensive substance use disorder treatment who participated in an open-label study examining the effects of maternal buprenorphine maintenance on infant outcomes. Modifiers of the infant outcomes, including maternal t

Mental Health Symptoms and Parenting Among Father-Only and Dual Substance Use Disorder Couples.

In the present study, we examined associations between fathers' and mothers' mental health symptoms as related to their own and their partner's parenting in couples in which fathers (n = 38 families) or both partners (n = 30 families) had substance use disorder (SUD). Each partner reported on symptoms of depression, anxiety, and hostility; children reported on each parent's parenting behaviors, including acceptance, psychological control, and knowledge of children. Actor-partner interdependence models indicated that when substance-abusing fathers have more symptoms of anxiety and depression, n

A gendered analysis of Canadian Aboriginal individuals admitted to inpatient substance abuse detoxification: a three-year medical chart review.

This study examined gender differences within a sample of Canadian Aboriginal individuals admitted to an inpatient, hospital-based substance abuse detoxification program. Even though alcohol was the most frequent primary drug of detoxification for both genders, women received proportionately higher rates of cocaine or opiate detoxification diagnoses. In addition to a younger age, females reported higher rates of physical and sexual abuse. Women were also administered antidepressants, antibiotic medication protocols, and more medical evaluation tests. It appears that Canadian Aboriginal women h

Pathological gambling and substance misuse.

This paper first discusses the ways in which pathological gambling (a disorder of impulse control) and substance misuse are similar. It then examines research focusing on substance misuse among pathological gambles, and research on pathological gambling among substance misusers, focusing on a study examining gambling among 462 methadone patients from New York City. That study found that 21% of the sample were probable pathological gamblers, while an additional 9% were problem gamblers, i.e., they had some problem related to their gambling. The treatment implications of these findings and futur

The natural history of lifetime psychiatric disorders in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder followed over half a century.

OBJECTIVE: Few long-term studies have examined the life-time prevalence of comorbid psychiatric conditions in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). We therefore studied the frequency of comorbid psychiatric disorders, and their relation to onset and prognosis, in patients with OCD who were followed for almost half a century. METHODS: During 1947-1953, 285 OCD patients were admitted as inpatients to a university hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden. Among those, 251 (88%) accepted a structured comprehensive psychiatric examination in 1954-1956. In 1989-1993, 176 survivors were eligible

Cannabis Use, Cannabis Use Disorder, and Comorbid Psychiatric Illness: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: The landscape of attitudes, legal status and patterns of use of cannabis is rapidly changing in the United States and elsewhere. Therefore, the primary aim of this narrative review is to provide a concise overview of the literature on the comorbidity of cannabis use and cannabis use disorder (CUD) with other substance use and psychiatric disorders, and to use this information to accurately guide future directions for the field. METHODS: A literature review of PubMed was conducted for studies relating to cannabis use, CUD, and a co-occurring psychiatric disorder. To provide an over

Virtual Reality Therapy in Mental Health.

Initially designed for the treatment of phobias, the use of virtual reality in phobic disorders has expanded to other mental health disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder, substance-related disorders, eating disorders, psychosis, and autism spectrum disorder. The goal of this review is to provide an accessible understanding of why this approach is important for future practice, given its potential to provide clinically relevant information associated with the assessment and treatment of people suffering from mental illness. Most of the evidence is available for the use of virtual real…

Changing Drug Consumption Patterns Among Clients Attending the Medically Supervised Injecting Centre, Sydney: Implications for Service Provision and Harm Reduction Response.

INTRODUCTION: The Uniting Medically Supervised Injecting Centre (MSIC) in Sydney (Australia) provides a supervised space for people to inject pre-obtained drugs. We investigated injecting patterns among clients over time and the impact on overdose risk and client behaviours. METHODS: MSIC holds information on visit-specific drug injected, overdose, and sanctions for disruptive behaviour. Data for May 2001 to December 2024 were analysed. Where amphetamines or opioids were injected, the study record was marked accordingly. Data were aggregated to an annual visit summary and drug categorised int

Features of drug addiction treatment programs in Atlantic Canada that help (or not) with access and retention: A qualitative study.

Access to government-funded addiction treatment programs can reduce harms experienced by people who use substances (PWUS). There is some research on what features (e.g., policies and practices) of treatment programs help or do not help with access; however, not much is known about program directors' and physicians' perspectives of these features in Atlantic Canada. One-on-one semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with program directors and physicians working in government-funded addiction treatment programs in Atlantic Canada in 2021. Interview questions focused on perspectives

Network analysis of caffeine use disorder, withdrawal symptoms, and psychiatric symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Caffeine Use Disorder (CUD) is not currently recognized as a formal diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5). However, recent studies within the DSM-5 context have explored this issue. Also, this disorder is closely associated with caffeine withdrawal symptoms, which are formally recognized as a diagnosis in the DSM-5. Additionally, there is limited evidence regarding the connection between caffeine-related issues and psychiatric symptoms. The main aim of the present study was to determine the network structure of CUD and caffeine

Predictors of treatment attrition among individuals in substance use disorder treatment: A machine learning approach.

BACKGROUND: Early treatment discontinuation in substance use disorder treatment settings is common and often difficult to predict. We leveraged a machine learning approach (i.e., random forest) to identify individuals at risk for treatment attrition, and specific factors associated with treatment discontinuation. METHOD: Participants (N = 29,809) were individuals ≥ 18 years who attended substance use disorder treatment facilities in the United States. Using random forest, we aimed to predict three outcomes (1) leaving against medical advice (AMA), (2) discharging involuntarily, and (3) discha
