Memory traces of duration and location in the right intraparietal sulcus.

Time and space form an integral part of every human experience, and for the neuronal representation of these perceptual dimensions, previous studies point to the involvement of the right-hemispheric intraparietal sulcus and structures in the medial temporal lobe. Here we used multi-voxel pattern analysis (MVPA) to investigate long-term memory traces for temporal and spatial stimulus features in those areas. Participants were trained on four images associated with short versus long durations and with left versus right locations. Our results demonstrate stable representations of both temporal an…

Proteomic and Phosphoproteomic Characteristics of Multiple Brain Regions in Rhesus Macaques After SARS-CoV-2 Infection.

The SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant is more contagious than the original Alpha variant and can still cause neurological symptoms, including cognitive impairment. To gain a deeper understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying these neurological effects, this study was conducted. Proteomic and phosphoproteomic analyses were carried out utilizing LC-MS/MS. Samples included brainstem, cerebellum, frontal lobe, occipital lobe, parietal lobe, and temporal lobe from SARS-CoV-2 Omicron-infected and noninfected control rhesus macaques. Infection with Omicron resulted in inflammatory responses across …

Space-CNN: a decision classification method based on EEG signals from different brain regions.

Decision-making plays a critical role in an individual's interpersonal interactions and cognitive processes. Due to the issue of strong subj … ce of different brain regions on decision-making is parietal lobe > frontal lobe > occipital lobe > temporal lobe. In addition, the average accuracy of space-CNN reaches 86.13%, which is about 6% higher than similar studies.

Recognition of Emotion by Brain Connectivity and Eye Movement.

Simultaneous activation of brain regions (i.e., brain connection features) is an essential mechanism of brain activity in emotion recognitio … ence and arousal). We found that the connectivity eigenvalues of the long-distance prefrontal lobe, temporal lobe, parietal lobe, and center are related to cognitive activity involving high valance. In addition, saccade movement was correlated with long-distance occipital-frontal connectivity. Finally, short-distance connectivity results showed emotional fluctu …

Frontal lobe epileptic seizures are accompanied by elevated pitch during verbal communication.

The objective of our study was to assess alterations in speech as a possible localizing sign in frontal lobe epilepsy. Ictal speech was analyzed in 18 patients with frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) during seizures and in the interictal period. Matched identical words were analyzed regarding alterations in fundamental frequency (ƒo) as an approximation of pitch. In patients with FLE, ƒo of ictal utterances was significantly higher than ƒo in interictal recordings (p = 0.016). Ictal ƒo increases occurred in both FLE of right and left seizure origin. In contrast, a matched temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE)…

Metabolic changes in occipital lobe epilepsy with automatisms.

PURPOSE: Some studies suggest that the pattern of glucose hypometabolism relates not only to the ictal-onset zone but also reflects seizure … matisms, glucose hypometabolism extended from the epileptogenic occipital lobe into the ipsilateral temporal lobe. SIGNIFICANCE: We identified a distinctive hypometabolic pattern that was specific for OLE patients with automatisms during a seizure. This finding supports the postulate that seizure propagation is a cause of glucose hypometabolism beyond the regi …

[Compartment analysis of 123I-iomazenil brain SPECT in patients with moyamoya disease].

We investigated 11 patients with moyamoya disease about 123I-Iomazenil kinetics in the brain using three-compartment, two-parameter model. The transition rate constant (K1) from the blood to the brain and the binding potential (BP) of the benzodiazepine to the receptors were calculated for every ROI (right and left side of cerebellum, frontal lobe, parietal lobe, occipital lobe and temporal lobe; 10 ROIs a case). The K1 value correlated with BP value significantly, but not so closely (r = 0.639). And there is no significant difference in BP value among low-K1 group (mean (of K1) -S.D. < or = K…

Mesial temporal, diencephalic, and striatal contributions to deficits in single word reading, word priming, and recognition memory.

Fifty-three volunteer participants were studied with the fade-in task (Ostergaard, 1998) to measure naming latency, word priming, and recognition-memory performance. and with morphometric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques to measure volumes of mesial temporal lobe, diencephalic, striatal, and neocortical structures. The relationship between measures of cerebral volume loss and performance deficits was modeled using simultaneous regression analyses in which the behavioral measures were dependent variables. The results suggested that damage in both hippocampal and amygdala/entorhinal a…

Posterior callosal infarction. Clinicopathological correlations.

Clinicoanatomical observations on a patient with partial interhemispheric disconnection associated with complete ischaemic destruction of the splenium and of the posterior part of the body of the corpus callosum are presented. Neuropathological examination of the areas containing degenerated white matter indicated that the lesions affected the transcallosal fibres that link the cortex of the occipital lobes and the superior parietal lobules (SPL). The white matter situated in the temporal lobes was intact. This suggests that in man, and contrary to what has been described in the monkey, the ca…

Representing Visual Objects, Attention, and Load in Human Occipito-temporal and Posterior Parietal Cortices.

Stability and adaptability are two essential components of everyday vision, enabling us to maintain an object's identity as we attend to different features under varying task loads. We hypothesize that these two components of vision are supported by the interactions among object, attention, and load representations, and the interplay between the human occipito-temporal cortex (OTC), given its visual representation invariance, and the posterior parietal cortex (PPC), an adaptive visual processing center. To test this, human participants performed four tasks on the same stream of colored objects

A TMS Investigation on the Role of Lateral Occipital Complex and Caudal Intraparietal Sulcus in the Perception of Object Form and Orientation.

We used TMS to assess the causal roles of the lateral occipital (LO) and caudal intraparietal sulcus (cIPS) areas in the perceptual discrimination of object features. All participants underwent fMRI to localize these areas using a protocol in which they passively viewed images of objects that varied in both form and orientation. fMRI identified six significant brain regions: LO, cIPS, and the fusiform gyrus, bilaterally. In a separate experimental session, we applied TMS to LO or cIPS while the same participants performed match-to-sample form or orientation discrimination tasks. Compared with

Fronto-temporo-occipital activity changes with age during a visual working memory developmental study in children, adolescents and adults.

The present report analyzes differences in cerebral sources among several age groups with respect to the encoding, maintenance and recognition of stimuli during a visual working memory task. Differential intensity of involvement of anterior and posterior areas during working memory processing is expected at different ages. For that, 168 subjects between 6 and 26 years old performed a visual delayed match-to-sample task. The sample was subdivided into 5 age groups, and the cerebral sources were analyzed with sLORETA, comparing the groups two-by-two. The results showed that at younger ages more

31P NMR spectroscopy of phospholipid metabolites in postmortem schizophrenic brain.

Evidence has been accumulating that schizophrenia involves abnormalities in the composition and metabolism of cell membrane phospholipids (PLs) in the brain. In vivo 31P MRS has been used to measure the metabolic precursors and degradation products of PL metabolism in schizophrenia. Because in vivo line widths are substantially broader than in solution, only the broad phosphomonoester (PME) and phosphodiester bands, or partly resolved resonances of individual metabolites, are typically measured in vivo in the 31P spectrum. In addition to poor resolution, the relatively low signal-to-noise rati

Localization of human cortical areas activated on perception of ordered and chaotic images.

The aims of this study were to identify the locations of areas in the human cortex responsible for describing fragmented test images of different degrees of ordering and to identify the areas taking decisions regarding stimuli of this type. The locations of higher visual functions were determined by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) using a scanner fitted with a superconducting magnet and a field strength of 1.5 T. The blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) method was based on measurements of the level of hemoglobin oxygenation in the blood supplied to the brain. This level was taken t

Selective activation of human cortical area V5A by a rotating visual stimulus in fMRI; implication of attentional mechanisms.

The human homologue of area V5A of rotation-selective cells in the monkey medial superior temporal area (MST) was identified using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). It was located within the border region of occipito-temporo-parietal cortex, in four of 10 subjects on both sides, and on the right or left side in three subjects each. The stimulus was a black-and-white sine-modulated windmill presented either stationary or in rotation phases of 1 s duration. Areas V1-V3 did not show up with this paradigm. Focusing attention by mentally counting the number of rotation phases ensured hi
