Incontinentia pigmenti is a rare genodermatosis in which the skin involvement occurs in all patients. Additionally, other ectodermal tissues may be affected, such as the central nervous system, eyes, hair, nails and teeth. The disease has a X-linked dominant inheritance pattern and is usually lethal to male fetuses. The dermatological findings occur in four successive phases, following the lines of Blaschko: First phase - vesicles on an erythematous base; second phase - verrucous hyperkeratotic lesions; third phase - hyperchromic spots and fourth phase - hypochromic atrophic lesions.

A 14-year-old girl developed dental pain and was treated for acute infected pulpitis of her right upper lateral incisor with drilling and filling. The pain continued and was helped by analgesia, sucking ice cubes and drinking cold water. Forty-eight hours later, she became confused and disoriented. She started to vomit and complained of headache. Investigations revealed hyponatraemia with normal serum potassium levels and initially normal urinary sodium excretion. Over the next 24 hours, she passed 5.45 L of urine and her serum sodium rose from 125 to 143 mmol/L. Self-induced water intoxicatio

OBJECTIVE: To systemically search the literature for case reports concerning adverse effects associated with oral and peri-oral piercings on oral health and/or general health.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: MEDLINE and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) were searched up through 1 April 2010 to identify appropriate studies.
RESULTS: Independent screening of the titles and abstracts identified 1169 papers from MEDLINE and 73 papers from CENTRAL. Subsequently, 67 papers describing 83 cases were processed for data extraction. The case reports described complications in oral and

We report the first case of Osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis (OOKP) who successfully underwent surgery in Malaysia following a grade 4 (severe) chemical injury in both eyes in 2006. The patient's left eye was eviscerated and his right eye underwent penetrating keratoplasty. However, the corneal graft failed and became opaque. His right eye could only perceive light. The OOKP was offered to him hoping to recover some functional vision. He underwent a 2-stage surgery to implant the OOKP into his right eye. However, 2 months post-operation, he developed vitreous haemorrhage. A successful pars plana

Eosinophilic granuloma is the most common expression of Langerhans cell histiocytosis and corresponds with typical bone lesions. This disease is of importance to dental professionals because early clinical signs can occur in the jaw and can cause extensive destruction of the periodontal tissues. Pathological fracture is an unusual finding. The purpose of this case report is to describe a case of eosinophilic granuloma in a 28-year-old black man who initially appeared with intense pain from a pathological mandibular fracture.

PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to evaluate the dependence of gingival recession, malocclusion and factors that may lead to recessions of the gingiva in patients applying for orthodontical treatment.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study involved 52 randomly selected patients treated with fixed appliances due to occlusal irregularities and dental abnormalities. Data obtained from the examination and selected parameters from cephalometric analysis were placed in a chart including ANB skeletal class and Wits parameter, lower incisor position IMPA, dental abnormalities, extractions due to orthodonti

BACKGROUND: Glenohumeral osteoarthritis may be associated with severe posterior glenoid bone loss and glenoid retroversion. Treatment with total shoulder arthroplasty and autologous bone graft obtained from the humeral head has been infrequently reported in the peer-reviewed literature.
METHODS: The clinical and radiographic results of primary total shoulder replacement with an all-polyethylene glenoid component and autologous humeral head graft augmentation performed by a single surgeon in thirteen consecutive patients were evaluated.
RESULTS: Twelve of the thirteen patients were followed f

The mucosal calcified nodule is a rare oral lesion that has a predilection for the young child. This case report describes an infant with a persistent and tender gingival swelling associated with an unerupted, maxillary central incisor. Besides a differential diagnosis for this entity, the causes of abnormal calcium deposits within the skin of children are discussed.

OBJECTIVE: To determine patterns of alveolar bone loss (periodontitis) and other lesions evident on full-mouth survey radiographs of cats.
DESIGN: Retrospective study.
ANIMALS: 147 cats.
PROCEDURE: Full-mouth radiographs were evaluated for evidence and severity of alveolar bone loss, odontoclastic resorption lesions (ORL), retained roots, missing teeth, signs of endodontic disease secondary to periodontitis, and apical resorption.
RESULTS: 106 (72%) cats had some degree of periodontitis, 100 (68%) were missing teeth, 98 (67%) had ORL, 78 (53%) had expansion of the buccal alveolar bone at 1

Whole tooth extraction is generally considered to be the treatment of choice for teeth with advanced feline external odontoclastic resorptive lesions. These teeth often have both a weakened, brittle crown and radicular ankylosis. These two factors cause frustration and sometimes complications during attempts at extraction. This study investigated the alternative of intentionally leaving part or all of non-pathologic tooth roots in situ to prevent iatrogenic trauma to the patient, loss of alveolar bone, and prolonged healing of surgical defects. Fifty one roots from 23 teeth were radiographed 5

Lesch-Nyhan syndrome is a rare anomaly consisting of a deficiency in the production of hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferase that leads to the overproduction of purine and the accumulation of uric acid. Major manifestations include mental retardation and self-destructive behavior resulting in self-mutilation through biting and scratching. Because no medical treatment exists to alleviate the symptoms of self-mutilation, direct dental intervention is the only way these behaviors can be affected. A unique case of this type involving two male identical twins is reported.

Tooth-related abscesses in small captive ruminants are most likely foreign body-induced periodontic-endodontic lesions. The instigating cause may be abnormal texture of dietary material. Bacteria, though probably not the initiating cause, significantly contribute to pathology and morbidity. Extraction of severely affected teeth is an effective although sometimes challenging mode of treatment. Periodically complications may arise, which vary in difficulty of treatment. Prevention may be the alteration of the major forage component of the diet to textures that are less coarse and stemmy, and the

Osteopathia striata is an unusual skeletal condition that can affect the bones of the skull quite markedly and result in dental problems that have rarely been discussed in the literature. The characteristic features exhibited by the patient in this case report were dense maxillary and mandibular bone, a high forehead with frontal bossing, a broad nasal bridge, prominent zygomatic arches and thickened angles of the mandible. The mouth opening was limited as a result of sclerosis of the mastoid process, and right lateral excursion of the mandible was reduced, probably because of a deformity of t

A case of hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN) type I with optic atrophy, neural deafness and pyramidal tract signs was described. The patient was a 53-year-old man who had suffered from difficulty in walking, decreased visual acuity since age 16 years. These symptoms were slowly progressive. At the age of 37, he was pointed out optic atrophy, positive pyramidal tract signs. Distal muscle weakness with atrophy of four limbs was prominent at the age of 50. Since then, he noticed progressive hearing loss with blindness. His elder sister was diagnosed Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. On neu
